It’s been two years since the recovery of The Amulet of Samarkand, and Nathaniel (now known as John Mandrake) is a Government official in the Office of Internal Affairs, apprenticed to Jessica Whitwell. His job is to hunt down a pack of rebellious commoners known as the Resistance, who have been causing a series of disturbances in London, aiming to destabilize the rule of the magicians. He suspects the involvement of a girl named Kitty and her friends whom we met in his previous adventure, and although correct in this assumption, it soon becomes obvious that there is deeper evil afoot, as a destructive force hidden in a black cloud begins attacking the city, destroying buildings and magical artifacts as it goes. When things start spiraling out of control, he is forced to call upon Bartimaeus again for help, and the adventure spirals into a saga of grave robbery, political maneuvers, foreign travel and ancient magic.Though certainly not as good as the first, and a little too long, The Golem’s Eye makes for good reading, but is sadly lacking the sarcastic witticisms of everyone’s favorite djinn that were the high point of book one.Amanda Richards, May 20, 2006

I really love these books. I think they are best for quite young people, but I certainly do not fall within that category and I enjoy them immensely. The setting is not so highly wrought as the Harry Potter books but they do not suffer from the same borrowing problem as the Potter books. More importantly I feel that the Bartimaeus books don't contain the tiny pill of meanness that the Potter books have. Sure there are plenty of mean people and cruel actions in the Bartimaeus books but there isn't the same quality of feeling about it. I think these books are redeemed by the authors essential humor and light deftness which the Potter books lack.

A continuation of the excellent "Amulet of Samarkand." If you are looking for a fun, easy young adult fantasy this is for you. It's more serious than Harry Potter, but only slightly more so. There's lots of intrigue, magic (of a demonic kind), but it's appropriate for all ages. The writing is high caliber. This is certainly worth a read, you'll likely find it's worth rating at least 3 stars yourself.

Nowhere near as good as Book 1. Book 1 was fantastic. Book 2 was mediocre. Book 3 was the worst, being far too political. Book 1 was fun. Get book 1 and stop there.

...& will be quickly buying the others in the series. There's a nice, subtle commentary on the ebb & flow of history in this book, all wrapped up in entertaining magic & skullduggery. The ambiance of the book suggests both past & present, & I delighted in the passive resistance of the djinni Bartamaeus. This is better than the first book in the series, & I'm looking forward to the next books.

I continue to enjoy the writing style and plot....can't wait for the next one ! I hope it lives up to my expectations.

I read the first book several years ago, but it wasn't until I recently purchased this book that I became "hooked" on this series. Some say there is not enough of Bartimaeus in this book, true he has fewer passages, but the quality of these passages make up for the lack of quantity. In this book you get the first person account of a non-magician on life in England, and what an eye-opener it is. It also brought up the idea that what separates the non-magical people from the "magicians" is not ability but opportunity and education. Unlike Harry Potter's magicians the magicians in this series possess no magical ability, only the knowledge of how to control demons (a very interesting concept). In this book you see for the first time that life is NOT rosy in this world, it's definately a dog-eat-dog world. Jonathan Stroud makes these characters three dimensional and in doing so helps you feel like you know them and want all of them to live happily-ever-after.I found this series to stride beyond the usual boundaries of fantasy fiction in that the "heroes" were at times almost as evil as the "villians" (but its that true of real life??). If your not afraid to look at characters such as these in the eye and join them in their journey, then this is a book for your library.

Johnathan Stroud is a fantastic author. He has a really sharp wit and a great sense of humor. Highly recommend.

It led to a lot of great discussions on our last road trip. If you're a Fresh Air fan, this is a must-have!

I've never listened to Terry Gross's show, so this was my introduction to her. I felt she did a fine job in the interviews, many of which are edited to be very brief and most likely focused on the most interesting responses from the guests. What I didn't like is that I don't think the individual interviews work well when compared to each other in this "collection" format. I say this because I found myself expecting interviews to support both sides of an issue, but was generally disappointed here. There are a handful of interviews discussing a person's gradual distancing from their faith, but there are no interviews that discuss the opposite.I think that the big problem here is that Gross interviews people who are radical in some sense (extreme conservative, gay priests, people who have left their faith, academic muslims speaking against radical islam), which makes for a good individual interview and good books (most of the guests were authors). However, the chance to get a broader sense of societies beliefs is missed here, especially when the moderate judeo-christian demographic is not represented by these interviews. If your a Terry Gross fan and listen to her show, you'll be fine with this collection. If you hoped that this collected would be collated in a way to provide soemthing more insightful, you will be disappointed.

As any fan of NPR knows, Terry Gross is a top-notch interviewer who never fails to impress in her interviews. This collection is no exception. Her ability to ask thoughtful and challenging questions to scores of guests with such widely different viewpoints on religion truly demonstrates her incredible range, objectivity, and confidence.I found the subject material more engaging than one might initially think. Though religion as each of us practices it might seem like a mundane topic of conversation, opening your mind to extremely different perspectives makes an otherwise mundane topic truly thought provoking. In over 3 hours of interviews, there were probably only 2-3 guests I found somewhat boring. The others had me hanging on their words as I was driving back and forth to work listening to the CD's.Before I listened to these CD's, I wasn't sure there were others who shared my precise views on religion. Now, I am convinced of it, which feels good. Further, I have new and interesting perspectives on religion that I had never previously considered. I particularly enjoyed the interview with Michael Wex, the author of "Born to Kvetch: Yiddish Language and Culture in All of Its Moods." I found that interview not only insightful, but also extremely funny. I don't think I will ever call somebody a "putz" again without thinking of that interview.I would highly recommend this collection of CD's to anybody interested in new perspectives on religion. I would also recommend it to anybody who just enjoys listening to interviews on more cerebral topics than you will find on late night TV.

I honestly do not listen to NPR all that often. Maybe every once and a while I grab something interesting on and it catches me. I have however listened to Fresh Air at times as it has been played during some zen talks I have attended. So when this was offered I grabbed it up to listen to the other religions offered. This is quite a comprehensive collection of interviews that Terry Gross does on 3 CD's. Roughly 3.5 hours total some are longer than others but 5 interviews per CD.I am a Buddhist and was looking forward to hearing from a Buddhist teacher or something along those lines, but none really were in that vein. Thats ok I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the other viewpoints. The interviews were very informative and gave me several hours of entertainment on my long road trip. Here are some quick bios of the people interviewed:CD 1: 76:151.)(2004) Karen Armstrong - A former Catholic nun, she asserts that "All the great traditions are saying the same thing in much the same way, despite their surface differences."
