After a decade or two in ministry, there are only a handful of books that I recommend unilaterally. This is now one of those books.I have learned the hard way that board and staff relations and structures can make or break a ministry. This book handles many of the most pressing issues in our churches from a structural level with great insight and wisdom.Along with "Not your Parent's Offering Plate," "Deep and Wide," Simple Church," Lasting Impact," "not a fan," and just a few others, I feel this book should be read widely by pastors and attendees alike.

This is one of the best leadership books for churches in years. I loved it. My friend Tim Spivey has talked about this book for years, and finally I got around to reading it. He is a great leader, and understands congregations better than most preachers. So his recommendation meant something to me. And boy, he was right. This is one of those books that all leaders should go through. Elders, and preachers, need to read this book together. At Castle Rock, we have been reviewing books as a leadership team, and this is up there as a possibility. It talks about having a team in ministry, and staying on the same page. It is first of all practical. It deals with church, and gives situations, and a how to in dealing with them. Here is some wisdom from the book. ”I like to remind our board members and staff leaders that we’re lobbyists for God. Our primary job is to listen to, discern, and carry out God’s will, not the congregation’s.” (p. 53). “Wise pastors and leadership teams know an important paradox of leadership: church harmony is inversely related to the amount of time spent oiling squeaky wheels. This is a lesson I was slow to grasp. In my zeal for maintaining peace and unity within the body and for holding on to everyone who came, I allowed a tiny group of chronic complainers to have an inordinate impact on our decisions and ministry.” (p. 80). The book is filled with wisdom from a guy who has done it before, and experienced the work. He talks about keeping unity in the team. As a leader, this book helped me. It has influenced my style of leadership, and it will help you too. It is not long, and it is a fun read. As a preacher, you will relate, and as an elder, you will relate. This one is well worth the money.

Good book. Larry makes leadership recommendations beyond the scope of the Bible. Some have complained that he does not back all his recommendations with bible verses. While I go to the Bible first, there is not a ton of detail on some topics. Most books on this category summarize what the Bible teaches. Larry’s perspective is really appreciated. If you need a book to tell you to be humble, pray and read your Bible don’t buy this one.

I found this to be a very helpful book to read especially for those in leadership roles in the church. I found most of the advice to be very helpful. There were a few comments in the book towards other Christians (no names mentioned) he had conflict with that seemed loaded with anger and frustration that although truthful seemed like a wrong way to express it...This would not keep me from reading the book though as it is practical and filled with wisdom and no one has the perfect heart attitude all of the time especially when dealing with crisis. All in all, a great and helpful resource.

Stick Teams appears to have been written by a church leader who has adopted a dictatorial style of leadership. He seems to have selected a team of men who agree with his thinking and who will support his decisions. His premise seems to be that a small group of people who are in agreement are much easier to deal with than a congregation of many people, some of whom will likely not agree with the proposals set forth. It also appears that this model of leadership has enabled the leader to work with large congregations which may have developed many small groups which fall under his leadership. It appears to me that it requires a person with a special kind of personality to make this kind of leadership work.

One of the best books on the design and implementation of small groups in the church that I have read. This book is the most practical I have ever read when it deal with real life issues of implementing small groups. Larry Osborne speaks from a wealth of experience and is able to keep what can be a quite complicated undertaking and present it in a simple matter. This is a must read for any church leader who wants to be effective in leading small groups. It is so easy to complicate and sometimes over manage small groups. I have read many books on small groups and I have been trying to implement small groups in the church I pastor for quite a few years. This book has been extremely helpful to a person like me, who has had some successes, but has had difficulty sustaining the groups.

This is one of the best books I have ever read concerning the way a church board should or team of elders should operate. If you want a friendly church, then you need friendly leadership that truly get along with each other. Larry Osborne shares the ideas that have worked for him.

This offers some good thoughts on church leadership, particularly for a church planter. However, owing the the broad spectrum of Christian denominations, one must take this advice with a grain of salt.

Most people think that the primary value a financial professional brings to the table is increased investment performance. But the truth is that investment performance normally plays a very minor role in the overall financial success for most retirees. The most important factors that determine success or failure for most retirees is risk mitigation and income tax planning. David McKnight covered income tax strategies in his first book The Power of Zero. Now McKnight brilliantly illustrates risk mitigation in The Volatility Shield where he shows the main character going broke despite very acceptable investment returns and what seems to be a sustainable withdrawal rate.When I received my copy of the book I decide to read a chapter or two before putting it down and taking it home. Instead, I read it cover to cover in one sitting. It was refreshing that a book dedicated to some pretty hefty financial concepts was written as a financial novella. You actually get emotionally invested in the characters. While the story itself may be a bit far-fetched, the financial concepts are sound. And, most importantly, McKnight refrains from hyperbole which is often prevalent in these types of books.

Two of the most dreaded retirement risks the vast majority of retirees have no idea exist, sequence of return and market draw down, are fabulously explained and solved in this very simple and everyday story. The myths of Wall Street like average rates of return, the 4% Rule and their hatred for the “volatility buffer” are all dealt with in a way every person can understand and feel. Ask yourself one question; If what Wall Street and brokers and the government has been telling you is true about retirement planning for the last 50 years, then why is it that 75% or more of all retirees and soon-to-be-retirees are afraid of either not having enough money or running out of money in retirement??? This book tells you WHY and how to SOLVE that problem.

Great read! Love the story telling way to explain these retirement planning techniques. I am a retirement planner and use David’s principles every day in my practice. And this book, like the POZ, are very helpful not only for consumers, but also I think should be required reading for financial advisers.

Most financial books are dry and boring but this book reads like a short novel with an interesting twist. However, don't believe for one second that it doesn't make valid financial points because it certainly does! Solid advice for those who don't mind thinking outside the box.

David McKnight has done it again. For anyone thinking permanent life insurance is for older people, think again. David lays out a plan and supports it with language that even I can understand. I wish I could give it 10 Stars!

Great read! Very relevant in today’s financial environment. David does a great job telling a compelling story, adding in several financial concepts without confusing the reader. This book should be read by every financial advisor and its concepts should be discussed with each of their clients.

He and Gabby are sent to live with Alex's estranged grandfather for one week. Normally if you are sent to a resort dome you would expect fun and relaxation, but Alex and Nycholas are not on the best of speaking terms and to Alex it will be a nightmare. But of course the Jahiliyahns have not given up their claim on Gabby and the queen has stepped forward to defeat Alex. How will Alex defeat someone who literally can control sand, and what will be the price for that ability?This book brings to light a lot of Alex's abilities that showed up in the last two books as well as some of his past. Not just with his stepgrandfather, but also with Alice and Jasamine (who has come more forward in this novel). Also his relationship with Gabby takes a step forward, just like To Love Ryu, as he thinks its only to protect her, but now he wonders if she does truly care for him. I hope the next novel comes out soon because this series has become interesting

Another fun volume that I easily devoured in one sitting. I love that Alex and this series are starting to develop its own identity and separate itself from the To Love Ru comparisons. While it is still present, it is refreshing to be going in a much different direction that I am thoroughly enjoying. Jasmine is also starting to become my favorite and I look forward to seeing more of her in future volumes. At this point, anything Brandon Varnell releases is an instant purchase for me, love everything he writes. Can't wait for more books!

Alex goes to meet his Grandfather, Jiraiy-*COUGH AHEM* Nicholas and his home resort and gets attacked by aliens. Good times were had by all. Thank you Brandon for this enjoyable story, and thank you Xuahannin for your excellent illustrations! Your hard work has made a lot of people's days a whole lot better!

Another fun chapter in the story, with a good chance to see the characters develop, with the obligatory hot springs episode and all the Hijinks That can ensue. Still the only downside is having to wait for the next volume.

A nice mix of sci-fi, comedy & teenagers trying to figure out commitment, relationships & other tomfoolery. A fun read!

I decided to read this series when the frist book was on sale for .99 and I'm so glad I did the character are funny and developing well i can't wait to see what the story has in store for Alex's past hurry up and come out with the next volume

Great addition to the series. here we see as the author really pushes away from the series that inspired this work and really break into it's own. Loved it and can't wait for the rest.

Great book if your looking for a lighthearted future read. With each book Brandon writes he gets better and better. Looking forward to the next one.

I am only partially into this book but already it is presenting practical advice on dealing with pain and illness. the author explores the many very subtle difficulties encountered by those suffering from chronic coditions and how to use mindfulness to cope with them. among the most important is being able to communicate openly so that people can help. self compassion and choosing how to expend one's energy are some of the tools she presents. she is a very good writer and the chapters are short and succinct.

Refreshing read. It's easy to become consumed in the pain and difficulty of each day. It is refreshing for the spirit to remember that good and beauty can still be found in each day.

Another gem for the chronically ill from Toni. Her book "How to be Sick" changed my life. I have Fibromyalgia & other health challenges but I have learned to have an honest, full & joyful life. Our bodies seem to adapt more quickly than our brain & emotions to living with the limitations of chronic pain & illness. If you have a chronic illness, love someone with a chronic illness and/or are a caregiver, this is a must read.

Great book for anyone who suffers from chronic illness. Its especially helpful for individuals who are confined mostly to the home. I've known about mindfulness for years and have tried to put it into practice myself but this book has made it very clear as to where mindfulness will help the most in my day-to-day life.

As a person with a chronic illness who lives in a more rural area I have had very few opportunities to talk to others with a similar situation. I have read two books by this author and her thoughts and ideas have helped me cope better with the illness with which I deal.

Toni Bernhard never fails to inspire and help me. This is her third book, and they are all wonderful. Chronic pain and illness can be great teachers, and Toni makes the learning more enjoyable and less painful! Religiously, I am a Reform Jew, but life and disability have taught me to be a Buddhist. Toni is my guru <3.

Toni Bernhard writes some of the best books on coping with chronic illness that I've ever seen (and I've read most of them). I recommend this book to almost all my psychotherapy clients who are dealing with chronic illness.

I've been a commodities trader for many years but I've never owned a book by Gann so I bought this to use more as a reference than a first time read. I'm very familiar with many of his concepts but wanted to get them first hand instead of "Gann said..." which I know more often than not is used as a false come-on to lure you to the commentator's product - including software.That said, I'm rating the book on the quality of the printed product and not on Gann's trading. I purchased this book new directly from Amazon. Beginning with the Gann charts on page 329 there are five of them that are completely unreadable because the crosshatch on the chart along with its comments are mostly blank. It is a production problem. The five charts simply didn't reproduce on the page. They are blotchy or in some cases almost blank. The printing quality isn't limited to the charts. Some of the textual pages are lighter than others and some are heavy black, obviously a problem with the printer.I'm not exchanging the book because there is no guarantee that the next one will be any better and you know good and well they're not going to thumb through the book before shipping it out.C'mon Amazon - at the price you're getting for this product you can do better.

WD Gann wrote this updated version of the book in 1951. Yes, 1951. His methodologies and style, as well as his world view, are so....well 1950's. However, what he provides to those of us who want to be successful in trading commodites is a broad set of 'do's and dont's' that you can find in nearly every trading book written today. You know, "stop loss orders", "dont over trade", "never risk more than X%" of your capital on a given trade, "let your winning trade's ride", "get out of a bad trade immediately", "when in doubt, there is no doubt".... We have read them all before. NONE of this is of any real value to the modern trader. However, what is of value, is getting a recognition of the painstaking historical analysis that WD Gann went through BEFORE he traded any commodities. This book includes several 100 year analyses of all the traded commodities of his time. The analyses include what happened in the "month of September in 1897" in cotton. And then that is followed by the next relevant technical occurance, which happened in October of 1897. He does this for many of the commodites of the time from 1841 to 1941. What the reader comes away with in my opinion, is that commodities are cyclical in nature. And that if you can holistically 'feel' the history and the motion of the cycles that exist in each commodity, you can trade more effectively. This includes understanding the 'how we got here' and the relevant bigger picture points that one can glean from looking at the historical data on a specific commodity. For example, that in the last 100 years (1841-1941), (I am making this up) Corn has reached a new yearly high in the month of June 22 times, and a new low in August 36 times. Whereas, new highs were reached in February only 2 times, and new lows reached in December 2 times. This information is valuable to a trader who knows what to do with this type of information. In my view, dont look to this book for more information on "how to trade" as much as you should look at 'what to do' to improve your chances of success. One last note, if you are looking to get some background or academic knowledge on how GANN lines are used, or GANN Boxes or any of the other GANN ascribed technical tools used or invented by GANN, this book DOES NOT show, teach or discuss any of them.

Well, there are great things about that book but don't let the amount of pages fool you. Most of the book is historical records of specific commodities and the as they are somewhat useful the real value is Gann's trading rules sprinkled in the pages.

I like this book. It does not promise "90% accurate signals" or treat reader with condescension. It teaches three things: 1) "swing trading" methods, 2) how to pay attention, 3) never forget stop loss orders.The book itself is structured in three large parts: 1) W.D. Gann's approach to markets and trader's discipline, 2) examples of trading patterns from various commodities all the way from 19th century, 3) addendum from 1951 with some more details and clarifications.Some people complain that Gann's writing style is too monotonous and droning. It is true in the sense that he does not entertain. But he does cover more ground than all those easy-reading "Trading for Dummies" book which are typeset in triple space with large charts.Parts of this book and interpretations of Gann's methods are available on the web - but it is still nice to have it as a book.

This is a book that will give you the insight to real futures trading, but is demands that you study. Not for the dilatant. No get rich quick book, but will make you rich if you gain understanding.
