Review

“Wayne Coffey has written a wonderful book. It’s about hopes, dreams, basketball, winning, losing, deaf culture. Most of all, it’s about language. The language of the deaf. The language of basketball. The language of the heart. Read it, and you’ll never forget it.” —Bill Reynolds, author of Fall River Dreams“Rare is the sports journalist who hears his subjects, whether they speak or sign, as Wayne Coffey does. In Winning Sounds Like This, he takes us into the extraordinary environment in which Gallaudet’s basketball team competes, and the result is a powerful human story. Coffey makes you wish Gallaudet’s games were on ESPN.” —Harvey Araton, New York Times columnist and author of Alive and Kicking “In Winning Sounds Like This, Wayne Coffey tells the fascinating story of a special group of young women. He makes us root for their success on the court and truly care about what happens to them off of it. This is a unique book about a very unique team.” —Rebecca Lobo, New York Liberty“Wayne Coffey has few peers when it comes to writing about basketball. That his subjects are female and deaf only adds to the beauty of this special book. Winning not only sounds like this, it reads like this.” —Peter Golenbock, author of The Last Lap and Amazin’“You will never forget your season with the Gallaudet Bison. Winning Sounds Like This is ultimately a book about the beauty of sport, about the memories it gives us, the way it lives on in our imagination long after the game is over. You will feel as if you have lived this season. And at the end, you will stand up and cheer.” —Mike Lupica, Daily News (New York)“Winning Sounds Like This is much more than a book about basketball. Coffey shows deep appreciation for deaf culture and its critical role in the lives of so many—especially the players about whom he writes. For deaf and hearing readers alike, this is a book that inspires from start to finish.” — I. King Jordan, president, Gallaudet UniversityFrom the Hardcover edition.

t women’s basketball team has just defeated the number one ranked team in the country, the College of New Jersey. A reporter, not wanting to be insensitive, delicately broaches the obvious question: “How can you play so well despite your hearing impairment?” Nanette Virnig, a forward for Gallaudet, puts him at ease. “We’re not hearing impaired,” she says. “We’re deaf.”Winning Sounds Like This is the remarkable story of the nation’s most unique and inspiring women’s basketball team and its 1999–2000 season. It is the touching chronicle of players who don’t hear buzzers or cheers, a coach who has never used a whistle, and a university that is a mecca for deaf culture throughout the world. Wayne Coffey offers an intimate and unsparing look at the players’ lives on and off the court, their struggles to overcome mistreatment and misconceptions of the hearing world, and their deeply r

I have very little to no interest whatsoever in basketball, but I do have a strong interest in deaf women that go against the odds. Thus, this book was half boring and half intriguing for me. Let's start with the intriguing. I really enjoyed the tidbits of deaf history. I never realized Ponce de Leon played a large role in the mass realization that deaf does not mean dumb. I liked reading about the girls' personal lives, namely Touria. (A few interesting pages are dedicated to this brave woman who is not only a deaf female, but a deaf female in a mostly hearing muslim household.) I was thrilled with the information provided about the first deaf president of the school, King Jordan. I was touched deeply by Ronda's story about her speech being made fun of and her six years of silence due to the embarassment of it. I also enjoyed the few pages that went in depth about the controversial cochlear implants and what the girls have to say about it, "Quit trying to make us like you."I was obviously moved numerous times. So why the low rating? I wanted more of the girls and their lives. The basketball is a HUGE part of the story, I won't deny that, but I don't need play by play details about every game. I will not remember who fouled, who free throwed, nor how many times somebody free throwed 2 pages later. My mind began drifting and I began skipping paragraphs to get back to the girls and their stories. I also felt there was a too much about Kitty, the coach. I simply did not take to her the way I did the team.A decent read. I recommend it for anybody who wants to know more about deaf culture and Gallaudet University.

Women's basketball books occupy a special niche in sportswriting.Writing about a male players, an author might ask, "How did they make it into the big time?"Writing about women, authors are forced to ask, "How did they get here at all?" This question adds a new dimension to the stories of women athletes. Players as young as today's collegians have had to overcome stereotypes. Many played on boys' teams -- or tried to.Gallaudet women have to overcome a double stereotype -- being not only female, but also deaf. There was a time when opposing teams would openly ridicule deaf basketball players. One player was devastated as a high school student when a coach from a Christian academy openly laughed at her speech. She made the team but never forgot the experience. However, the players want to be taken seriously as athletes. They do not want or need pity or condescension. To Coffey's credit, the book focuses on basketball, not deafness. We learn how players and teams compensate for a silent world. They can hear someone dribbling behind them. Referees are briefed: players can't hear the whistle so they may not stop playing immediately. And players on "hearing" teams need ASL translators who understand basketball terms.Yet ultimately the story is about the game: coming together as a team and working to win. Like any sports book, there are stories of triumphs as well as tears. We come to care about the players as they, like all college athletes, balance basketball and books.Perhaps the most difficult story takes place after the book was written. Ronda Jo Miller, an All-American center, cannot reach her goal of playing on a WNBA team. In stories posted on the internet, we can learn that she earned admiration of players and coaches during the tryout camp. She eventually played professionally in Denmark, with a "hearing" team, and has played in Kansas City with an expansion league, the WNBL.What happens to the other athletes? Playing on a winning team can change lives and I found myself hoping they will continue to feel like winners, long after the season has ended.

I loved this book. I love to play sports but am not particularly interested in reading about sports. I picked this book up at a book fair for $2 and soon became immersed in it. Winning Sounds Like This is not just about basketball, it's a window into the deaf culture and how things that most of us take for granted are so different for other people. At Gallaudet Unversity, the ONLY deaf university in the world, basketball fans don't cheer and clap because the players wouldn't hear them, they wave their hands. Players can't rely on shouting another player's name, they must be in tune with their colleagues to know when to pass and when to receive. Student's don't listen to music, rather they turn the sound up so loud that they can feel the vibrations. I found this book to be so interesting, from learning about educational options for deaf students to learning how they interact on the court, and how they compete with those who can hear. Oh, and they don't like to be called "hearing impaired" because they don't see themselves as impaired. They are deaf, and they don't see it as an impairment. I thought this book was wonderful and have recommended it to numerous friends. It is really, really interesting.

Wayne Coffey not only knows sports but he knows how to write tight, action packed chapters. This story moves. Interpersed with backgrounds on the team members, the history of deaf culture, the story tracks the team through an incredible season. I am not an avid basketball fan nor did I have any particular interest in deaf culture, but this book captured my interest from the first page and held it throughout.A rare find.

Beautifully written that, at turns, is funny, touching, fascinating and absorbing. I read it at a single sitting.Such wonderful character studies of the players, their families and the world of Gallaudet. If you like basketball, if you like visiting other cultures or if you just like stories that bring people to life, you'll love this book. Highly recommended.

This book is so good I couldnt stop reading it! It's an inspirational story about human nature, what it takes to be the best and something I knew nothing about previously...deaf culture. It's a well written, must read for anyone who has ever worked hard for something...hearing or deaf.

Very disappointed. If you know anything about SharePoint already please don't bother getting this book. First off the image/print quality of all the screen captures in the book are so horrible you can't make out anything - they might has well left them out all together. 80% of this book just goes through the basics of how to create a based site and work with very basic features which nearly all people will learn on their own by just playing with it.

This book can be read and implemented in a intense weekend. By Monday everyone will be amazed at your expertise.I had to google some of the stuff in this book, because I am using sharepoint 365, and some commands are in a different place. Nothing very complicated.I would give this book 6 starts. Great job.Only recommendation to the author is to update it to the latest sharepoint edition.

I hoped to learn something new, but this book basically describes SharePoint features (templates) that can be used for some aspects of Project Management. You can learn the same by playing with SharePoint for a few days and reading some free online tutorials. There were a few nominal tips but nothing extraordinary that wouldn't have been learned with a little experience.

Pretty cool deal

This is the second book i have read by Dux. This book very much aligns with his previous book. I wish he would write another that was a little more technical, ie customized work flows, but i get it this is a good users guide for working with share point.

Simplicity at it's best. Many projects do not require overly complex methodologies or software to run them. At the end of the day, communication and collaboration counts for more than any thing else. Which is what Dux and his book bring to the table in clear and very concise ways utilizing a platform that is easy to use and is already available within most organizations. And if not available, there is always Office 365.

Ii consider myself a super user of Sharepoint. This book helped in some areas but I was still finding myself Googling questions after certain sections.

I enjoyed this book quite a lot I read thru it in about 2 days, I have a lot of experience with SharePoint so I skipped performing the actual practice scenarios and I can say this book definitely drove the message home. If you are either new or intermediate PM this book is a worthwhile read and if you are knowledgeable on SharePoint and want to know how to apply it toward your projects its a great start. My only observations is that the section of dashboards could probably be more in-depth and include more screen captures, aside from that the context of the book is straight forward and you can grow the knowledge from this book easily and adjust SharePoint to your needs.

This book's contents surprised me; the book's cover conveyed the impression that this would be a light-weight reference read. Instead, the only sections that were treated lightly were those that did not directly refer to online selling, such as deciding whether to delve into online work or not, or photography and any other preparation work. Numerous online venues were discussed at length, such as Etsy, Artfire, and eBay, among others. How these sites work, what the cost, how many listings allowed, time period of the contracts, and also hints and advice to the reader were covered in detail. The tone was informal, but extremely informative.

This book is amazing! I am hoping to go full-freelance with my artwork and start a business around that. This book touches on everything in detail, but is a very easy read. I think I took an entire notebook of notes! I love that it leads you to specific outside resources that can help you out including state and government resources, blogs, online shops, websites, etc. to help you along your journey. I have read several other books on the subject and they all pale in comparison to this one. So many books for artists dumb down the material and are all a bunch of exercises to help you figure out how starting a business makes you "feel" - not helpful! This book provides real-world references and material to lead you in the right direction. If you are serious about starting your own business or selling work online, this book is definitely the way to start!

This is a great reference book to keep around if you're remotely interested in making a living selling arts and crafts online. It lists virtually every available avenue to do so, as well as pros and cons of each. There is A LOT of references packed into this medium-sized book. I enjoyed the format which it was written. I know that I will continue to use this as a reference in the future and I will also refer others to this book as well.

Great book that is filled with useful information if you are thinking about starting a business online. The only downside is I didn't look to see that it was published several years ago, like 2013. And some of the small businesses mentioned are no longer in business.Other that that, I found it very informative and useful

Truly has everything. I just need more time to implement everything. Wish I had purchased it before I started my business.

Just got this in yesterday, and started skimming through it before diving in. It looks like it has just about all topic covered on how to get started. I like how they also have thought provoking questions that bring useful things to your attention that you may have not even considered. Can't wait to get started!

Still read this and I am excited about it ! A lot of ideals in this book that can help you start your business!

Great book for a beginner like me. It makes a nice addition to my library. No problems with the seller, item, nor shipping. Book arrived in great condition.
