Big Nate: In the Zone, by Lincoln Peirce

From Booklist

Still suffering through sixth grade at P. S. 38, Nate Wright is up to his usual entertaining tricks in the sixth book of Peirce’s best-selling series. He jumps on (and breaks) a beanbag chair in the library, repeatedly hits his head with an empty water bottle, and draws a steady stream of irreverent cartoons. For the first half of the book, Nate embarrasses himself in a variety of ways: getting stage fright in front of the entire school, earning a “D” in social studies, and being mocked by the school’s most popular guy. But things turn around with the apparent help of his friend’s good-luck charm, and Nate mends his reputation and the hurt feelings of his band’s lead singer. Peirce focuses on Nate’s school challenges rather than on his home life, but there is a sweet moment when Nate’s father confesses that he wasn’t a stellar sixth-grade student either. Peirce’s drawings are amusing but also surprisingly expressive, capturing everything from the agony of facing a teacher’s tantrum to the joy of a surprise free period. Grades 3-6. --Abby Nolan

WE LOVE BIG NATE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! He is hysterical!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have two sons that are 8 and 10 years old and a 12 year old daughter, and all three of them love him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bought this for my husband for Christmas. He enjoys Nate daily in the newspaper comic strip and really liked the book. Once he read it though, he passed it on to a friend. The book is sturdy and pleasing to the eye. Arrived in perfect shape.

The Big Nate series is a humorous book for children. Of course, the main character is Nate, and with his friends they have moments that tickle most children's funny bones. Using disrespectful words and actions (I'm looking at you, Nate) they manage to hold out some very hard moments. If you, as a, parent, (if you are one) Want your child to be trained for no foul language (stupid, downwd, etc.) Then stay away. Though if you don't mind, the series is nice and long for entertainment purposes, and a powerful read. Keep reading the series, as Nate's got quite the story to tell you.

I bought this book a bit hesitantly because of the price. For some reason, graphic novels are always extremely expensive. I don't get why, but it just is like that. I was about to board a seven hour plane flight and I wanted some entertainment other than movies and Modern Family. The book was hilarious! I find Nate even more likeable in this book than in others, which proves his character growth. Chad and Maya's relationship is supercute, and it has a good message. The main reason I looooove this book is how funny it is! Since April break, I've read this book...20 times? That actually might be an understatement. ;)

Our 2 grandsons have been reading Big Nate for years. Our youngest tells me exactly when the next one is due out, I put it on my wish list on Amazon & surprise him for a b'day, Christmas, or just a fun visit surprise. We live 3 hrs. from our grandsons, so it's fun to have the newest book for them when they visit. They both read Big Nate and read it over & over. Of course, Grandma & Grandpa love to have them read to us too. Books are a great gift for any child, but especially this age.

My son loves Big Nate!!!! Perfect series for an 11 yo boy!!! He has read them all! :)

Received the book in excellent condition. Pages are crisp and corners don't show any wear. My grandson loves these ( Big Nate) series of books.

At first I thought this book would be crummy on my kindle and I thought that it wouldn't be the same. I bought the sample and I realized it was better on Kindle Fire HDX! I read in the sun and there was no glare. Everything about it was perfect. I recommend this to everyone!

An Entertaining ReadI suppose I have read everything Wilbur Smith has ever written and have enjoyed most of it. RIVER GOD was no exception although he has deviated from his usual stories that have Africa as their theme, to Egypt – and ancient Egypt at that in the time of the pharaohs. The story is related through the eyes of a slave, Taita, a brilliant and compassionate man who is the advisor to Queen Lostris. The book contains all the old favourites of Smith’s novels – revenge, bravery, love, and slaughter interspersed with swathes of facts that must have sent his research team into paroxysms of despair. All well worth it as the reader will learn much of the customs and culture of ancient Egypt. An excellent light read although the editor needs a slap on the wrist (I read this on Kindle so I don’t know if that makes a difference) as there were many typos and spelling errors. Words were joined together (no space between them) and this was especially noticeable in the second half. However despite this annoyance, RIVER GOD was a good read and Smith has lived up to his reputation yet again.

If you like historical fiction, you'll love this book!!Very descriptive in detail of events during that time of history. The people come alive and you feel as tho you are there and witnessingthe times and perils. Once you start to read, it's hard to put down.Recommend this book highly!!!

I bought this book in large part because I love historical fiction and when searching for books similar to James Clavell's Asian Saga or Gary Jennings' Aztec, the River God frequently came up. With this in mind, I decided to give Wilbur Smith a try. Undoubtedly, this impacted my view of River God, as I found myself constantly comparing it to other writers. The River God is largely historical inaccurate (Axum was founded over a 1000 years after this book is set, the Bedouin didn't exist, his Author's note at the end is completely bogus, the list goes on) and the Taita is too perfect to sympathize with. However, after I came to accept the River God for what it was, a great story with lots of action and an interesting journey up the Nile, I liked it better. If you want 12 years of historical research like Jennings did in Aztec, try a different writer on Egypt. If you want a great story with some good hunting descriptions and enough history to keep you on Wikipedia fact checking or learning more about Egyptian mythology for hours, River God will suffice.

Detail in an historical novel is like location in business real estate - the ultimate. This is the first in the Egypt series and I missed it. I read The Seventh Scroll and Warlock seven years ago, These books 2 and 3 in the series. What impressed me Andrew me back into the series was the characters, their foibles, strengths, and down right human idiocy on occasion. Taita the eunuch is the glue that binds these books and the dynasty of the Mamose Pharaohs together. Taita's devotion to Queen Lostris, his father like love for the soldier Tanus, and his deep but concealed hatred for Lostris's father, corrupt, power mad Grand Vizer drive the story. Add the scary Hyksos barbarians to the mix. a few tomb tours and Taita;s inquisitive mind matched to his engineering and design skills and the page length is no longer a problem.

If its ancient Egypt, count me in, and Wilbur doesn't disappoint. I picked up this book simply because of the many five stars here on Amazon and it is the very definition of a fast-paced narrative. Can be unbelievable at times, but you won't have any time to be bored. Simply put, the narrator Taita is the most amazing human being ever born, and the supporting characters, though not nearly as awesome, are heads above the rest of us mortals. Wilbur can definitely spin a tale, from the devilish Lord Intef who renders Taita less than a man and causes his own daughter to hate his guts, to Tanus, the god-hero who makes Lostris throw her panties in the air. There is adventure, romance, intrigue, incredible battle scenes, especially the hunting scene with the elephants (amazing), but most importantly there is Taita, whom you might come to hate or love but never can deny his awesomeness.

Second book I've read by Wilbur Smith. Didn't like it as well as the first. Also, he has a penchant for killing animals in disheartening ways. That may be fine for some people, but it's not my cup of tea. Still, he puts together a pretty good story and the writing is fine (but not exceptional).

I first read Wilbur Smith's "Eye of the Tiger" and thought it was a heck of a good read. River God, also by Wilbur Smith will sweep you off your feet! I loved this story, it will stay with me for a long time (probably forever). You'll laugh, cry and thrill to the chase! For anyone interested in ancient Egypt (or antiquity in general), this book is a must. Some readers were put off by the seemingly endless accomplishments by the humble eunuch slave Taita. Let's face it, he had to live by his wits if he was to survive. Today, Taita would be considered a polymath or genius by our standards. Being a eunuch, he is divorced from the drives and desires that keep most men slave to their passions. When reading the ancient historians (i.e., Tacitus, Lucan, Caesar etc.), most aggrandized themselves and their personal roles in history. Just looking at the entire civilization of ancient Egypt you can see how that culture made important contributions to civilization that is with us to this day. The Greeks, Romans and all the great religions owe a big debt to the ancient Eqyptians. A lot of research went in to this story and the probability of the events in the book are very high indeed. In River God, The depecition of politics, greed, lust and the human condition are timeless. To me, the success of a book of this caliber is that it makes you want to read more about the subject matter. Remember this is a work of fiction (the dynastic reign is fictionalized) so sit back, relax and let your imagination soar. When I grow up, I want to be like Taita... Thank you Mr. Smith!p.s., check out Stephen Saylor's books (the Roman Blood series) featuring Gordianus the Finder.

#250,732 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

Excellent book. The combination of REM and SPR instantly and dramatically improved my game. It really does make post flop decisions much easier, particularly for shortish to medium stack. You can adjust as you get into deepstack play. I've always been pretty good at hand reading/ranging, but understanding and using the SPR and REM concepts have me immersed in the game as I play. Don't skip over the fundamental chapters. You'll get a sense of how the authors see them and you may even get reacquainted with a concept or two.Update: I still consider it a must read; but be careful of becoming too predictable (as with any poker book). The game strategy changes over time, but the math still holds. You just need to put in the work, keep learning, and keep up with the evolution of the game.

The ideas in this book are pretty interesting. But, there is about one typo per page. Every time a hand is presented, it will say something like "You are on the blind with and someone raises in front of you." And then you have to look around on the page for a picture of cards and assume that is the hand you're looking for. And then there are hands like 9d94s and you have to guess this means a pair of 9s and you didn't get 3 cards by mistake. In the final section you have 1000 effective stacks with blinds of 100/200 and they refer to this as "fairly deep stacked". You have to go back 20 pages or so to figure out the blinds are actually 2/5. I'm wondering if the printed version has so many errors, or if they just did a completely half assed job of getting it prepped for Kindle. Also, throughout the book the authors constant refrain is "we will give you more information on this in Volume II". Well, here we are in 2014, 7 years later, and there is still no Volume II. They should think about fixing the hundreds of typos in the Kindle version, and coming through with the promised sequel.

Professional No Limit Hold Em is absolutely worth the price of admission. If you are coming from a back ground in limit or tournament play this book will show you what things to think about throughout a hand. It was very enlightening to think through hands I've played in the past in light of the information that I've learned in this book.It should be noted that this book reads easier than, say, a Sklansky book. This is not to say that the information is "easy" or that the book is simple. Just that it reads more conversationally and less like a text book.Who this book is for: anyone with a basic understanding of the mechanics of the game, anyone with a background in limit hold em, anyone with a background in tournament NLHE, anyone who has played NLHE in cash games but wants to improve.Who this is not for: anyone with no understanding of game mechanics, anyone who needs a solid grounding in the basics of NLHEThe book doesn't open with "this is a small/big blind" or "this hand beats that hand". (I'm not bashing books that open with that, they are needed.) If you don't know what hands beat what or what a blind is, or standard "poker speak" you'll need to start elsewhere. This isn't going to to tell you "raise AKo in mid position" it's going to teach you how to evaluate the many conditions of the game at that moment to determine the best course of action for each hand. For example: in a series of example hands they advocate folding AQ and then one or two hands later they have "you" raise with 8-10. "It depends" is the recurring answer for "what do I do...." And the recurring theme of the book is "plan your hand". If you want to learn how to approach the game from the appropriate perspective, this is the book for you. If you want a cookbook that will tell you when to raise with j-10s, you'll want to look elsewhere.

A book that highlights the message "plan-the-hand" for NL play. Sounds simple. In reality it often isn't.The authors take you through the planning proces and give advise that is very helpful, not just in theory but also in the heat of the battle. Key advise is, prior to making a pre-flop bet, to decide on which flops you do want to commit your stack and on which flops you don't, and to estimate for your starting hand the percentages of both types of flops. Subsequently bet/raise pre-flop such that you realise the right stack-to-pot ratio on the flop for the purpose of your planned post-flop play. The authors give practical advise for various classes of starting hands/flop combinations what is the optimal stack-to-pot ratio. Some of the analysis leads to pre-flop betting that - prior to reading the book - I would have classified as over-betting. However, the analysis in the book is sound, and it definitely helps keeping a robust rational approach to the game.

There is better options out there IMO.

Plan of Attack, by Bob Woodward

Amazon.com Review

The 2003 American invasion of Iraq was contentious, not just in the arena of global public opinion, but within the tight-lipped world of the George W. Bush White House. As Bob Woodward reveals in Plan of Attack, Vice-President Dick Cheney and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld were part of a group leading the charge to war while Secretary of State Colin Powell, General Tommy Franks, and others actively questioned the plan to invade a country that had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks while war in Afghanistan was still being waged. Woodward gained extensive access to dozens of key figures and enjoyed hours of direct contact with the President himself (more time, seemingly, than former Bush administration officials Richard Clarke and Paul O'Neill claim to have had). As a result, he's able to cite the kind of gossip you won't find in a White House press release: Franks calls Pentagon official Douglas Feith "the f*cking stupidest guy on the face of the earth," Powell shares his alarm over how the cautious Cheney of the first Bush administration had transformed into a zealot, and Saudi Ambassador Prince Bandar seems to enjoy significantly more entrée and influence than most anyone would have thought. Bush is shown as a man intent on toppling Saddam Hussein in the immediate aftermath of 9/11 and never really wavering in his decision despite offering hints that non-military solutions could be achieved. Light is also shed on CIA director George Tenet, who insists that the evidence that Saddam had weapons of mass destruction was "a slam dunk" only to later admit that his intelligence was flawed when months of post-war searches turned up nothing. But the book's most interesting character is Powell. A former soldier himself, who finds himself increasingly at odds with the agenda of the administration, Powell rejects evidence on WMDs that he sees as spurious but ultimately endorses the invasion effort, apparently out of duty. Upon its publication, the Bush administration roundly denied many of the accounts in the book that demonstrated conflict within their circles, poor judgment, or lousy planning, but the Bush/Cheney reelection campaign nonetheless listed Plan of Attack as recommended reading. And it is. It shows alarming problems in the way the war was conceived and planned, but it also demonstrates the tremendous conviction and dedication of the people who decided to carry it out. --John Moe

From Publishers Weekly

Based on exhaustive research and remarkable access to the White House, including two sessions with President Bush and more than 75 interviews with administration officials, veteran Washington Post assistant managing editor Woodward delivers an engrossing blow-by-blow of the run-up to war in Iraq. In November 2001, just months after September 11, Woodward reports, Bush pulled aside defense secretary Donald Rumsfeld and asked him to secretly begin updating war plans for Iraq. Sixteen months later, in March 2003, after an intense war-planning effort, a tense political fight at home and a carefully crafted "if-you-donÂ’t-we-will" diplomatic strategy with the U.N., the American invasion began. Woodward has penned a forceful, often disturbing narrative that captures the deep personality and policy clashes within the Bush administration. Bush, along with Dick Cheney, Condoleezza Rice, Karl Rove and Paul Wolfowitz, are portrayed as believing in a sweeping mission to export democracy and to have America be viewed as strong and willing to walk the walk. They are counterbalanced by Colin Powell, who emerges here as a reluctant warrior, a pragmatic voice—eventually muted—cautioning the president against a rush to war. The most stunning aspect of the story, however, is the glaring intelligence failure of George TenetÂ’s CIA, from bad WMD information to what Woodward reports as the outright manipulation of questionable intelligence to make the case for war. With this book, Woodward, the author of an astonishing nine number-one bestsellers, has delivered his most important and impressive work in years. Ultimately, this first-class work of contemporary history will be remembered for shedding needed light on the Iraq War, whatever its final outcome. Bob Woodward's book on the decision to go to war which was made by the President and his closest advisors is a very easy to read book on a very hard topic.Woodward as always has impeccable sources, he speaks with not only George W Bush, but the main players in the Government as well, both on the record and off. The result is a book that is not bogged down in tremendous detail but comprehensive enough to be a strong starting point for anyone who wishes to research the topic matter further. To be able to write in a clear and concise style while also adding tidbits of information on the protagonists along the way is one of Woodward's strongest assets. I find his books to be remarkable pieces of journalism that do come off as very even handed, he is fair to the parties and lets the reader make up their own mind on what sounds true and what sounds sometimes self-serving on the part of some of the interviewees.

Woodward's account generally is an engrossing and informative read. I expected the book to be much more negative about the Administrations' actions before, during, and after the war, but that wasn't the case. The book is based largely on interviews by those who've remained very loyal to the cause. The interviews that are particularly interesting are those with Powell and Armitrage and those with others when the topic is Powell. It also appears that William Cohen provided some interesting information about the workings of the Administration. But, you hear much from Bush about "what a president" must do, which gets very tiresome. The book was decidedly anti-French as it adopted the Administration's view that the French were against the war because of French commerical interests in Iraq and because the French are pacifists. Woodward never mentions that 85% of the French population was against the war (this war is for DEMOCRACY, isn't it?) and that the French may have really felt as Powell that there were better ways to deal with Saddam than invading Iraq. But, instead Woodward just accepts the possible French bias as true. Conversely, Woodward accepts Bush rationale for war without addressing similar conflicts of interest that the Administration may have had -- Cheney's commerical interest in Haliburton and Bush's oil buddies' desire for Iraqi oil. In reality, both the Bush Administration and the French government may very well have had principled stands and the author should have at least approached both on an equal basis. You learn inside information about the reasons for war, but the book left me a bit frustrated because I felt the interviewees did plenty of post-conflict rationalizing of pre-conflict acts. But, I must admit that the book was hard to put down.

Bob Woodward is one of the finest investigative journalists of our time. With his unusually broad access to inside sources on all sides of the political arena, he provides information, insights and source perspectives that most other authors, "Sunday Talking Heads" and political hacks (Hannity, Limbaugh, Beck, Pelosi, etc...) can't. Bob's not afraid to look at all factors of an equation, and calls Bush to task just as easily as Obama. I've read everything written by Woodward over the past 6 years, and have yet to be disappointed. He's unbiased. He's detailed. He's a true patriot, in that he cares about what's best for the country, not any particular party. Happy Reading!

Some two years after the US invasion of Iraq and the failure to find any WMD's President Bush "admitted" that the intel(-ligence) was faulty. In early January 2001 before Bush was inaugurated as President of the United States, Vice President-elect Dick Cheney passed a message to then Secretary of Defense William Cohen asking that Bush be briefed on matters of national security. Topic A should be Iraq, specified Cheney. During the briefing Bush was more interested in the peppermints on the table than what was said, Cheney nodded off, and Rumsfeld kept asking the speakers to speak louder. After the briefing Cohen believed that the new administration would see that there was not much support in the Near East for an attack on Iraq.A few days later (still in January of 2001) Bush received a second briefing from George Tenet, Director of the CIA, and his deputy James Pavitt. Tenet and Pavitt agreed that there were three major threats to the United States. Number One was Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda. Second was WMD's. Third was China. Iraq was barely mentioned.72 days after 9-11, President Bush clamped his arm on Rumsfeld and said," I need to see you." The arm clamping was a gesture between close friends. Before Rumsfeld became Secretary of Defense, he was interviewed by Bush. Rumsfeld characterized the defensive posture of the Clinton Administration as "reflexive pullback" (Rumsfeld did not have Bosnia in mind) whereas Rumsfeld believed that the new Bush administration should be "forward-leaning." 72 days after 9-11 Bush wanted to know what kind of plans the Secretary of Defense could muster for an attack on Iraq. The "intellectual" godfather of regime change in Iraq was Paul Wolfowitz. Wolfowitz proposed the enclave strategy. Wolfowitz believed that the US could send troops into southern Iraq andseize some 1000 oil wells, about two-thirds of all of Iraq's production. From this enclave, support would be given to forces opposing Saddam Hussein. Colin Powell thought Wolfowitz was talking as if 25 million Iraqis would rush to opposeHussein. "This is lunacy," Powell said.On 9-11 some 3000 Americans died. That very same day Rumsfeld raised the question with his staff the possibility of "going after Iraq as a response to the terrorist attacks." The next day, in the inner circle of Bush's war cabinet, Rumsfeld asked if the attacks did not present an "opportunity" to attack Iraq. In an interview a year later, Bush said that Rumsfeld was wise for trying to show that the war of terror was global. But at that time, it had not been shown that there was _no_ collaborative relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda. That is, it had not been shown to the American public. Since that time it has been shown to the American public that there was no collaborative relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda, that there were no WMD's, and that the CIA tried to tell this to the Bush administration six months before the US invasion. By then it did not matter. By then it did not matter what the intel found; it was all about regime change. Bush's centerpiece of his "war" on terror never was about 9-11; it was about regime change.

Review

“D'Erasmo manages to teach, model, and argue many essential truths about intimacy within the slim volume, making The Art of Intimacy a perfect go-to resource for any writer, teacher, or thoughtful reader who wants line-level references to apt 20th- and 21st- century literature that represent intimacy in its kaleidoscopic diversity.” ―Los Angeles Review of Books“D'Erasmo digs deep into the nuances of literature in order to find the hidden glue that links lovers, family, friends and enemies to each other and to the reader. . . . Readers and writers will gain a deeper appreciation for the lyric need for that which is left unsaid, like the pause in a piece of music which defines the notes around it.” ―Shelf Awareness“A profound meditation on the relationships between fictional characters, the possibility and meaning of intimacy in fiction, and most vitally, an exploration by a master writer of how authors create relationships between readers and their stories. . . . An invaluable text for the writing classroom. . . . Buy this indispensable book.” ―The Rumpus“Provides powerful insight . . . as D'Erasmo proved throughout, intimacy is often the result of what isn't said, of what needn't be said, of a closeness the readers feel but don't see.” ―Los Angeles Review“The word intimacy evokes images of love, but the book also delves into the darker side of the subject: obsession. . . . D'Erasmo provides a lucid and provocative examination of the ill-defined concept of intimacy.” ―Publishers Weekly

[This book will not tell you how to write intimate scenes, nor instruct you on what is a "successful" rendering of intimacy and what is not...Instead, we will venture together into a few of the meeting places, the spaces between, that have occurred in fiction."] pg. 12I would say this book is trying to cover a "high concept writing approach", when exploring relationships between people. The examples offer methaphors and simlies on the complexity of human relationships in a way that can easily make any writer look like an amatuer. To pull it off sucessfully and not look completely pompous would be a real achievement. I was annoyed by the overuse of the word "Subjunctive", which I looked up on different sources only to find that it remained elusively undefined. The book still offers interesting food for thought though and I'm glad I read it. The case is made that we can never truly know a character/person without their personal narrative, but we can learn a lot about the character narrating, by the way they view their relationship with that other character. If you like to read/write straight forward stories this book will probably annoy you. If you like to delve deep into philosophical questions and the human psyche at large, this book is perfect for you. I, myself, am somewhere in between.

A useful book for working writers, though I found it somewhat more elliptical than Charles Baxter's "The Art of Subtext" from the same series (of which he is the editor). A bit harder to distill craft guidance from this one, though I enjoyed her voice and perspective in many ways and would certainly recommend the book.

A really thoughtful essay on intimacy in fiction though a bit dismissive of work not as "advanced" as her world view.

This entry into the Art of ... series blows away other more shallow attempts at thinking about writing. The allegedly "two" bad reviews on this site are identical, word for word, from the same person, who ironically criticizes the editors of On Intimacy for missing a repeated paragraph. By doubling the count of that one comment, the site misrates the enjoyment history of the readers of this elegant look at imtimacy. This slim volume epitomizes the experience Rilke describes, of loving the space between us that allows us to enjoy the silhouette of each other against the sky.

Stacey d'Erasmo's book, The Art of Intimacy: The Space Between is a beautifully written and skillfully rendered meditation of what intimacy means in fiction. The study's subtitle is taken from a quote from Gertrude Stein, and reveals this book's focus: The text seeks to explore how we can explore that space between people, between reader and writer, and between book and reader, and how these borders blur and intersect. The entire "Art of" series from Graywolf is a lovely and lasting contribution to our thinking on writing, and d'Erasmo's contribution is a really important addition to this series.

I, like I believe most people read books for two reasons. 1. for entertainment and 2. to learn something. This book did neither. It was also poorly edited. There was an entire paragraph repeated back to back, what is that? I am leery of choosing any more books from this series as well. What were you thinking???? And at that price; that is a ridiculous price for this book!!
