Got this as a book for a family friends toddler who is a fan of having stories read to him. Since I'm a sleep researcher I figured this would be an appropriate gift for a birthday. The little guy is given the choice of which story to pick for bedtime and I've been informed that this is one of his top picks now. Consistently. I think that right there speaks volumes. The hard version of this book was well put together, not coming apart and was cut cleanly.Very satisfied and so is the birthday boy.

this books deserves my review (not a lot of time here being a new mom). the moment my 11 month old got hold of this (he is a little booklover), he would start flipping the pages and he wants me to read it every time. the illustrations are so captivating and they well done! i will buy more il sung na books. all praises!

Warm and beautiful book for little ones. This book is a rare find with warm and wonderful illustrations that aid greatly the few repetitive words written. It is engaging and makes you want to go to the end of the book without skipping a lovely page. This is a wonderful book to read to your kids at bed time. The story centers around many different animals sleeping at night while the watchful wide-eyed owl keeps awake at night. This book shows kids that different animals sleep in different ways - some sleep standing up and some sleep while swimming. The drawings are warm and aid in helping kids themselves fall asleep as they can enter an imaginary world in their minds where all creatures are starting to sleep...except, of course the watchful owl, who will take his turn when the sun comes up.

This is a very sweet nighttime book. The images are gorgeous! The text is a great length for little ones: short and sweet. There are opposites and numbers (well 1 and "both" but I usually say "2 eyes…"), and my LO learned to say "owl" because we read this every night. I will say that at first I found the sunshine page a little jarring because my little one is supposed to be winding down and getting ready for nighttime sleep, not for daytime, but the last page saves the day: it gets back to being about sleeping and I can wrap it up by saying to my little one "Say good-night to owl and now say good-night to Mama"

This is a great little board book to add to your night time collection. The illustrations are gorgeous and eye-catching, perfect for infants and young toddlers. The wording is simple, gentle, and not too exciting (won't get your little one all geared up again just before bed) but is still interesting enough to hold a little one's attention. My toddler loves looking for the owl and pointing him out on each page. Not recommended for kids over age 2.5 though. After that it's much too simple and could get boring. It's a very short book and doesn't have much of a story, which is what kids around 3 and up are looking for it seems.

This is such a lovely bedtime book. My 4-month-old starts impatiently squirming or grunting with most board books*, but with this one she is enraptured until the end. I don't know if it's the beautiful images or the soothing cadence that the words create, but it's a wonderful experience every night.*Not the case with cloth books or any other books she can chew on. She's a voracious reader, quite literally.

I bought this book for my two year old daughter. She likes the vibrant colors and the animals in the pictures. She is very attached to it and it made a great birthday gift. I liked it, too. It was a fun little book for me to read to her. I really enjoy children's books that are enjoyable for both parent & child, to which, this book qualifies.

Overall I like this book. The story is cute, but sometimes I find the illustrations of the owl to be a little creepy. I don't see anyone else mentioning this so maybe it's just me, but I keep meaning to ask other people if they feel the same way. If they do, I might get rid of it or give it away. Otherwise it's a wonderfully illustrated book. I'm an artist so I always appreciate a beautiful piece of work, which this is.

As is usual for this series, its a very good reference book, and also quite readable. I keep it with me when I'm traveling and working on XML related things, the size being a good tradeoff.

Perfect read for the subject

The book was in A+ condition, but the shipping was slow, no wonder though, since it was sendt to Norway from New Zealand. The book was thoroughly packed. The seller is highly recommended. The book itself seems to just what i was looking for, alot of references :)

I bought this guide because I needed a quick lookup for XML schema elements (something you'd think would be readily available online, but isn't - at least not in a usable form). The bulk of the book (70 of its 162 pages - about half) is dedicated to XSD, so I was very happy with what I got. The first 30 pages cover XML itself (all the nitpicking details like predefined entities, what characters are allowed in attribute names, etc). The next 17 pages cover DTD (which you may occasionally still need to know, even these days). The next 70 cover XML Schema, and the book finishes up with an additional 43 pages on Relax-NG and Schematron (two competing, and not very common, schema definition formats).I agree with other reviewers that the book would have been complete without the Relax-NG and Schematron coverage, but it would have just been 43 pages shorter if that was the case - there's really not much else they could have said about XML, DTD and XSD and still have been a concise "pocket reference". This book is actually pretty thick for an O'Reilly pocket reference - I have four other pocket guides on my bookshelf right now, and the other three have 120, 124 and 66 pages each. By that standard, I figure the coverage of Relax-NG and Schematron were just a "buy one get one free" type of add-on, especially since this book costs the same as all the other pocket reference books. This book is a perfect reference for somebody who needs a quick, handy reference to XML schema and the occasional XML rule.

The other review book I received yesterday was XML Pocket Reference (3rd Edition) by Simon St. Laurent and Michael Fitzgerald. Depending on what you're looking for, this may or may not the book for you...Contents: Introduction; XML Structures; Document Type Definitions; W3C XML Schema; RELAX NG; Schematron; XML Specifications; IndexAdmittedly, trying to cover "XML" in a single book is a daunting task. XML is made up of so many standards and technologies (XPath, XForms, XML Schema, etc.) that you either have to specialize your coverage area or be ready to publish a *really* heavy book. To their credit, the authors stripped out XSLT into it's own pocket guide. That act keeps this particular book small enough to fit in your pocket and that's good. But if you're wanting information on XSLT and think this might be your book, forget it.Next, the XML Structures and Document Type Definition chapters seemed to be a little confusing. There was something introduced that I had never heard of before... something called "Productions" followed by syntax that looked like regular expression language. Never having seen that term before in my XML reading, I went back to the introduction to see what the authors wanted to convey there. The only explanation was "As each structure is discussed, applicable productions from the XML 1.0 and 1.1 specs will be listed in the order in which they appear in the specs." So, I still really don't know what productions are, and I probably have to go to the specs to find that out. The description of each section in an XML document, like CDATA or declarations, was nice though. The book starts to become really useful when you get into the XML Schema section. There they go into each of the elements along with each attribute that can be used with the element. This is the type of reference information I'd expect to see in a pocket guide. Something I can turn to quickly as a refresher for what parameters or attributes I can use with an element, or to gain a quick understanding of an element I haven't seen before. This same structure is followed for the RELAX NG and Schematron schema languages, so the book will be helpful if you live in those worlds also.Basically, I found the XML Pocket Guide to be a little "hit and miss". If the title had been "XML Schema Pocket Guide", I'd have felt like the book was pretty on target. Trying to call it the XML Pocket Guide seems to infer there's a lot more in here than there actually is, and a buyer might get a copy and be highly disappointed in what it doesn't cover. If you're looking for schema info, you'll love the book. If that's a secondary reason for you to get the book, you might be disappointed.

My problem with this book is that I was hoping it would concentrate more on just XML Schema, something I think most people would prefer. Of course, how I am qualified to make that kind of statement is beyond me ;-) But here is my reasoning: A fairly large portion of the book covers DTDs, RELAX NG, and Schematron. DTDs, while ubiquitous, are being supplanted by XML Schema. Usage of RELAX NG and Schematron are, by the book's own admission, not widespread. So it seems that all three of these technologies could have been admitted, as were many other XML-related technologies (XSLT, XPath, etc.)In addition, I feel the regular-expression-like inclusions should have been omitted. These include something referred to as Productions in one part of the book and Contents in another. Maybe good for hard-core CS people, but pretty much useless for those of us who just want to work with XML Schema. An ideal replacement would have been some examples illustrating sample usage of various elements and attributes. All in all, the descriptions accompanying the elements and attributes are pretty good. Unfortunately, that accounts for only about one-third of the book. But it only costs $10 and it is small, so maybe it's worth it.

The majority of the new material in this book is on different schema specifications. Schema, Relax NG and Schematron are covered. A handy book to have around when you are hacking XML. The online free documentation is not as handy as the content as it's organized in this book.

About the Author

Biographical Statement for Nomination of Daniel C. Harris forJ. Calvin Giddings Award for Excellence in Analytical Chemical EducationI was born in 1948 in Brooklyn, New York. As a teenager, I enjoyed a science program on Saturdays at Columbia University, where I took note of especially good teaching by astronomy professor Lloyd Motz. In my freshman year at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, excellent teaching of organic chemistry by Daniel S. Kemp diverted me from biochemistry to chemistry. A spectroscopy class from George F. Whitesides led me to Whitesides and his student Chuck Casey (later President of the American Chemical Society) for senior thesis research. I developed a strong consciousness for high quality teaching. Two other classes with noteworthy teaching quality were quantum mechanics from John S. Waugh and group theory from F. A. Cotton. After graduating from MIT shortly before my 20th birthday, I headed to Caltech where I joined the research group of Harry B. Gray—an exceptional lecturer. After a year as a teaching assistant in organic chemistry, George S. Hammond and Harry Gray recognized a spark for teaching and offered me the opportunity to team teach an advanced freshman course. My graduate student partner, Michael D. Bertolucci, and I were given carte blanche to develop an interesting course for freshman that would not overlap other courses in the curriculum. We chose an overview of general chemistry for one term, followed by two terms of introduction to group theory and spectroscopy. We conducted a critique of each other’s lecture immediately after every class. I placed highest value in interest, content, clarity, and physical understanding, which became main goals in my textbook writing. At the age of 21, I found myself driven to write lecture notes which, upon the recommendation of Harry Gray, evolved into the book Symmetry and Spectroscopy. I team-taught the freshman course with other graduate students and had the academic rank of Instructor during my last year of graduate studies. For part of that year, I was a postdoc in the fledgling field of 13C-NMR spectroscopy with John D. Roberts. After two years as a postdoc at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City with Philip Aisen—an exemplary mentor—I started my first faculty position at the University of California at Davis in 1975. I was assigned to teach analytical chemistry for sophomores and accelerated freshmen. This assignment was interesting because I had never taken a course in analytical chemistry. I arrived at MIT after analytical chemistry became an elective and flew through MIT too quickly to partake in the analytical course. I had practical analytical experience from undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral research. My source of instruction in chemical equilibrium was the graduate course “Aquatic Chemistry” taught by J. J. Morgan at Caltech. At Davis, I sat in on an analytical courses taught by a senior member of the department to “learn the ropes” before being thrust before my first students in analytical chemistry. My burning desire at Davis was to be the best teacher I could be. I was known for being available at all hours for student questions, for circulating through laboratories every day, and for memorizing the names and faces of every student. It became apparent to students that sitting in the back row of a 300-seat lecture hall did not offer immunity from being called upon by name to answer a question during lecture. I brought a demonstration into almost every lecture and each term ended with a series of explosions. The last class each term attracted far more students than were enrolled in the course. The majority of my students at Davis were life science majors whose interests resonated with my research interest in metalloproteins.I surveyed every analytical textbook I could find and tau

I had the opportunity to borrow this book, since nearly every chemist I've met owns a copy, but when I saw that it was one of the few texts on nearly everyone's shelf in industry (during my co-op), I decided I need my own copy. I don't find it easy to understand - my A in the class is more of a testament to the excellent teacher than to this text. And DEFINITELY do yourself the favor of buying the solutions manual if you intend to wrestle with these problems. It saved a little of my sanity.

Ok, so I originally bought the regular textbook on amazon for $147, hoping that it might come with a code to access the ebook (I know it didn't say it came with it, but a lot of new textbooks do, so I thought I'd try). Got the regular textbook, and it didn't come with anything, so I was searching for ebook access, because I didn't want to have to carry the book to class with me all the time. The WH Freeman website wanted to charge over $100 just for the ebook access code. Then I came across this amazon listing, but was hesitant because there were no reviews or pictures and not much of a description. Despite the hesitation, I decided to go for it since it was sold by Amazon...either it would be perfect and I could return the original textbook, or it would be the wrong item and I could return it and keep the original textbook.Well, I got the item today and it is perfect! I understand that some people like real textbooks, but my main thing was getting the ebook, and it's a plus that I get a hard copy (even if it's loose leaf) to read when I'm not at school or get tired of reading it on the computer. I'm thinking this loose leaf book will fit into a large binder, but not sure yet. Plus, it came with a perfectly legitimate 12-month access code to the ebook! In my opinion, $94 for the loose leaf + ebook access is MUCH more worth it than $150 for the regular textbook, which I will be returning tomorrow! So, get this one if you want the ebook access or not...if you want an actual hard textbook, this is not for you.

Although it saved me a ton of money renting from Amazon, I wish they would have at least wrapped the book inside the box. The binding is a bit loose, but I'll just be careful with it 'til the end of this semester. Definitely beats the student bookstore on campus.

This book is great! I purchased it for my Analytical and Instrumental courses and it helped significantly. The book is easy to understand. It also contains examples and problems that would assist the students to understand the materials better in addition with the lectures.

It has decent example problems with work shown. However, I would appreciate more detailed explanations for concepts and example problems. Some concepts are not explained properly.

This book was incredibly difficult to read and was of little use to me in analytical chemistry. The author does a poor job of explaining certain ideas in the book and completely skips doing examples at certain points, leaving much uncertainty as to how the answer was derived. Chapters are split up in ways that make little sense. For example, titration should be covered in a single chapter, but it is instead split up between several chapters in this book. Hopefully they fix these issues in the new edition.

Great amount of info, interesting look at analytical techniques. One of the best information-based textbooks I’ve ever used.

Just to be clear, the book quality was great (no tears, missing pages, etc.), but this book is NOT going to cut it if you are taking a college-level quantitative chem class. Sometimes you can get away with an older edition of a text, but unfortunately, this is not one of them. There are many new formulas and methods in the newer editions that this one does not have.
