What does it mean to be human? After you find out that everyone but one guy, a complete nutcase who intends to blow the rest of humanity up so he can be the official Last Man, are you more human...or less?And can you stop him?...So this was a lot of hard SF on the order of The Martian, although probably not quite as engineer-centric. But the style was much more like Roadside Picnic or Stanislaw Lem than it was your typical sci-fi writing, which gave it a heightened flavor. A philosopher's book with a ticking time bomb. There's a plot twist that I don't want to give away, but that pleased me very much with the core story. Can people change their minds, really? Truly? Blissfully, yes.

I truly enjoy Jason Dias' storytelling, and this is my favorite book by him to date. His writing is tight in this novel. It's emotional and gripping and ultimately full of hope, and chock-full of the complications that arise when starting a new society on a new world while watching the world of old die before your eyes. It ties in nicely with two earlier books, What Hope Wrought and Shooting Blanks, set in this story's past, though it's not an official sequel. I would, however, love to see a sequel to this book. This new world is rife with possibility.

This book is well written, with few grammatical errors. The idea behind it is reasonably well thought out. Thus, I give it 3 stars for those factors. But it simply is not to my taste, as it is dark and quite depressing. Earth has almost entirely fallen to its own violence, and a few survivors live on Mars. They are generationally split with a few born there on the red planet. Although the author throws a few small hints of hope into the end of the novel mostly it is a slog through dismal endings. This is not a space opera, neither is it really a hard science sci-fi, and it is not an exploration nor first contact. It is meant I think to be a novel about human weakness and isolation, almost a lost forever in the wilderness without any real hope. I would love to see this author write sci-fi full of optimism and possibility. I would definitely read that, because the author is talented.

All young people think they're different from their parents until they realize they're fundamentally not. Until they learn that there are some things, some needs, some emotions, that all people in the known universe share and some secrets within dark isolation that maybe should not be kept. Confronting mortality at the hands of a madman with no real way to stop him can make a person re-examine their priorities in a hurry. Finding Life on Mars is a poignant story of finding love, truth, solidarity, freedom, and oneself, set against the tense backdrop of surviving in an unforgiving alien environment while a ticking time bomb threatens to wipe out the very last of humanity.

What a fascinating read.I love and respect Dias' nonfiction work so much. I couldn't wait to see the world he imagined when life on Earth ends and a new world has to be developed on a planet so different than our own. What evolves in the story is more than those imaginings, though. Dias delivers a seamless blend of philosophical questions about what it means to be human, with characters trying to empathize with others whose emotional expression is different than their own, and a gripping plot where the threat of being destroyed is equally as tense as the struggle for survival.Highly recommended!

Finding Life On Mars is much more than a science fiction novel, although it satisfies most excellently in that regard. It is a delicate, tender, thoughtful examination of what it means to be human, what it means to love, and what it means to live. Dias manages to draw the reader swiftly and inescapably into the mind of what for most neurotypical readers should feel "other," and flips the construct so that outside is in, and inside is a wilderness, baffling and unmappable. Tense, gripping, action-packed and yet deeply emotional, this book is guaranteed to rivet the reader and linger long in the mind.

A story of what it means to be human, even if you don't feel you are. The science is fascinating, but the personal interactions and differences are more so. The main character/narrator is compelling. It's about relationships, understanding, adaptation, and survival in a harsh environment. A story with heart and a ticking clock.

This novel was painful to read. Cathartic. It hurt but I couldn't stop. The humanity held within and the ridiculously stern fight against it had me cheering for all involved. Bravo to the author, and to all people who struggle to know what is right.

My students asked for some extra kinematics questions for practice. I gave them 6 at random from the book. I asked them what they got. They showed me their answers. Solutions in the book for questions 8, 13, and 17 were different from what they got. I confirmed that the book was wrong. I even ran them by a colleague in the math department. Not happy. Yes... I should have vetted the Qs and the As but I just got the book in the mail and had assumed that the problems had been vetted. If someone can show us that we made a mistake, I will happily change my review.I

The questions aren't AP level, but it is a good survey of the topics and gives good drill in the concepts. It gives good fundamental review so that you won't shoot yourself in the foot. I would call it "Five Steps to Nothing Beliw a 3". I think that's a solid review strategy.

I bought the kindle version. The pictures are so small that I can not read any of them. Many of the answers are just wrong. The answer key is filled with a huge amount of mistakes. The editors did not do their job.

I am really surprised by my own assessment of this book. But after reviewing these questions for a while, I don't think most people will need this book when preparing for the Physics AP exam.The questions that are included are the standard kind that are contained within practice exams and test prep guides. But unlike those other books, there are not review sections included here to provide a context for these questions. In addition, the answer key is not in depth enough to really help people understand WHY they should be arriving at the correct answer in all cases.There are also examples where, in the beginning of a certain section, they will tell you to assume a certain constant or variable is equal to X. But they never explain WHY they choose those values for the sample questions.CONCLUSIONI am giving the book an extra star because the questions themselves are challenging and appropriate for the most part. But there are tons of questions that can be downloaded online if you just need to challenge yourself with questions. If you are just looking to cram for the exam without seeking a deeper understanding, there are better ways to do it in my humble opinion.

If you are looking for practice problems and don’t want to pay more for test taking advice that you don’t need, then this is an excellent choice. This book offers only a one page introduction and then has a large section of practice questions, grouped by topic. After the problems comes the answer section. Many answers are just that, the answer, with the final equation. Quite a few offer a very brief explanation. There is an average of perhaps 7 answers per page of this 6” x 9” book, which gives an indication of how brief the explanations, if offered, are. Again, if you are looking for practice rather than to be instructed, then this book offers what you want without needing to pay for extra pages that you don’t need.

My son took AP Physics C in high school this year. He found that the book was very helpful in preparing for the final AP exam. He says that the questions were similar enough to the actual exam that he felt more prepared. It was well organized and had clear explanations. My 13 year old daughter also took a crack at a couple of questions and miraculously got them right by applying some basic knowledge that she had.But overall, it was great practice for my son, who's credits depended on having a great grade.

My company has a ton of community support groups including one to encourage interest in STEM fields. I help moderate that group. I have a calculus and physics background so I enjoy seeing others ( especially girls) interested. I brought this book to our latest meeting and it was a huge hit. There are problems (with solutions) to prep for the AP physics exam but really, anyone who is interested in physics will find this book stimulating. Met our needs perfectly for group challenges.

My nephew used this book to study for a placement test at the college where he is going to be a freshman this fall. He found it to be easy to read and designed in a way that was very user-friendly. The exam he took was a university-level placement test which allowed him to skip ahead to advanced physics courses, but the basic principles are similar to what one would achieve with the AP Physics test.

I taught an OT intensive this summer at the Baptist Seminary in Mexico City. For one of the student assignments I wanted them to write a Bible Study using the content covered in class. However, I wanted to also teach them some exegetical method in the process. I asked a colleague in the Christian Ed. department for a good "worksheet" to give them. "I use 'Transformational Bible Study,' page 161," was the reply. I converted the text to a worksheet and then translated it into Spanish.The students loved it. This Bible Study forces the preparer to ask deep questions of the text, without being esoteric and inaccessible. Even with my poor translation, the principles outlined in the approach were easily grasped by the Spanish speaking students. What cinched it for me was that this method is geared toward a faith response in the recipient. I will continue to use this valuable resource wherever in the world I am called to teach.

I would highly recommend this text to anyone leading a Sunday School, Bible Study, Small Group, or Cell Group. You will find a great foundation to add to your teaching ministry. It will always be within an arm's reach of my desk whenever I am preparing a lesson.

This book is extremely helpful for anyone who is attempting to teach adults. I've read a lot of books on creative ideas for teaching, but Dr. Rick and Shera Melick get to the core of the problem with Bible teaching for adults. They emphasize understanding and teaching to your learners by contextualizing your lesson to include several learning styles and approaches, while remaining grounded in Biblical truth. Later in the book, they offer a model of how to write a lesson plan that can be understood by all types of learners. I used this model, and it was not only doable, but successful! I will continue to refer to this book for tips on teaching adults.Also, I was surprised to see that this book was offered in kindle edition. I was very pleased with the intuitive nature of this ebook, which I cannot say for some of the other ebooks I've purchased. All around, it was a great purchase.

On the positive side, there are some interesting images here from inside the factory that can't be found in other books on Ferrari. On the negative side there are some errors, both typos and factual.

A picture book that belongs in every Ferrai's fan library.A collection photgraphs from the era when Ferria's were truly hand made.

I've got easily a dozen books on Our Favourite Red Cars, but this is one of the best. Mr. Ludvigsen was given some pretty free access to the Ferrari works through the years and took full advantage of it. There's some good coverage of the early V8 cars, which I've always had a soft spot for.Be aware the pictures are all B&W, but the content is fantastic. Highly recommended.Search out other stuff by Ludvigsen; if there's something he doesn't know about cars, it ain't worth knowing.

Very good history of the factory and cars produced during this period. Some really unique photos of factory during this period. Highly recommended.

I usually don't take the time to review every book I buy. But I had to say something about this one. I'm a professional gardener and I find this book to be my favorite. There are more details for specific plants in other books, but none of the books I have, including the horticulture society ones, connect all the dots of essential pruning techniques in a way that's memorable and meaningful. Some say she's redundant and she is; but I get why she reiterates things, it's an effective teaching tool. Something about the way Cass presents and reiterates things makes the principles easy to remember because you don't necessarily have to remember specific techniques for specific plants. Instead, she's actually teaching us how to apply techniques based on the nature of the plant itself. It really encourages us to pay attention and develop a relationship with plants rather than becoming an academic subject matter expert. Consequently, anyone can learn to correctly prune from this book. And the world is certainly a better place because of that. Thanks Cass.

I rarely if ever review books (I need to do better) but I have to take a minute to recognize this book. I'm an ISA Certified Arborist with lots of knowledge about trees and shrubs. Cass Turnbull has created a master piece. She simplifies complex topics, writes with an upbeat, engaging style, and includes clear illustrations. Fundamentally she has an excellent grasp of plant biology, reactions to various cuts, and why/where pruning fits into the grand scheme of things.I love this book so much that I give a copy to every employee when I begin teaching him or her how to prune. If friends and colleagues express any interest in learning to prune, I tell them about Cass.Sadly Cass is no longer with us. But I suspect this book will live on for some time. It's just that good.

A very nice guide to pruning and some other gardening concepts. Very good information, presented in a balanced way, with an engaging voice. My one complaint is that so much of the book is taken up by comments about the ways people do things incorrectly. I get it, most people do stupid things with gardening, and more so with pruning specifically. I'm a professional gardener, and see plenty of it every day. Overall a great guide, I would recommend it for beginners looking to understand the basics and more experienced people looking for tips about pruning specific things. However it could probably be about 1/4 shorter without mentioning at every turn the wrong way something is done when she instructs on a superior way to do something.

I enjoyed reading this book. It is smooth and easy especially for beginners. It gives a big picture about pruning, however, it does not delve into details much. Illustrations are helpful but sometimes not enough (eg grape pruning). Overall I recommend this book but it needs to be supplemented with more detailed sources.

I have 5+ pruning books; none help like this one. I had met Cass at a Seattle Garden show many years ago. She finally helped me to realize it's not WHEN to prune but to prune by type of shrub. I have gone through all editions and now will use this 3rd edition as my diary for pruning notes. Especially with Cass gone, which is still hard to believe. Rest in peace, Cass.

Down to earth pruning instructions. For nearly every pruning book out there, you will be given conflicting advice. It's nice to have Cass to say "Who cares?" Prune, but understand the consequences of what you're doing if you do it out of season or badly. For me it took the panic away that I was going to kill a plant and allowed me to be a little more understand of what was going on. A very good read.

This is a wonderful book for anyone who needs to understand how to prune.It starts off with giving you a foundation for understanding pruning. Why is it important? What is its purpose? How do plants decide where to put out new growth? What are the different types of cuts? When should you prune? They aren't long sections, but they are thorough enough to give you a solid introduction.After that, she turns to the individual plant families and describes in detail the specifics for each.She also uses a bit of humor here and there to keep the book interesting. It's not dry reading, which is quite the accomplishment.I've found it immensely helpful already and I've only had it a couple of weeks. This is staying on my shelf for years to come.

It's too bad Cass Turnbull is no longer with us. Her insight and wonderful sense of humor regarding pruning should not be lost on any gardener. If you are just learning or a seasoned gardener her advice is invaluable. Buy this book and use it until it's worn out and you have to buy another one. Hoping it never goes out of print.
