Having many hiking books of the Smoky Mountains this is by far still the best one out there. The discriptions of the hike is why you buy this book. The discriptions tell you what you are looking at, history, and land. I look at other books and then reference this one as to what the hike really is like and what I am going to encounter and see along the way. Also there are hikes and places in this book you will not find in any other book for example: Mills Creek Falls Trail which cannot be found in any other book because this trail today is not a maintained trail in the park but is easily found and hiked. This may be an older book but is still the best. An oldie but still a goodie.

This first edition contains some information that is omitted from the second edition, such as specific information about manways and abandoned trails. It also includes the time it takes to travel a particular trail, a feature missing from the second edition. Nonetheless, either edition is a great resource for a Smokies hiker. I particularly enjoyed the historic and cultural background information that goes well beyond a standard "trail guide."

I've owned my copy about a year. At first, I was a bit overwhelmed with the comprehensiveness. After using it to plan and go on two 3-night hikes in the GSMNP, I have come to greatly appreciate this book and especially its layout. Mr. Wise needs to be commended on the organization of the material. His trail descriptions are arranged by sections or watersheds, which corresponds to entries points to the Park. This allows the hiker to more easily plan since all the connecting trails descriptions are grouped together. I own three hiking trail books on the Smokies, and I keep coming back to this one.

I got the book quicker than I thought I would.The book is good.If youre getting for the man trails be warned that you may encounter switchbacks or animal trails and get lost.

This book gives useful details about all the available trails, and their situations are detailed with maps. This book is a "must have" for anyone serious about hiking the beautiful trails of the Great Smoky Mountains. I would have liked the pictures to be in color, but even in black and white they are useful, and many of the descriptions are quite poetic.

A nice alternative to the standard trail guide to Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Best for those who focus on the GSMNP back country.

A beautifully written, researched and printed book, On Trails truly grooved a path in my heart. I have long enjoyed hiking in the mountains around my city and now find myself contemplating the trail, thinking about the makers, the other walkers, and the course of history and time that shaped these paths. Moor is a wonderful storyteller and researcher. I reread many chapters and looked up a few beautiful words I wished to understand better. I am glad to know more about some of the history of the United States trail system, and how that connects us to the broader world, both geographically and as fellow travelers. Although I will likely never have the opportunity to hike the Appalachian Trail, this book definitely planted an interesting little seed in me; I'm intrigued to see what spouts from it. Thanks, Robert Moor, for the inspiring exploration.

Let me be very clear. For anyone who likes history, this is a must read. I stumbled across this book on Amazon whilst searching for unique history books. Clearly this is the case with Robert Moor's On Trails: An Exploration.It isn't at all what I expected—it's a lot better! This book is an exploration of the trail as a planet-wide phenomenon; the trail's impact on science, animals, us, and the earth herself. Here, the trail becomes a metaphor for just about everything else. In "On Trails" we follow all sorts of paths ranging from traces left by an early life form hundreds of millions of years ago, to philosophical constructs about the physical and philosophical differences we Homo Sapiens give trails and paths: "...the difference between a trail and a path is directional: paths extend forward, whereas trails extend rearward." Paths..."are lines projected forward in space by the intellect... by contrast, trails tend to form in reverse, messily, from the passage of dirty feet."It is a well-written book that will resonate with you if your brain works like mine—that is to say, a mind that is curious and wants to take a closer look at things.On Trails: An Exploration, is a neatly tied bundle of those wild ideas we dream up when leaning back against the pack near the summit of a peak 4 days out from the nearest road. While it probably didn't happen this way, On Trails makes me wonder if the author, after wandering about in the green world carrying a heavy backpack for a couple of weeks, sat down all hot and sweaty, peeled off his socks in a moment of sheer ecstasy, then turned and asked, in the finest of non sequitur traditions, "Do you want to know the difference between a trail and a path?" Indeed!

As I expected, this book goes far afield (pun intended) from just human trails. Trails was just a great excuse to write a book about all sorts of subjects related to trails and various animal behaviors. The writing style is casual and fun. While his interest in trails was the result of having done the Appalachian Trial, he goes back to the primordial ooze for the first trails, and explores everything you could ever want to know about trails, and then some, from ant trails, to elephant an zebra trails, to how the road system effectively followed old Indian trails. Near the end of the book, he kept coming to what seemed like a logical place to end the book, but over and over again he would find new avenues to explore, so it was like a series of false summits. But in aggregate, it was a very interesting and worthwhile book to read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fantastic book! I loved the parts about hiking and walking, which is really my main interest, but On Trails is about so much more. Robert makes connections across disparate contexts that make you think about things, about the interconnectedness of things and about trails and paths and how they may lead where they go (including my own life path). The book is well written and flows naturally. One of my more enjoyable reads in a long time.

Besides the constant excitement and satisfying alien world, this book changed the way I saw fallen logs for the rest of my life. Held up great for me on an adult rereading.

It's sometime in an Orwellian future, where any dissenter is deported to a newfound inhabitable planet. A prison ship develops a glitch, however; it crashes on the destination planet, killing half of the deportees. Five survivors--a rugged outdoorsman, an empathic computer tech, and three tough street kids--band together against hostile aliens and a psychotic ex-M.P. who also survives the crash.While not particularly deep--it was written for teenagers, after all--"Exiles" was an exciting read.

I read this book 20yrs ago when I was 12, and really enjoyed it. Maybe I would find these books ridiculous today, but this book and series appealed to me enough in middle school that I can pretty clearly recall them, and I've always been a voracious reader who cruised through many long forgotten titles as a kid.

I read this book in the [...], and [...] later, I can still remember some of the mental images from it. Definitely an enjoyable read for young sci-fi fans and a nice break from Star Trek novels and the like.
