Christine King Farris is the sister of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and the only surviving member of the King family. She is the author of the children's book My Brother Martin and has been on the faculty of Spelman College since 1958. She lives with her husband in Atlanta.Chris Soentpiet (pronounced: soon-peet) is a recipient of a gold medal from the Society of Illustrators; has received accolades from the International Reading Association, Parents magazine, the American Library Association, the School Library Journal, the Chicago Tribune, the San Francisco Chronicle, and the Smithsonian; and has been recognized by the American Society of Portrait Artists Foundation. When not painting, Chris visits schools across the country promoting the love of children's literature and the arts. I can't recommend this book enough. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful, and it is a beautifully-written book as well!

I bought this book to give to my 9 year old grandson for Christmas. It came yesterday and I was curious to see if I could learn anything I didn't already know about Martin Luther King. It was very interesting and written to encourage children to live and work to achieve their dreams. Such an enjoyable and easy read. Very well written.

Good but words

This book is a personal account by Dr. King's sister about growing up with the future trailblazer. It is an easy read aloud, and informative. Good primary source and a great starting place for some good prewriting activities, as well as more detailed writing activities. Nice book.

The idea of erotica short stories to read in bed is wonderful. And some of the ideas in this book are good. But I can't give it a better rating because the editing was very poorly done. This young writer has something to share, however, they need to invest in a professional editor with the next book. I had difficulty reading due to all the typos and mistakes. Also agree with other reviewers than more stories would have been nice. Still not a zero - some sexy stuff within.

These were awful. Poorly written...embarrassed to have spent the money. Can I give a 0 rating? Or a negative star rating? Lol

Terrible editing, hard to get into it when the scene is set in the "leaving" room and the character says "I carve your c*ck". Only 5 similar stories, widely spaced to make thin book appear larger. Don't recommend.

This is a fantastic collection, and it came out at the perfect time in my fledgling copyediting career; I'm familiar enough with what the work entails to easily understand the terminology and topics, but I'm newbie enough to be quite starstruck about the whole process. Excellent-quality essays--illuminating and entertaining--plus plenty of helpful additional reading. Thank you, Mr. Ginna and contributors, for reminding me what I aspire to and why.

As a writer, I found this collection of essays illuminating. I skipped a few that were not relevant to my interests (such as the one devoted to scholarly writing). I learned a lot, enjoyed the reading, and have a new appreciation for the role of the editor in shepherding a text to market. Great stuff.

Very comprehensive analysis of all jobs/functions in the book business, especially the author-editor relationship. Lots of real-life vignettes in reader-friendly language. Also has very interesting insights into the latest revolutionary changes in the book business. VERY useful all around!

Essential reading for anyone in publishing. Well edited. Comprehensive and a good primer and reminder. Aware of the current state of Publishing.

This is one of the few books about writing that grabbed my attention from start to finish. It was very helpful with many great examples. I highly recommend it.

I did not skip a single chapter. Important notes for any of us engaged in the business of making books.

About the Author

James William (Jim) McMurtray was born in the Mississippi Delta. He worked as a science teacher and planetarium director before serving 20 years as a contractor to NASA's Education Division. During this period he presented lectures and workshops on NASA astronomy and space science missions throughout the United States and in Mexico, Venezuela,and Puerto Rico. 

 In 1984-1985 he was an instructor in NASA's Space Flight Participant Program, conducting seminars for the 114 candidates of the original Teacher in Space Project. In 2004, McMurtray presented testimony to the President's Commission on Implementation of US Space Exploration Policy, (Moon, Mars and Beyond) He is the retired Executive Director of the National Alliance of State Science and Mathematics Coalitions in Washington, DC in 2009 and continued to serve NASSMC as Senior Policy Advisor.

 McMurtray has written six novels. He is also the author of Barbarian Science, a humorous book on science literacy in America, (1999), and Starlight, a nationally distributed planetarium show on the physics of stars (1981). McMurtray still writes and speaks on systems thinking and structural reform in science, technology, and mathematics education. He builds boats -- some that fit in bottles and some that you can sit in. He lives in Virginia with his wife. They have five grown children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren -- for whom he sometimes makes up bedtime stories.

No listing of Recipes. Would have like to know what kind was in the book before buying. Looking for more meat dishes.

It’s too big, not structured, quite useless, and the worst - it has mistakes. You see an ingredient in the list, but no mention of it in the cooking process.

I love that these recipes are so easy and healthy and there is even a chapter about the healthiest spices so you take what you learn in this cookbook and apply to other meals and this cookbook offers recipes for seafood, chicken, pork, beef, turkey and lamb and the instructions were easy to follow and the pot made preparation even easier and So there are lots of good recipes, but what I particular like apart from the large number of recipes is that at the beginning of the book the author provides an extensive introduction, which also provides a detailed overview on how your instant pot cooker works as well as a detailed outline regarding interesting spices which you can use to make your recipes more excited and i really appreciated this as many authors just throw in a bunch of spices into their recipes without any reference as to why they are using them and his device helps me save time by cooking food quickly, and it automatically keeps your food warm in case you need to head out but want a warm meal when you get back and this device really is a time saver and is super efficient. Some of the food items I use it for include eggs, veggies, rice, potatoes, and meat and it really does it all in a short period of time.

I obtain most of my meals via fast food, and I was looking to start eating healthier. I needed recipes that a non-cook like me could handle and would not take a long time to prepare. In this book I found very informative recipes that are tasty and quick. It cuts cooking time down and is simple to use. I am finding it to be a great asset in my kitchen.

Some of the recipes require ingredients I don't usually have around the house, but those are few and far between. The instructions are easy to follow and the results of the recipes I've tried are quite tasty. No-salt-added/low sodium cooking is essential for extending the lives of congestive heart failure patients. The author is living proof of the success of drastically cutting salt in the diet. His advice and recipes have helped my husband immensely in his recovery. As for myself, it has taken over 3 months for my desire for salty foods to diminish, something the hospital's nutritionist said is normal. Now on the rare occasion when I crave salty things, 5 olives will suffice when before I'd eat an entire bag of chips and want more. My blood pressure has dropped significantly and I've lost 35 pounds since May, 2011. Until my husband developed CHF, we had no idea how addictive and how dangerous even the FDA-recommended daily maximum for salt is (1500 mg. to 2300 mg.) and how much sodium we had been consuming through everyday foods, not just junk food, which is worse. I highly recommend books by this author.

Really excellent cookbook with lots of interesting recipes. We like the recipe for making your own sausage, which has become a staple in our household now. Worth purchasing the cookbook just for that!

I got this book from the library to try it and didn't want to give it back. The recipe for faux soy sauce alone makes the book worthwhile--I can eat sushi again! I truly don't understand the first reviewer's complaint that the book had too many recipes from other countries (!) Duh! It's an INTERNATIONAL cookbook! Well, I like international food and am glad I don't have to give that up to eat low sodium. I'm buying this baby and it'll have a place on my shelf for sure.

All the NO SALT, LOW SODIUM books I ordered are very helpful since I am on a low sodium diet; learned a lot from reading these books I didn't know about earlier. Very good investment.

I really like Don's cookbooks. He is one of the few true low sodium sources. If you have a health problem thatt requires low salt cooking, he is the best source. He is an inspiration to us and a great source of ideas that really work. If you tied the others, you will soon realize this series is the best

Many of the recipes were billed as 'delicious' but did not live up to this billing. Of course, it's difficult at best to cook flavorfully without salt.I found the index confusing and had difficulty locating recipes I knew I had seen in perusing. E.g. 'sausage' would sometimes be under 'breakfast', sometimes on under 'sausage', and other times under an ethnic grouping.I'd recommend flagging any often used entries with post-it notes.The book did inspire my own, often very tasty versions, piggy-backed off the authors' offerings.

The most important things I liked about this book were the accurate dates, presentation of the mindset of the people (including the leaders of different factions), and the political highs as well as the lows of the Yoruba people from 1800 AD to 1900 AD.

Ignoring the obvious Oyo bias of the author this resource material alongside others, details the incontrovertible evidence of an ancient African civilization on which the principles of democracy could rest. It details the cultural concepts that helped to overcome the colonial beast and gives a name to terrorism in ancient times. The only draw back is that the book did not investigate the insidious root of the word "Yoruba" - an abusive 18th century coinage of ancient terrorists. The original Olukumi tag would have furthered the cause of our national reawakening.

During a training, a teacher modeled using this book; I was in tears by the end of it. I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just teachers. I think we can all relate to this book's theme and message!

Prior to reading this book to my class of third grade students, I wondered if the story would be too sad or "heavy" for them. Laura's mother has died and is dealing with her feelings for her step-mother. She has a "memory string" given to her by her mother with buttons that represent family memories. When the memory string breaks, she loses one of her most valued buttons, a button from her father's Army uniform that her mother had added when he returned from the Gulf War. My students loved the story and the wonderful illustrations. The story prompted many students to share their text-to-self connections relating to adjusting to a step-parent or dealing with the loss of a family member. We also did a writing activity involving their own memories and I had to give them very little prompting. The story had already stirred so many ideas and emotions in them, that they were easily able to write about several memories of their own families. I fell in love with Eve Bunting's writing after reading this book!

The Memory String is a wonderful touchstone text that lends itself to writing activities. As a member of the Louisville Writing Project, the book was first introduced to me and used in this manner by Synthia Shelby. Students create their own memory strings in a writing activity after being read the book. This can be done with all grade levels. As a literacy leader at Meredith-Dunn School in Louisville, I developed a lesson that I took to several classrooms in the school. Once students (and teachers) create their own memory strings, suddenly, they have all sorts of seeds of ideas for writing in various genres. It shows students that memories are not always happy and exemplifies the resiliency of the human spirit. My students were able to connect with the character, and with each others' memories, initiating more dialogue to help with their writing processes.Eve Bunting has written so many texts that can be used to faculitate writing as well as help children to make connections and to consider social issues and how they impact them their world and future. I found it fascinating to go and research button charm strings of the past after reading this book and then help my daughters to create memory strings of their own. The illustrations are beautiful as well.

Eve Bunting is one of my favorite children's authors. Once again the text is beautifully written and can be used to teach a variety of standards.

This is a sweet story about a little girl who loses her mother and her father is remarried. She has a memory string with buttons from different family memebers. Each button is a special memory about that person. The story tells about the relationship between the stepmom and the little girl. I plan to use this book in my 3rd grade classroom. It's good for a lesson on schema or questioning.

Great book and pretty emotional, even to my son that's almost 10 years old.
