I really enjoyed this book. Every concept is thoroughly explained, and the comparisons with other programs and platforms are really helpful. I don’t think there’s a better resource to learn R for data analytics (I’ve definitely looked and have been disappointed many, many times), so I can absolutely recommend this book.

It was exactly what I was looking for: a pedagogical read guiding me towards the next step with R. I'm an intermediate-level R user (not my first programming language), working mainly with relational databases and non-big data volumes. This book gave me a clear view of what is possible with R once the data become larger, analysis is moved to the cloud and a big-data environment (Hadoop & co) comes into play.

This is an excellent book. It is so from the purely technical point of view but it is also full of interesting facts and historical notes that make it entertaining as well. Well written and pedagogical, I definitely recommend it for anyone also looking for the R- Big Data connection.

Big data analysis has been a trend in Korea too! This book solved my curiosity of big data analysis and the practice with R.

The book starts with the good explanations of the concepts of big data, important terminologies and tools like Hadoop, MapReduce, SQL, SPARK. Then it reviews the R programing and its essential functions for data managing such as importing and exporting data, exploratory data analysis, data visualization. It continues with presenting major restrictions of R in dealing with big data and showing how to employ ff, ffbase and bigmemory packages in R to remove these limitations. Next it enters to more advanced topics Hadoop and Haddop Distributed File System (HDFS) and shows how to do data processing in Hadoop using R. It elaborates the creating single-node and multi-node Hadoop cluster with R along with the practical example. The two chapters of book are totally about connectivity of R and Relational Database Management Systems, SQL database and non-relational databases, NoSQL databes. The other chapter deals with Spark and shows how we can use it for a faster big data processing with using SparkR package in R. It also elaborates how to apply the machine learning algorithms on big data by using H2O platform and h2o package in R.In brief the book is suitable for those readers are going to start dealing with big data using R programming. It includes elementary and advanced topics of the subject successfully but it could be more useful if it includes one or two complete practical projects in details.

Great book for anyone wishing to hone their data engineering skills, having the R platform as their basis. Although this book is intended for the intermediate data science professional, some of the concepts it covers are fairly advanced, yet explained in such a way that they seem elementary. Some experience with the Linux OS (particularly the CLI aspect of it) would be very useful as the author goes into the nitty-gritty often, in order to perform low-level operations that enable the data engineering tasks he describes. He also provides a plethora of meticulously illustrated examples that make all the concepts he introduces hands-on and comprehensible.R is not my platform of choice (in fact I rarely use it nowadays), but I still enjoyed reading this book at least twice and I would recommend it to anyone who wishes to advance their data science expertise, using this particular platform. This is not a book you would read on your commute though. For best results I would recommend you treat it like a textbook and follow all of the examples on your computer.Disclaimer: I have been given a copy of this book for free in order to provide the Amazon community with an unbiased review of it. So, even though I'm not a verified purchaser, trust me when I say it, I know this book inside-out!

Amazon.com Review

In the first major book on AIDS, San Francisco Chronicle reporter Randy Shilts examines the making of an epidemic. Shilts researched and reported the book exhaustively, chronicling almost day-by-day the first five years of AIDS. His work is critical of the medical and scientific communities' initial response and particularly harsh on the Reagan Administration, who he claims cut funding, ignored calls for action and deliberately misled Congress. Shilts doesn't stop there, wondering why more people in the gay community, the mass media and the country at large didn't stand up in anger more quickly. The AIDS pandemic is one of the most striking developments of the late 20th century and this is the definitive story of its beginnings.

From Publishers Weekly

An exhaustive account of the early years of the AIDS crisis, this outlines the medical, social and political forces behind the epidemic's origin and rapid spread with a clarity and narrative drive that should appeal to an audience far broader than previous books on the topic. San Francisco Chronicle reporter Shilts successfully weaves comprehensive investigative reporting and commercial page-turner pacing, political intrigue and personal tragedy into a landmark work. Its importance cannot be overstated: few topics merit more attention from the general public, or, as Shilts's account makes appallingly clear, have been as successfully and deliberately shielded from the public at such a high cost of human lives. What starts as a medical mystery and the moving chronicle of a relentless killer soon evolves into an expose of deception and ineptitude at the highest levels of government. The tragedies of AIDS are many, and they continue to multiply, and Shilts conveys the hideous suffering and the heartbreak of so many senseless deaths. But his detailed examination of the health establishment, the government and the press reveals the emergence of a more treacherous menace in the initial failure of our guardian institutions to respond to the crisis, despite the heroic efforts of a handful of individuals in hard-hit New York and San Francisco and at the Centers for Disease Control. Shilts presents one alarming story after another without letting his own passionsevident in the sheer enormity of the projectcompromise the excellent reportage. The reader rises to fury at the apathy, silence and deception that have characterized the official response. Shilts concludes with Rock Hudson's public affliction in 1985, a watershed in the nation's awareness of the crisis. And the Band Played On could prove to be an equally important milestone, freeing vital funding and generating an even greater outpouring of sympathy and outrage. The book stands as a definitive reminder of the shameful injustice inflicted on this nation by the institutions in which we put our trust. 50,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo; author tour. Randy Shilts kind of points the finger at everyone, including the Gay community that he was a part of, and I feel that is what really made the book as great as it is.He didn't overlook the blame here and there to focus on one or two agents. He let it all out and because of that we got to see the many little things that all came together to give us the AIDS Epidemic. It's seems to be worth more because of that. It's not heavy handed. Instead he sets out all the pieces and lets us view it as a whole, without supplementing the blame to only the popular places and institutions. It's the best thing to read if you want all the social and governmental and medical reasons of this plague.

I read this originally right after it was first published, and regretfully gave away my copy. This 20th Anniversary publication, in paperback, is of course easier to hold, but I really missed the photos from the original. It is THE book to read about the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, and reading it again was especially poignant knowing the the author had subsequently joined the ranks of whom he had written so eloquently.

In Randy Shilts's 'And The Band Played On', the author successfully documents a moment in time that represents a major shift in the world. The AIDS epidemic has killed millions, but the fight against death mobilized the gay voice and can be seen as having led to the modern political rights we now have because it forced us out of the shadows and into living rooms.Drawing upon a wealth of sources Shilts' social history of the AIDS epidemic is a moving piece that uses oral history to illuminate a world not ready for the AIDS epidemic. Whether this was because of homophobia or prudishness or other social forces is unclear and up to the reader to decide. But it was not until the death of the manly and supposedly straight Rock Hudson that there was a a true paradigm shift in treatment of the AIDS epidemic. Until then responses to the epidemic were woeful.Beginning in the late 1970s in Africa and continuing to the late 1980s in the US, this particular history needs to be known. The cast of characters is large. And the death tool is almost as large. This is what makes this tragic history especially poignant and remarkable. As a gay man, I am always aware of AIDS and precautions against it. But this story starts in a period before AIDS was known. In this idyllic post-Stonewall period, sex was freedom for many. Having been born in 1980, I avoided the worst of the plague, but having recently seen The Normal Heart on HBO, I wanted to learn more. And this book succeeds in educating a reader about what can happen when ignorance and politics trump science. Now that we are entering the Truvada period, I think it especially important to understand what can happen again. Will it? Who knows but antibiotic resistant gonorrhea is out there. Who knows what other plagues lurk. Waiting.

This is nothing less than a compulsively readable tour-de-force in modern medical journalism. It's the history of a disease, a people, and an era all in one.I always knew I'd read this book eventually, but as with any long non-fiction tome there comes a risk that at some point your attention span might have to bow out. Not here: this book holds your interest on nearly every page (I skipped one or two of the more dense courtroom testimony pages, but often later went back to read them anyway). Randy Shilts does not ask for your time lightly - every chapter here is earned. It seems almost an omniscient narrative voice in involved, and with over 900 interviews and his own previous years of investigative work on AIDS, there's a reason for that. Before reading, I had foolishly assumed the word politics had been added to the title to sex it up a bit. Nope. The story of the various responses people, communities, and entire governments had to AIDS was all about politics. So often reading this book did I get the impression you could actually hear the bullet whiz past your ear. If you were born around or before 1980 in a first world country and ever had a blood transplant, this could have been your story too. While Mr. Shilts avoids sensationalism, the story is sensational enough in its barest facts for that point to be clear.I immediately looked up the author to learn more about what he had written only to discover he too died from AIDS in the 1990's. His book, already a tribute to a lost generation, is now an example of all the substantive contributions those men and women could've made if politics could have been shoved aside sooner. This book is a rare thing: it is both a great, historic work and a damn good read. Would that Randy Shilts had lived long enough to give us many more of its calibre.

It is wonderful that Penguin published excerpts from the Rig Veda for Anglophones but this edition needs a thorough update. While the Rig Veda is one of the most difficult of the world’s great religious texts to understand, the introduction does nothing to explain anything about the origin, authors or cultural world of these texts. And, while the inner textual apparatus is helpful this does not diminish the need for a thorough scholarly introduction to ground the reader. Without such a guide, I can only recommend the Wikipedia article as a partial substitute.Furthermore, the selection of texts is highly biased towards the later parts of the Rig Veda. I can understand selecting parts perceived as more relevant for Western readers, but I believe more than 90% of the Penguin edition is from books one or ten. Surely, there are hymns of interest in books two through nine that could have been included to provide a more representative sample.I gave the book three stars not because the Rig Veda is not worth reading, but because Penguin could put together a much better volume than this. It has been almost forty years since this edition was published. I can’t believe there are not interested Sanskrit scholars who Penguin could commission to provide an update. Text=beautiful Edition=disappointing.

I am reading this now. I have looked at several other larger versions. These are accessible translations with excellent notes. Probably the best selection out of a much larger book that is likely to be available. Clearly the result of many years introducing this important work to American students. It should be your first choice.note: Potential readers should be aware that Wendy Doniger and all her work is being aggressively trolled by Hindu Nationalists on many message boards like this with calls of "Lock her up" being directed towards anyone who might have critical things to say about India. Probably should not take a copy of anything with her name on it to India during election season.

Doniger does as very accessible translation. Her translation choices preserve the meaning while allowing a flow to the language. I have a number of copies of the Rig Veda. I like Doniger's hymn selection in this version. The Rig Veda gives a unique insight into an ancient civilization and its practices.

I liked everything about the book! Wendy Doniger is sublime in her works. I follow her writings for many years now! Truly excellent! Paul van der Velde, the Netherlands

This text is:(1) An accurate translation of the Vedas as far as we know.(2) A product of Orientalism.(3) Relatively unpolluted by ideology (as far as the translation itself goes). This text is not:(1) A guide to how the Vedas were used in classical India.(2) An accurate commentary on how Hindus view the Vedas.(3) Complete.(4) A representative summary of the Vedas, although it does have the few very famous Vedas which Hindus would memorize even today. It's not a bad edition and I award it 5 stars. Ignore the commentary.

I should have read closer, it is only 108 of the 1,028 hymns in the Rig Veda. Disappointed.

Excellent book and excellent seller

Great product, good communication.
