Great read and continuation of "Narrative… ". After visiting Dublin and Meath a couple of years ago out of sheer curiosity of the culture and origin of my last name, I being a man of color as well had such similar experiences as Mr Douglass had over a century ago. Each page resonated dearly with me as I recalled fondly how welcoming and kind the Irish people were and seemed oblivious to the fact that our skin tones differed from one another. The history in this book is incredible and just helps paint the picture of the iconic Douglass that much more with the various shades of emerald found on the great Isle. Ever wondered why a Quaker is called a Quaker? Did you know how and why the Great Potato famine struck in Ireland? Did you know Mr Douglass was touring the country during the potato famine? Incredible history within this minded work, looking forward to rereading.

Very enjoyable. Lots of good quotes from primary materials. Very interesting subject. More research should he done on how the international abolitionism movement shaped Frederick Douglass into the venerated statesman that he became.

Loved the first hand accounts that supported the entire book. A must read for any FD scholar or enthusiast. I highly recommend.

It's no exaggeration to say that Laura Vanderkam's writing has changed my life. If you only buy one productivity or time management book this year, make it Off the Clock. Highly recommended!

I consider Laura Vanderkam's work life changing. I took a cue from her book 168 Hours and created a 100 Dreams List the year I turned 40. I've been living fuller and more purposefully life ever since. With Off the Clock, she is helping me to tune into those experiences and helping me refine my approach to designing the life I want.With Vanderkam's help I am working to let go of the idea of time scarcity. It's an easy trap to fall into since busy seems to be a badge of honor. But my goal is to have more white space on my calendar (so I can be creative and experience the world around me) and to linger in moments that matter to me.If you can't remember on Monday what you did over the weekend, you need to read this book.If your days are flying by too fast, you need to read this book.If you feel like you never have time for the people or things you love, you need to read this book.

Both practical and philosophical, Off the Clock is my favorite Vanderkam book to date. It comes at just the right time -- as I'm trying to make the most of some big life changes. A great balance of interviews, data, and personal anecdotes, Off the Clock is full of ideas you can implement immediately, as well as ways to reframe the way you look at your time and your life. I'm a working parent with a creative side hustle, and this book makes me feel relaxed about what I want to accomplish, not anxious. Highly recommend, along with her life-changing older book, 168 Hours.

This is my favorite of Laura Vanderkam's books. It combines practical tips along with research and philosophical references and musings. This is so much more than a time management book. It really opened my eyes to seeing time and, consequently,my schedule differently. Looking at things weekly/monthly/by season has made a huge difference for me, as well as thinking about what I truly want to spend time on and making those things a priority. I'm fairly certain I highlighted something on nearly every page. I especially loved the parts about how to be sure to remember these great memories you're creating. The worksheets in the back were helpful in trying to implement some of the things she mentioned. The case studies and the time diary analysis were helpful in showing how other people view/spend time.

This book gave me some helpful insights into time and productivity. Before reading this I already considered myself fairly productive and wasn't sure what I'd get our of the book. However there are some very thought provoking concepts in ths book.I am charging ahead with one of the tips basically around doing a little every day. There are a few projects that seem to overwhelm...I would start and stop many times in the past few years. Thinking that I can just do a little each day (or week) has actually gotten me farther on these projects in the past 2 weeks than I have gotten in the past 2 years!

I am a professor of microbiology & infectious diseases. I have studied productivity approaches for many years now, and mentor postdoctoral fellows and graduate students on time investment - not time management. There have been many outstanding books over the years within this realm, but of all of the books I have read and studied (easily over 100), this book is clearly the most outstanding of them all. Laura teaches us to understand our relationship with time. As I mentioned, I am a strong advocate of time investment -- making sure you schedule your priorities first. Laura embraces this within the section on "tending your garden", but goes significantly beyond time investment. You MUST get this book! Her insights and approaches come down to one central thing -- make your life meaningful and memorable. Get the book -- a gem like this needs to be read over and over and should be on your coffee table, bookshelf, and in your shoulder bag. It truly is that good! Cheers to Laura Vanderkam on this masterpiece!

With non-fiction, if I come away from a book with one good idea I feel I've spent my money well. Vanderkam's latest left me with far more than one, but the idea that we really want more memories--not time--was particularly poignant.

I an a mother of 5 boys who works full time as a college professor. This book helped me to analyze my time and deliberately put in more enjoyable time! I love the idea of not letting your spoiled, present-self control your narrative!

The Kindle edition is just scans of the book. This might be fine, since the scans are good resolution, but Amazon does not provide a way to zoom or cut the margins. I literally had to get a magnifying glass to read a computer screen. Infuriating!

Language, Truth and Logic is an audacious book, written when Ayer was 26. It is not the sort of book that would be written by a philosopher at 56 or even 36. But at 26 you can still convince yourself that your position is right even as all of the great philosophers of history are wrong (or at least mislead and mistaken). This is the theme and tone of Ayer's audacious book. The appeal of the book to undergraduates is great. I use it at the very beginning of a course I teach in the history Analytic Movement in philosophy, and it is a good beginning for that study. I would recommend it to anyone with even a casual interest in Twentieth Century Philosophy.

There is no better single source of doing philosophy via the logical positivism method than by reading this book. It's really two books in one. The Introduction is a rather thorough reply to his critics of the book's original lengthier substance, and if nothing else is read, the Introduction provides an excellent example of what logical positivism is, why it is regarded highly or poorly depending on the reader, and why some people think this kind of analysis defeats the whole purpose of philosophy. The book does try to end metaphysics as we know it, but in the course of establishing new principles (i.e., verifiability), it itself becomes indefensible against the accusation of itself relying on its own premises to prove its own conclusions (a charge Ayer coyly ignores), otherwise known as circularity.The fact that many Anglo-American philosophers still do philosophy in this manner -- after Ayer's style -- is reason alone to study this book thoroughly. It is concisely written, clear and unambiguious (if not a tad bit too analytical), and exemplary of Anglo-American style of doing philosophy. I don't think too many philosophers subscribe to its own circular metaphysics, but many, if not most, current philosophers adopt its principles as a "method" -- something which Ayer later (in "The Meaning of Life") claims was his aim all along.What is disappointing to me, at least in the body of Ayer's works read thus far, is his failure to address "verifiability" in light of Popper's "falsification" doctrine. What exactly constitutes "verifiability" or empirical truth? And, how does the verification of empirical truth differ from the "empirical falsification" of Popper? Perhaps Ayer addresses this problem somewhere, but I've not found it. It would be an interesting problem to see solved.

Should be required reading in all colleges. Teaches the fallacy of making portentous-sounding statements that delight the ideologue but mean absolutely nothing.

Requires concentrated uninterrupted attention but it is worth it .
