Since I knew I was reading a ghost story, I quickly suspected that Sissy was the ghost. But the author still kept me engrossed waiting to find out how she became a ghost and if she'd been truly murdered by Ali's Aunt and Mother, or had it been an accident. Most of the time I was annoyed by Sissy's behavior, but I sympathized and sort of liked her by the end of the book. I really liked how history repeated itself with the canoe, but luckily, it turned out okay. The setting was mostly dark, rainy, and chilling, which was a perfect setting for the creepiness the author wove. My only disappoinment was that Ali's Aunt and Mother never saw Sissy, not even in the end.

I read books I am giving our grandchildren to make sure they are appropriate. Mary Downing Hahn is one of our granddaughters' favorite authors and this is one of three I've read in the past week and they all were dark, stark and stressful until the very end of the book. By then, it felt like the author could not adequately redeem the plot. I suppose we compare everything to Harry Potter now and nothing seems to measure up. You just don't get connected to and captivated by these characters.

I loved the entire book and nothing was bad. I recommend this book to readers who love ghost stories or people who have lots of emotion. I think it deserved 5/5 stars because it was sad and scary at the same time, it was VERY HARD to put the book down.

I have read this book with many 8th graders. Cool story. Easy read. Will be a hit with most teens! Highly recommend!

I have grown to LOVE Mary Downing Hahn's books, but this was a miss for me, which was disappointing. The story was slow and at times, I wasn't even sure if I even wanted to finish it. Still love this author, but I didn't enjoy this book.

I was reading this book with my 12-year-old granddaughter. We were both drawn into the book because we were trying to figure out just who this "Sissy" character/person was. One night after reading several chapters together, I fell asleep. The next morning I was surprised that my granddaughter read on ahead because she just couldn't stop reading! Now that's my idea of a good book!!!!

This was a Christmas gift received before Christmas and the recipient loved the book. It was read in one sitting.

Bought this book to get some motivation every day. Although there were some good quotes in there, I want a little more than just quotes. Many of the quotes that I've seen in this book is very common quotes from famous people.

There is a severe lacking of representation in this book. You will only find 5 quotes attributed to women in the first 20 pages (50 quotes). Thatâ€™s 5 out of 50 are given to women. The rest of the collection keeps about this pace. Besides the lack of gender representation, the collection as a whole is just meh. The author likes to quote himself in the book and that seems weird. Itâ€™s like citing yourself in your own disertation.

I like that this book is not as tiny as some of the other inspirational sayings books. Itâ€™s a decent size and has some good sayings. Some are typical sayings that are online but itâ€™s nice having them all condensed and accessible. Using these for an office gift for several people.

The book came and I read it in two sittings... Mesmerized by Manal's bravery and determination to push for reforms for all women of Saudi Arabia. I was surprised that she was so religiously fanatical in her youth -- she fought against those who longed for freedoms, and later was a leader for those same freedoms she once scorned! What a perilous path she took and of course, most freedom fighters sacrifice much they love in order to gain freedoms... I must say here that Manal's brother was a hero alongside side his heroine sister's side. He is to be commended.Although Manal felt she must flee Saudi Arabia, I earnestly believe that with the second generation of Al-Saud's that the kingdom is moving toward freedom for women. Since I lived in Saudi Arabia for 12 years, from 1978-1990, I have always been aware that social change in the kingdom would be slow, but it seems that the day is coming when these issues will be solved. That is my hope for all people in the kingdom, and most especially for the women and the men who speak out on their behalf.This is a book that I hope will be read by everyone and will be required reading all over the world.

I heard Manal speak on NPR and she was very professional, interesting and forgiving to those who have caused her great pain. I bought the book to support women in Saudi Arabia achieving independence. Manal's story was interesting, painful but hopeful as well. It's amazing what she has been able to accomplish given her background and culture. She made some mistakes in her life but was able to keep moving forward...growing and evolving. She's faced adversity with grace and courage. I wish her the best and hope the culture changes in Saudi Arabia and other countries so that women have the same rights as men and can overcome the bias against them. Being female should not be a liability!

Every single line is filled with information and details telling a real story of a smart, driven and brave woman. Everyone should read this because we should support people who want a better life for women, the book is really fun to read and there is an amazing story telling how life is for women in Saudi Arabia.

This book is a beautifully told story--a sad and infuriating and informative story told in a page-turning way.. It gave me a much clearer sense of what life is like for women in Saudi Arabia, as well as a great admiration for the courage and determination of Manal al-Sharif and others who have taken up the fight for women's rights. My book group voted to read it, and we'll be discussing it in a few weeks.

This narrative is a very interesting account of the activism of a Saudi Arabian woman and her quest to acquire the freedom for women to drive in her country. As an American who prizes her freedom and independence, the suppression of women in Saudi is hard to imagine, aside from being angering. The challenging pursuit of the author for women's freedom makes for very moving reading. Definitely a learning experience!

Gives great insight into what it was/is like to grow up and live in Saudi Arabia as a female. A little dry at points but demonstrates that this Saudi woman seemed to suffer a variety of Stockholm syndrome- she bought into the extreme version of Islam that pervaded Mecca during her childhood. A great read right now as another woman was detained this week for wearing a short skirt and crop top.

It's interesting to read about the inequalities which still exist between males and females in the Middle East. It makes me more and more thankful I was born in the USA. It's a shame how women are treated in Saudi Arabia in the name of Islam which is not reflections of the teachings from the Koran.

This book gives great insight to the conditions of women in Saudi Arabia. To the outside world all Saudis are rich from oil revenues and live lives of privilege. Very few have written books to tell it like it really is. It is a closed society that does not want its flaws exposed. This is an excellent book that opened my eyes. It is such a long, long hard struggle for women to be accepted as worthy of equal respect around the planet although women make up 50% of the population and I applaud Manal for her courage and activism.

I am not satisfied with the book. The link to download the code depot scripts doesnt work. The diagrams cannot be read, its blurry.I tried to follow up with Rampant publisher company about the link, the support team are not aware of it. This is a fantastic book if you are a WebLogic administrator or a developer on the Oracle FMW platform. Compared to the somewhat sparse Oracle documentation on WLST it's like being handed the manual for an Ikea flatpack; after having spend dozens of hours fiddling with screws and rebuilding.Little time is spend on generic Jython and WebLogic topics, true to the word "advaned" the author dives in after just a glance. The content of this book can then be split into three parts; WLST, JMX and a smaller chapter on other automation related topics. The real gold is in the examples - they are all working and written as standalone functions. it's obvious that the writer has run into many (if not all) of the obstacles WLS administrators run into sooner or later. Monitor a queue and start a shell script on rising numbers? There's an example on that. Developers screaming for automation of domain creation or scripted deployments, including data sources? It's there. You find that in a basic setup the standard out log is filling up the drive? It's hidden, but in the book. You need to import user accounts into WebLogic every night? Needs some hammering, but it's there. Although the author does not explicitly list all of the functions, no WLST (and partly JMX) command is left without a small example.A drawback: when setting up server automation you would probably choose WLST and only in some cases JMX. Either way, half of the book would be of little use to you. The topics in the book on both technologies are so similar that going from one to the other feels like rereading it with all of the examples written in another programming language. Also, maybe not a drawback, but that's a lot of examples. This is not light reading (unless you enjoy reading code).To summarize: it's a great book if you've got programming experience or are experienced with WLST or Java and need to script or automate aspects of WebLogic and a great reference to have around besides.

As someone who was subjected to a husband who was a professional liar, I can say I truly appreciated the author's candor and willingness to appear "foolish." It's always easy to look in on something from the outside and make judgements, but from the inside the view is different. Her story paints her as REALLY ignorant and/or naive. That said, people like her so-called husband, are experts at creating environments where the victim doubts themselves and because outsiders often see through the rouse, the victim also become alienated. I appreciate her honestly with her story and I think it is not only interesting, but also, of real value to society as a whole. I certainly recommend her memoir and I am happy she felt compelled to share her story. Congratulations to the author on moving on with her life and the lives of her children. I wish you the very best.

THE BIGAMIST by Mary Turner Thomson is a fascinating first-hand account of a young, single mother who is courted by and married to what can only be labeled as a catfishing sociopath. Not only does this man have no conscience, uses classic gaslighting and isolation techniques of a narcissist, but also manages to drain her bank accounts and incurr tremendous debt in the process.Therefore, it is no big surprise that the story then ends up also being a tale of bigamy. Sort of like an ice cream sundae with nuts and a cherry on top, except decidedly less appealing and unenjoyable.Yet, Thomson somehow shows great strength of character and tenacity by not only surviving but thriving from this encounter.Most of the book's focus tells the tale of Thomson's online meeting of a man named William Allen Jordan. What then ensues is a wild-toad-ride-like courtship and marriage over a six year period filled with lots of grand drama, tall tales, and repeated disappearing acts.Once she learns there's another wife, Thomson then researches and lays out details of Jordan's life beginning in his teen years to the present.Sadly, the sociopathic patterns are all too evident from an early age, and the picture that ultimately emerges is simply astounding. Sociopaths, generally speaking, are quite grandiose. Even though Jordan gives the appearance of a humble man, he is boldly audacious with his lies and manipulations.Yet, ultimately this is a book about hope for survivors of this type of abuse, because Thomson doesn't spend her time wallowing in her pain. She faces the truth and resulting pain, grieves the loss, and finds a way to move forward with her three children--two of whom are Jordan's biological kids.Kudos to Thomson for risking the emotional exposure to go public. It has taken a great deal of courage. Many others suffering from close and personal contact with a sociopath can both learn from her experience, as well as her cautionary comments at book's end.

I too am a victim of marrying a bigamist. It's easy to judge when your not in the victims seat. I found this story fastenating. I am proud of this woman for picking up the pieces of her life and focusing on healing her family. My bigamist left a wife after she was in a terrible car accident. She was terribly injured and had to have her leg amputated. She and was left abandoned with three children. Of course, this is my story. You will love this woman's story and will be left in amazement unable to put it down.

This was an interesting book to read but rather slow at times. I had hope she would not have gone so much into details about him and the various lies he used to manipulate her and instead giving more details about how her family felt after coming to know him. Did their inner voice say, 'Run! As fast as you can. Get away from this man! Perhaps investigate more about some of the stories she was being told, etc. I am so sorry she had to go thru such a horrible experience and thrilled she is such a strong woman and her children are ok!

Bigamy is not a mainstream topic, but it is one that is worth examining. And, how brave the author is to share her story! Initially, the reader wonders how victims (and there were many) could be so naive, but as the book progresses, itâ€™s obvious the sociopath bigamist is very good at mind control, twisting facts, and manipulating and molding people to fit his needs. I couldnâ€™t put the book down.

OMG!! I canâ€™t begin to tell you how phenomenal this book is. This lady endured soooo much in the 6 years of hell she lived in this Faust of a marriage. Itâ€™s horrific and terrifying to know people like him exist in this world. I highly recommend reading this ladyâ€™s account of the madness she lived and how she has triumphed to become the strong, gifted and remarkable woman she is today.

The story of this woman who during six long years was cheated and left penniless by her bigamist husband is nothing less than a horror story. Although we all know that love is blind, the fact that she kept selling all her posessions to fund the bigamist secret life leaves us pondering in life mysteries. The book is well written, but perhaps would benefit from including less story details and more reflections on what is going on. All in all it is a good description of the psychopath next door.

It's frightening to see how easily these men trap women in their web of deceit. I was duped (but fortunately refused to marry) a similar fellow. I lost a lot of money, but more importantly my self-respect at the hands of a slick-talker like Will/Bill. If you are in a marriage with a man who disappears (especially on holidays) and offers over-the-top reasons for his actions, pls read this book.

I review high technology patent applications at payroy dot com in very complex and diverse areas including biotech, circuits, algorithms, medical devices, software, gadgets, physics, chemistry, etc.There are many books out today on "do it yourself" patenting, and they generally fall into three categories: 1. Professional titles like this one, but that focus on judicial review, the Federal Circuit's process and latest decisions, bouncing between district and circuit, etc. These books run anywhere from $400 to thousands. LexisNexis buys out the best ones (as they just did with all the Oxford IP titles), and charges more thousands for subscription searches. 2. The inexpensive and frankly dangerous books that suggest you can do it all yourself, with varying degrees of useful and useless tips. The search sections of these books are generally, to be honest, a joke. 3. The VERY RARE book like this one, that specializes in the most key areas of drafting (prior art and detailed technology and claim searches), and is just as professional and thorough as the most expensive ones, yet is very reasonably priced for the amount of details given as well as the currency and relevance of the resources.There are two "must buy" features for this edition-- a. Like '09, it strikes an amazing and unusual balance between beginners and very advanced users. It is, surprisingly, of great value to both sophisticated, experienced searchers, and brand new inventors who have never tried a single search. b. Unlike, or more accurately updating 5 years ago, has MANY more very current and relevant online resources, steps, ideas, tricks, tips and practical advice, with online now "coming of age" even when you don't have access to Lexis.You can save many hundreds, and perhaps thousands, of dollars on the open vs. pay switches and services with this volume. It won't (and shouldn't!) save you ALL attorney's fees, but this new edition will help you right off the shelf to know if you should even invest, or, even better, help you refine your submission with many more related references, schematics, descriptions, etc. to "tack" your sail off of.The Federal Circuit has found, time and again, that despite and regardless of their attorney's generality claims, inventors themselves do the most "damage" in limiting their own scope, because that's what we do as inventors! The subtle value of this volume isn't just "go or no go" in terms of other schematics and claim structures, it is doing FAR MORE EXHAUSTIVE SEARCHES to REALLY see where your idea fits. The more you know about what's out there, the better you'll be positioned at every stage of your design, draft and submission. Search is probably the most important aspect of drafting, and schematics, though a close second, also are closely related to, and dependent on, search ability and quality.There is one REALLY BIG complaint I do have about this book: The more people who find out about it, the less business I will have, because although it doesn't obviate the need for a good IP attorney, it WILL save you a lot of money in dealing (or not!) with search service providers and paid switches! There are just TOO MANY trade secrets given away here for too good a price-- pun intended! The author knows and details how far advanced the web has become now with data mining, string searches, context sensitive tags, spiders, feed bots, intelligent agents, etc. It is light years from where it was even 5 years ago in the patent domain, so this edition is timely indeed.Whether you're an inventor, scientist, IP attorney, or search service provider like me, this new edition is a must have... highly recommended. I liked the last edition, but sincerely, this is MUCH more up to date, as there are agents, feeds, technologies and services that didn't even exist in '09, and from a must/should/nice view, this text and the web are more musts than the expensive paid services and subscriptions, which are becoming optional, or in some cases, not even needed. Even so, Hitchcock details every one of them, free AND paid.Library Picks reviews only for the benefit of Amazon shoppers and has nothing to do with Amazon, the authors, manufacturers or publishers of the items we review. We always buy the items we review for the sake of objectivity, and although we search for gems, are not shy about trashing an item if it's a waste of time or money for Amazon shoppers. If the reviewer identifies herself, her job or her field, it is only as a point of reference to help you gauge the background and any biases.

As an attorney and professional searcher, this book is worthless. Searching by classification codes concentrates on the outdated and obsolete US class codes which the USPTO no longer uses. Only searches in the USPTO and EPO are included and the information reported is available for free on each site. Advanced Google search is barely mentioned and increasing relevant results with Google through advanced search techniques is completely absent. Also absent is searching WIPO and open source databases such as Patent Lens, EMBL,Free patents online, etc. Total lack of analyzing and reporting search results in an informative manner for the client. I threw it away.

I own an early version of this book, but decided I better upgrade before resuming my own personal patent activities. As always, I enjoy the straight forward and concise advice by Mr. Hitchcock. I am blessed with four patents (though work for hire.) I canâ€™t imagine filing my own without the wisdom contained in these pages. Worth every penny.

I setup corporations as serve as a senior business consultant for attorneys and individuals alike, and each year but the NOLO and Entrepreneur publications to stay updated and for additional insider information. I find them easy to understand, and their information reliable. Laws, and procedures change, so it's important to update these books regularly.

I've worked on enough PHP and other lousy web code to have cringed when I read the title of this book: Embedding Perl in HTML with Mason. "No!" I cried, "don't cross the streams!" By the end of the book, I was feeling much more at ease (but I still cringe a little at that title).Mason is (though it seems debated) a cross between a lightweight application server and a very lightweight templating system. Requests go into Mason, which dispatches them to handlers and produces a response. The handlers and dispatch are simple but powerful: they use ideas object-oriented programming and allow the programmer to easily abstract and reuse code parts.It seems like a very powerful system, but its programmer-facing interface is fairly simple. The book walked through all the basic Mason concepts (request, autohandlers, dhandlers, components, methods, etc.) quickly, but with sufficient explanation and demonstration to make everything clear. Chapter 8 walked through the construction of a web and database application, using all the major features covered so far. The features had already been so clearly explained that I felt comfortable just skimming through the chapter.After that, the book began to cover some more esoteric concepts. Mason is made up of a number of classes: an interpreter, a lexer, a compiler, and a resolver. A programmer can write his own class to implement any of these components, changing the system to suit his whims.At the end of all this, I felt like I could really make Mason do a lot of cool things, and that it was a nice-sized solution for a lot of problems. (I still don't see myself actually /using/ Mason for anything, but now I know it's not so bad, and I know how to use it.) The book was well-written, had the right amount of depth, and was the right length for end-to-end reading. I'm glad I read it.

I am using Mason for about a year. Then I saw the Mason book. My first tought was: "Why should I buy a book about Mason - The online documentation is excellent...?".But even the introduction chapters of this book gives you new ideas how to get things done. Starting with the second half of chapter 4 every Masonsite developer should take a close look. He will find a in deep discussion about every Mason feature - and more (e.g. The Bricolage-CMS-Appendix).I my opinion there is no discussion "to buy or not to buy" this book. The only question is "when".On the one hand this book can be a bit boring for "new" Mason user and as mentioned before the online documentation is very good. On the other hand if you have your first mason-site done and read this book you will have very likely the urgent desire to rewrite some code.But this is a common perl problem: "There are many ways to get things done."I dislike the "Example" chapter. One of the big advantages of Mason is the possibility to seperate perl-code and HTML. This ist not very well done within the example-site.Conclusion: This book is not needed to get in touch with Mason althought usefull - but if you are really starting to deploy a site I strongly recommend this book.

Far from being just a reference, this book explains the conceptual framework behind Mason. The main idea of which is creating reusable components or building blocks to generate each element of your web site. This simple but powerful idiom is extremely useful in creating both small and very large dynamic web sites.The book is aimed at intermediate to advanced Perl programmers, although a bright beginner could pick the material up with a little help from the Mason community's very helpful mailing list. This book is not a tutorial. Instead, the authors devote a long chapter (chapter 8) to the analysis of a fully functional web app with full source code. I preferred this approach however because it helped me focus on the application as a whole rather than silly pedantic examples that lack context.Before reading this book, I had some experience working on a site that used a "home-brewed" templating system, but all the while I knew there had to be a better way. After reading through the first four chapters, I was able to build a rather sophisticated site and have been quite pleased with both Mason and this book. I fully recommend it.

But.. it is a little too short. Not really but I would have loved to have more book. The book covers just about every topic. I personally would have enjoyed to have more examples in each area. They made sure that there is at least on example for each topic. They even give some information about other competing products and about products that use Mason as it's base (for example Bircolage - I think I spelled that correctly). I am really glad the book to come out, it is a perfect addition to my collection of O'Reilly and Perl books.Thanks for a great book!

Apart from being clear and well-written, this book is also the sum of all the knowledge of the Mason community, written by two of the developers of Mason themselves.If you already use Mason, it's a must have.If you are new to Mason, try it first (it isn't difficult at all), then read the book.From my point of view this is an excellent technical book.

This is a good book. I had no idea about mason but helped me get right up to speed. Recommended for anyone who wants to get their foot in the door to learn mason.
