Review

"Like a harrowing Thousand and One Arabian Nights, Prisoner of Tehran is the story of Marina Nemat -- her unvarnished courage, her intrepid wisdom, her fight to save her integrity and her family in a world in which to be female is to be chattel. Written with the deft hands of a novelist, it is the portrait of a world only too real, where women's lives are cheap -- but not this one." -- Jacquelyn Mitchard, author of The Deep End of the Ocean and Cage of Stars"An Important Eyewitness Account..." -- Kirkus Review"Nemat's engaging memoir is rich with complex characters...[she] offers her arresting, heartbreaking story of forgiveness, hope and enduring love -- a voice for the untold scores silenced by Iran's revolution." -- Starred Pw

This is a vivid description of how a normal teenager's life was overturned by the Islamic revolution in Iran. The descriptions are vivid and make it easy to picture how, before the revolution, Marina's concerns were her grades, her social life, swimming, clothes, minor conflicts with her parents...a life similar to that of the average American teenager. Like many American teens, she went to church and had an active prayer life. Not super holy, but a pretty good kid. The title gives away that she went from that life to prison, misery and choices no teenager should have to face.I followed the revolution in Iran in the news back when it was happening, but never could imagine how horrible things got for the average person there. I have an Iranian friend who fled Iran with nothing more than her husband, her daughter, and a couple of suitcases, leaving house and bank accounts behind. They are Zoroastrian, and they felt that they had no future in Iran. Although they had to start over in the United States with nothing, they are now doing much better than they would have been had they stayed.Although most Iranians were better off under the Shah, Marina doesn't gloss over the abuses carried out under his dictatorship. She doesn't paint Muslims as all bad. There were Iranian Muslims who were tolerant of the Zoroastrians, Christians, Jews, and atheists living in their country. Unfortunately, these moderates were not the people who ended up in power. Marina's book illustrates clearly the suffering that can result from a government based on a religion. I am grateful for the First Amendment and hope this book will inspire everyone who reads it to be diligent in guarding against encroachments against religious freedom.

The term good would not do justice to my opinions of this book. This is not to say that I agree with all of the author's opinions on all matters, but this well-written account of faith, suffering, and the price of totalitarianism is on the whole superb. Marina is thankfully a talented written and usully manages to keep even the more mundane aspects of growing up in Iran during the Shah's reign interesting. Essentially the story of her arrest, imprisonment, interrogation (with torture in at least one instance), near execution, and an essentially forced relationship with a guard is alternated with her childhood and experience of the 1979 Revolution. The interrogator Ali Moosavi is a fascinating character in the book. In some ways he is one of the most sinister characters but deep down he has numerous good qualities. Marina confesses that she very understandably still doesn't know how to feel for this man who combined ruthlessness with idealism. From one angle he cruelly convinced her to temporarily betray her Christian faith and slept with her against her will. On the other side he twice saved her life including the second time as his final actions on earth. He seemed to have the potential to change right at the moment when he himself became the victim of the regime he had once suffered and fought for(he not only fought the Iraqis but had himself been tortured earlier by the Shah's men). Despite all the pain and suffering from totalitarianism and war, Nemat herself retains a dignified humility and care for other human beings and thankfully does have a relatively happy ending in the book by emmigrating to Canada with her husband and children. The book also features an interview with the author that is rather interesting. If there is one criticism of the book it is that I wish the author had focused more on the return to her Christian faith and how her experiences had worked to shape her beliefs. This is discussed some but I felt there may have been so much more which could have been contemplated here.overall, i highly recommend the book.P.S.This work does bring up a number of issues. First of all Marina Nemat was faced with criticism from a number of former political prisoners about some details of the book. I can't of course know every single detail in the work was accurate; the author herself admits that time has obscurred some details. It is also worth mentioning that other former iranian political prisoners responded to the attacks by supporting Nemat.on a larger scale the book should bring to mind three important realities.1. Political oppression and torture still occurs in Iran though argueably not to the level as under Khomenini (less mass executions anyway).2. Christian minorities (and other religious minorities) suffer oppression and persecution in vast swathes of the Middle East. This often violent persecution in of course not limited to iran but also includes U.S. allies such as Saudi Arabia which is in truth even worse than the Iranians in some respects.3. There are a surprising number of torture victims living in the West from a whole range of countries. Before writing the book, Nemat worked at a Swiss Chalet restaurant and was living a middle class Canadian life with her husband and children. In short, this reality should give us some pause about the possible experiences of others we may run into. Sometimes it is the most seemingly normal of people who have lived through the nightmare of totalitarianism (whether religious or atheistic or neither).

The world is full of examples of phoenixes rising from the ashes, but we rarely know of these hidden heroes who have faced hardship beyond imagining and survived. It is in the hearing of such stories that we begin to understand the common tendency of human beings, bent on a "heroic", subtle revenge that is easily portrayed as "fixing the system", to perpetrate violence, condone personal vendettas, and continue the cycle of unforgiveness.Nemat's story is just one of many--women who have learned throughout time the destructive mentalities of political systems used to control people--control driven by fear clothed in religious fervor. What makes this story all the more surprising is the age of these political prisoners...mere children! This generation--from abortion to Africa's childrens armies to Nemat's schoolmates--paints a devastating portrait of what we have created in the minds of our people. The vulnerable are now our manipulated, our murdered, our punching bags for the frustrations of our lives. No matter how progressed we think we have become, indeed we have only become worse. Worse because we deny, worse because we have learned to call bad good and good bad, worse because indeed we no longer know what good is at all.

I am really torn about whether I like this book or not. I'm really leaning more towards loving it than hating it, but I wanted to lay both sides out in my review. What I love:Everything in this book is spot on. The message is biblical, sound, and everything I needed to hear.Chapters 5-10 gave specific examples for how to handle all sorts of different situations with both younger and older boys. This was the most helpful part of the book for me. And I will probably reference it again and again. What I didn't love:How could I not love a book that was spot on and just what I needed? It was mainly the writing style. I felt like the author was talking down to moms as if we couldn't understand the need of our sons to be respected. Which was in fact the entire reason I wanted to read this book. I knew my boys needed respect, I just don't always know how to flesh it out. After reading just two chapters of this book I was ready to toss it out. I remember telling my husband that for an author who made such great points, he didn't know much about communicating. I felt put down. Some of the ways he recommended using "respect-talk" towards our sons would have had my 13-year old thinking I was mocking him. However, after pressing on, it got much, much better. The other thing I didn't really care for was all of the success stories. I get that his system works and he knows what he's talking about, but I really felt like the first 4 chapters (and maybe the last 4) were mainly stories of how awesome the respect effect is, but not really helpful to the reader.Bottom line:If you have read books by Emerson Eggerichs before and enjoyed them, I would highly recommend this one.If you haven't read any of his books before, I would still recommend reading this book, but if you are put off by the beginning, maybe start at chapter 5. It's totally worth it.

Your book is an answer to prayer! I am a single mom that adopted a sibling group. I have two boys, ages 11 and 8, and their 6 year old sister. They have been with me for almost 7 years. My oldest son remembers the abuse and neglect he experienced with his bio mom and struggles with issues related to love and trust, much less respect. The issues discussed in your book have revolutionized how I related to both of my boys as well as how I now demand their sister to treat them.I listened to your book in the car to and from work, approximately an hour drive each way. Before I left work one day when I was halfway through your book, I checked by 6th grade son's grades. I noticed he had a 65% in math, a subject he enjoys, as a result of 2 zeros. I was livid and knew exactly what barrage of anger I would unleash on him when I got home. During the hour drive in which I processed your words about respect talk, I was able to completely change my approach. When I got home, I told my son that I respect his intelligence and ability in math. I was able to use respect talk to instruct, discipline, and encourage him. He respectfully responded that he would take care of the problem. No yelling, no tears, no regret! He turned in both assignments the next day and the grade became a 95%. I shared how proud I was of him for taking care of this and being a man of honor.Another quick story: The day I finished your book, I was telling my neighbor (she has a 7 year old son) about how great your book is while we were outside watching our kids play ball. My 8 year old son walked up to me and said, "I don't feel respected when 'my sister' takes the ball from me. Can you talk to her?" I asked my daughter if she was being respectful to her brother and she said no. She apologized to my son and promised to be respectful as they played. He said, "Thank you, you are a good sister." My neighbor's jaw dropped as she watched this interaction play out. I am telling you the truth, it happened just like that. My neighbor said,"I am buying this book tonight!"Thank you so much for answering the call God placed on your heart to write this book. As a single mom, I am so happy to have a "how to" guide on how to raise my sons as I try to teach them about THE SON. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!

Our 25 yr. old son recently moved back home after job loss and change of career path. We had always had great relationship, but suddenly I was the enemy. This book was a true God send at a time when I was at a complete loss. It has helped diffuse a difficult circumstance just by way I approach him. I highly recommend for all ages. It's a process to rewire your language but I'm working on it. It works.

As I have watched so many sons become distant with their moms in adulthood, I felt a need to see if that could be changed with my own son. We have a great relationship, but as he enters his teen years I wanted to continue that as best I could. I became aware of the book bascially by chance while listening to another podcast. Having heard the author before and having read some of his materials I knew that respect is necessary for most men. However, I had not ever thought of the "man inside the boy." I feel like I alreay do many of these actions, but without the vocabulary. This book gives lots of examples with sample scripts and ideas. It is a quick simple read. I find that in all reality the respect in discplining and guiding boys will also be effective for the females in your life. I would recommend this book for parents of toddlers all the way to adulthood. If your relationship with your adult son is strained it can help you improve it even though it may take a great deal of time. If your son is young, start early. Better to build the man from the start than to rebuld him if he feels torn down.

This book taught me so much! In the beginning you think you are in the twighlight zone because it works so well. If anything I took from this book what I wanted to use in my parenting and its a great resource if you are confused about your relationship with your son. Since I became a parent I was always very hands on but I have learned that i have to let my son have room to grow into his manhood by encouraging him to be an honorable young man. Also there are some lessons that he has to experience on his own, as his mom I cant kiss his hurt away nor does he want me to.

First book was a fun romp with likeable characters and good action. But in this book I found the MC's constant pop culture references extremely cringy and frankly too much. Almost as bad as Harmon Cooper's painful to read Cherry Blossom Girls. I normally finish a book in one sitting. This one took me struggling through it over three days which is pretty bad in my scale of good to bad books. However I still finished it and it is satisfactory enough that I'd buy the next book if there is one. The plot is decent after all. I just hope the author tones down on the pop culture references HARD.

This sequel is just as good as the first book, if not better. I love the sheer detail in the battle scenes, the pop culture references, and of course all the different types of aliens. This book takes you past a galaxy far far away and into alien gladiator fights with just the right amount of silliness from the protagonist to keep things light and fun, not to mention to take a break from all the seriousness. I love the main character's way of using humor in the face of danger. So if you want to blast off into one of the best Science Fiction stories I've ever read, I would highly recommend Arena 2. Can't wait for the next book.

Logan Jacobs does it again! Arena 2 starts off where the last book left off, and that's with a bang! (Or more precisely a kick) This book has all the same fun jokes as the first book, however the action has taken another step forward. Everything about this story is entertaining and action packed, every page feels like a cliche blockbuster movie and I keep coming back for more!In all, Logan Jacobs has created a fun, action/comedic atmosphere with in-depth characters and awesome development. This story deserves more than five stars! I can't wait till the next addition. Thankfully Jacobs punches stories out like a machine and I won't have to wait long.5 out of 5 I would recommend!

Book two had the same humor and vibe as the first book, but it just didn't stand out much to me; there were few surprises and many times where you "saw that coming." I remember what happened in the story, but overall, meh.The writing is good, grammar is great, not many errors that I saw, and the characters are pretty well written (usually).I'll certainly read the next in the series to see where we end up and how a few plot threads turn out.

This is not a bad book, in fact, it's a great book, taking the story from the first and expanding it and moving things forward, but only in regards to the main story line of life and advancement within the Crucible of Carnage. This is where my main letdown arrives. Some relationships expand outside of the context of what goes on in the Crucible, others i feel are left to stagnate, while new characters are advanced ahead beyond those introduced in the prior installment. There are hints of things that could occur, but they never do.The feast before battle being a prime example, especially after the prior events which ruined a promising date night. I will definitely keep reading because i love the shtick, irreverent humor and Artemis' ability to botch every common expression in spectacular fashion. That said... more relationship development in book 3, please.

What a great follow-up to the first book! More snappy pop culture references, more evil aliens, more beautiful team mates. After the amazing start with Arena Book 1 I was a bit concerned that any sequel wouldn't be able to live up to the standard, but I was wrong. I can't wait for Arena Book 3 now.

Wow book two is even better than the first. I just love the way the main characters interact with one another. It just makes the book so much fun to read. I can’t wait for the next book to come out. I highly recommend this book.

At it's base its still a story about a guy who is in way over his head just trying to survive and even as more characters are added to the cast that doesn't change but at the same time they aren't bland they have personality! With that said this is a great addition to this series!
