Review

“Powerful.” ―The New York Times Book Review“Gripping.” ―The Boston Globe“Brilliant.” ―The New Yorker“A landmark book.” ―San Francisco Chronicle“Everyone should read and learn from this luminous book...[Slaves in the Family] is not only honest in its scrupulous reporting but also personal narrative at its finest.” ―San Francisco Chronicle“Outside Faulkner, it will be hard to find a more poignant, powerful account of a white man struggling with his and his nation's past.” ―The Atlanta Journal-Constitution“Much more than bare history...It's the human encounters, and the live, breathing juxtaposition of past and present, that give [Edward Ball's] book its vibrancy and importance.” ―Detroit Free Press“A masterpiece . . . It is a work about slaves in the family. But it is also a large omnium-gatherum of enchanting fireside anecdotes, secrets teased out of reluctant fragments from the remote past, the real lives of blacks and whites whose stories had been lost in the disintegrating churn of time until Edward Ball's patient reconstructions.” ―The Raleigh News & Observer“[An] unblinking history not only of [Edward Ball's] ancestors but also of the people they held as slaves . . . It reminds us of our common humanity and of the ties that still bind us, no matter what the wounds of the past.” ―The Philadelphia Inquirer

This book was most fascinating to read. It is meticulously crafted based on records kept in the family. Mr. Ball traces his ancestors' slaveholding roots up to the present day, where he reunites families and stories, shedding light on the real relationships maintained by slaveholders and those subject to the "peculiar institution" of slavery. Mr. Ball wonderfully details how the lines were not always kept so clean, and how rules and cultures within the slaveholding society were both maintained and broken, depending on the individuals involved.I award only three stars to this novel because I believe that it would benefit greatly from reorganization. The book follows one line of the family up so far and then darts to another line, to come back later to the original line. I found myself turning back throughout the book to remember who each person was and how they fit into the lineage.

I bought this book for a class about the African American Museum being built in Charleston SC....although the facts were often new to me what struck me the most is the utter oblivion of the slave owner class...still don't understand it but I see it still living so plainly in today's politics. Very relevant to today and extremely thought provoking....I was not ready to have the story end. Would have liked to read the continuation of the story.

I picked up Slaves in the Family because I have been doing research on family who owned plantations in South Carolina in the 1700s and 1800s. Like me, Edward Ball's family owned numerous plantations across South Carolina, and he wanted to explore the relationships and usually unspoken family ties between masters and slaves. This is a long book, and it does get confusing at times keeping all of the various Ball family members straight. However, the author does an excellent job of writing an interesting narrative that keeps moving, and he does a good job of reiterating throughout "who is who."The thing that struck me the most in this book is the tremendous amount of research the author did about social history, plantation life, slave trade, etc., in addition to family history. The amount of information he has been able to unearth about Ball family members and slave families is unbelievable. The Notes section of the book is a huge resource for new sources to check for information for my family research.Anyone interested in family history or the antebellum south will greatly enjoy this book.

Very interesting take on a southern family's genesis and one man's attempt to find out about his family's past. I love that he included the huge index on genealogic sources and places he went to get info since I'm researching my southern family as well. It was refreshing that he included the negative and positive things he found out about his slave owning ancestors and that he went to such lengths to locate the decendants of the slaves. This man was very lucky that his family members were such pack rats and record keepers!

A great picture of slavery in the south from before the revolution up to and beyond the civil war. My knowledge of this country's history was vastly improved by reading this book. The author combines personal anecdotes and connections with the results of extensive research, creating a rich and informative work. Together with 'The Invention of Wings', this book really made me want to visit Charleston.Weirdly, there are a couple different editions of this book out there. At our book group meeting, some friends had an older edition that had one more chapter about the author going to Bunce Island in West Africa.

I was really excited to read this book, not least because of the glowing reviews here and in the press. I'm very interested in the subject matter and anticipated a good read. But I was disappointed. This book is in desperate need of a good editor. It is repetitive and has a lot of intrusive grammatical errors. Sometimes two paragraphs say exactly the same thing with almost exactly the same words. There is a lot of unnecessary detail. The book is 418 pages not including back matter, and the material could have been well covered in 300 pages. My favorite parts were the interviews with black families, especially when the author returned to the locations of his ancestors' plantations with descendants of slaves that had been held on those plantations. I was very moved.
