Very sweet and funny book! I love the way the book goes back and forth between MacLaine and Terry (her dog). She in true MacLaine style goes deep into the unknown and the "what if's" about life. The detail she gives to the surroundings makes you feel like you're right there with them going along with them on movie sets and mountains and walks. Such a great book and I'll be reading it many times over throughout the years. MacLaine ALWAYS entertains while making you think and helps you keep your mind open! Thank you Miss Shirley MacLaine!

Great book about life death and the love of a "forever " dog. Dogs never die they remain with us!

Shirkley McClaine never surprises me with her books. This book, OUT ON A LEASH" is really different in format. She writes a chapter, then TERRY, herterrier "writes a chapter on her view book of life and spiritualism," and living with Shirley. Well, you know Terry didn't really write it, but I really enjoyed the book, which was a fast two day read for me. If you enjoy Shirley McClaine as an actress and writer, buy the book, please. It is truly different, and offers view points on life and living from a dog's point of view. Thanks!

I love Shirley Maclaine and have read all of her books. This book didn't disappoint, rather, it made me feel moved and uplifted from beginning to end.

I've decided to write a review after perusing all the ones already written, and after reading the book myself. I want any future potential buyer to know what's what. Disregard all those comments that say Shirley MacLaine has lost it, is fuzzy-minded or too sentimental. While "Out On a Limb" remains Shirley's best book so far, this one is clear-headed as can be and deals with a different subject, a magical animal. What those other comments indicate is the readers' lack of a sense of humor.You know some people are so darn literal, right? In truth, there are wonderful insights and wisdoms throughout the book. If you don't like animals, or if you think a dog is a dog is a dog, then you probably won't relate that well to the book, unless you recognize truth when you see it. This experience Shirley is having with a canine is rare. Her dog, Terry. is not your father's four-legged pal or your mother's cutsy, cuddly snookums. It's not about 90% of what most of us have experienced with a family dog or an adorable, sweet, or smart dog or cat that we loved and remember fondly. No, this is that rare 10% of animals that come into one's life that transcend the ordinary pooch or pussy. You have to experience it to understand it.Shirley is NOT ga-ga in her dotage over a pet! She has been gifted with one of these transcendent animals and she is right: they do speak to their humans in many ways, and they love you like no man or woman has ever loved you (unless you're very, very lucky) before. I'm not talking about devotion. That's ordinary, expected. I'm talking about the real thing: unconditional love. We use that expression too much these days and most of us are lying about it. Frankly, we don't know what we're talking about. It's something we want to do, something we want to get, but we seldom come close. When we do, it's unforgettable whether it happens with man, woman or beast. It's a spiritual experience to be treasured and Shirley is one lucky lady.

I enjoyed this story a lot. Uplifting and joyful.

For students of palaeo and forensic anthropology, this book is an excellent field guide and reference. Although some of the terminologies and formulae are American-orientated, Bass has produced an excellent supplement to standard texts which makes identification of 'minor' skeletal parts a bit easier. It's a pity about the spiral binding which limits its life off the bookshelf. I ended up removing the covers which I covered in plastic book wrap and replaced within the wire spiral - hopefully this will entend its life.It would be useful if future editions could include stature regression formulae for a wider cross section of world geographic groups (broader than just America - we are not all the same!). It would also be useful to develop an indexed interactive CD version which could be loaded onto a laptop.Overall, an excellent resource.

Another excellent William Bass reference source for human osteology.

I was looking forward to a gripping, non-fiction read combining archeology with a rip-roaring good mystery. Alas, Mr. Preston provides some, but not enough, of both. However, he apparently felt that he needed more, so he added in a little "Hot Zone" (by another Preston, presumably not a relative) and some environmentalism and a bit of Siddhartha Mukherjee in his discussion of a tropical disease he contracted during the expedition he chronicles. Don't get me wrong -- I agree with his riffs on the deforestation disaster that's occurring in Honduras and elsewhere, as well as our susceptibility to diseases in a world where you can go from an uncharted, snake- and disease-infested jungle to midtown Manhattan in a day or two. The problem I have is that they are separate topics and probably deserve a more through treatment and that in addressing them in this book he makes it far less a "fun" read than I expected. (I also question whether he's sufficiently informed as to all of these areas to be trusted, but I do think he's very smart and I'm prepared to accept that he's something of a Renaissance Man.)So while the book was OK, I found it to be too much of a mish-mash of different topics, none of which was given adequate treatment and all of which distracted from the other topics.

Having been fortunate enough to travel to Central America to see the Mayan ruins at Copan, Tikal, Coba, and Chichen Itza I really connected with this story. The basic story line (based on true events) is about the discovery of the long lost "City of the Monkey God" (AKA "White City", etc.) after failed attempts during the 19th and 20th centuries. A technology breakthrough in radar, through combining of Laser and Radar technologies, finally enabled explorers/archeologists to "see" through the dense tropical jungle of central Honduras and see evidence of man-made structures, plazas, and other features that literally would have been next to impossible in "on the ground" expeditions. With support of the Honduran government, the U.S. led multi-national team uses helicopters to get to the site and make discoveries of artifacts. Without adequate time (or funding, or the ability to endure the dangers (disease, wild animals, pests, etc.) of the jungle) they make only two short trips (a couple of weeks each), and while no pyramids or dwellings are uncovered, they focus on the finding of a huge cache of highly valuable (archeologically and financially) carved items, vessels, altars, and other rare items. These two expeditions, and the planning activities leading up to them, comprise the bulk of the story. The follow-on is the formation of an organized Honduran national effort to protect and explore the find. Unfortunately, about half of the original team comes down with a rare tropical disease (internal parasites - ugh!) which can only be treated in a few locations around the world, and the treatment has painful side effects and only mitigates the disease without totally curing it. Also, the academic Archeological community is highly critical of the expeditions, terming them as more "Indiana Jones" adventuring than true 'on the ground' Archeological work. Nevertheless, the find is historic, and helps to shed light on the rather sudden demise and disappearance of the once mighty and numerous Latin American cultures. I found it a fascinating read (a page turner) and also very enlightening and educational. While many of us (at some point in our lives) probably dreamed of archeological and/or jungle adventure, this book opens your eyes to the dangers involved. Highly recommend.

The story starts off well and by and large moves apace and is interesting for the most part. As the author takes us through the history of the search for Cuidad Blanca, the ride keeps your interest. When the actual exploration begins you are keenly engaged in the search, and the author keeps your interest throughout. The largest critique is that the exploration phase of the book is short lived. The end of the book is largely a long description of infectious disease and a reiteration of the story of the Europeans bringing disease to the New World, and frankly gets a little tedious. Overall a good read and a good story.

I'm a big fan of the Preston & Child books, but I didn't know what to expect of Doug Preston as a journalist. After reading this, I think he's at least as talented with non-fiction as he is as a novelist. This book is terrific. It's a great story, and he manages to make it feel exciting, creating a nice sense of suspense thought the first 2/3 of the book. Most of the last 1/3 is fairly technical material related to medicine, but he communicates this material in a very reader-friendly manner. Bill Bryson is the master of this, but Preston here is nearly as skilled.

The C. S. Lewis book titled â€œThe Weight of Gloryâ€ is actually a collection of essays or lectures made by Lewis. The title of the book comes from the first of these lectures and is also the most quoted of them. Since this book is a compilation, I provide below a brief overview of each essay below.The Weight of Glory 6/8/1941 â€“ In this address, Lewis first talks about the longings we each have: the deep longing for something which no experience on earth satisfies though we have faint glimpses of, like a memory of something long ago. Itâ€™s the desire that beauty stirs within us, the longing to be fully immersed and joined into the beauty. Itâ€™s what others have described as the God shaped void within us. Lewis argues that this longing proves that there must be a world where this longing can be fulfilled and that we are made for that world.Lewis takes some time to discuss the idea of rewards received for work. First, there are rewards which are not directly connected to the work, such as being paid to clean for example. Then there are rewards which are clearly organically tied to the effort to obtain them, such as a good marriage is the reward for loving oneâ€™s spouse. Lewis points out that while the former can be accused of only doing the work for the reward, this makes no sense to say in the latter case. Lewis also notes that some rewards, while organically tied to the effort taken to obtain them, arenâ€™t recognized as desirable until one has obtained them or is at least closer to that goal. Lewis uses the example that one wouldnâ€™t know they enjoy Greek poetry until after they had gone through the work of learning Greek.Lewis believes that heaven is like this. I think he conceived of everything in heaven as being of a higher order than things of this world. Thus he talks about how we improperly long for worldly things, which are really a false substitute for the heavenly things we ought to long for.Lewis spends most of the remainder of the lecture talking about glory. He thinks that while seeking fame on earth may be conceited, desiring to please God is not. This is the first sense of glory. The second is in how we will â€œshineâ€ as Godâ€™s masterpieces. Lewis considers this idea that God can take delight in us to be something so amazing that we can barely believe itâ€”the â€œweight or burden of gloryâ€.Finally, Lewis discusses how we ought to keep otherâ€™s glory in mind when considering those around us and how this ought to keep us humble.Learning in War-Time 10/22/1939 â€“ Lewis addresses how study can seem to be a trivial pursuit during war time. His argument is primarily that we must engage in normal human activity whatever the circumstances are. And there is always some crisis or matter which may seem more important. For example, the matter of heaven and hell is always present and more significant than war. Study is a necessary undertaking to which some have been called and which they should work at despite distraction, frustration and fear.Why Iâ€™m not a Pacifist 1940 â€“ Lewis first lays a foundation from which he will build the rest of his arguments. The foundation consists of Lewisâ€™ view of the conscious as having two parts: a drive to do what is right and beliefs about what right and wrong are. Lewis next explains his concept of reason by which he will address the latter portion of the conscious. A reasonable argument, says Lewis, consists of facts, â€œintuitionâ€, and a series of linked, logical propositions. What Lewis means by intuition is that which canâ€™t be argued but with which virtually everyone agrees, such as love is good and hate is bad. (Lewis believes that people â€œmust be trained in obedience to the moral intuitionsâ€¦â€, an idea he also addresses in The Abolition of Man.) Authority is also an important consideration in deciding a matter, both because we donâ€™t have time to examine every belief and because our beliefs are liable to be corrupted.After all this groundwork, Lewis finally begins making his case. First, he considers the fact of whether or not all wars do more harm than good, concluding that â€œhistory is full of useful wars as well as of useless wars.â€ He next examines whether the intuition of love as better than hate (or helping as better than harming) leads to pacifism or not. First, he recognizes that we are incapable of helping everyone so that to help one means not helping another. He then states that if two parties are in conflict, for an observing party to do nothing would violate the intuition. (He assumes that action would come in the form of physical intervention and violence.) From here says, â€œThe question is whether war is the greatest evil in the worldâ€¦â€. This shows that he thinks of pacifism as the view that war should never be engaged in. And the only reason he could see to take this position would be if it could be argued that war is always worse than the alternative. After this, he argues that pacifism is impractical, because pacifists will be overcome by those who are not.Turning next to authority, Lewis argues that human authority, both specific (England at that time) and general (â€œrighteous warâ€ praised throughout history) support war.Examining at last divine authority, Lewis argues that current Christian authority and Christian history both support violence. The only verse which Lewis apparently can think of which might support pacifism is Matthew 5:39, â€œDo not resist an evil personâ€. Lewis believes Jesus here is addressing personal revenge and considers Paul and Peterâ€™s talk about government using the sword as support for Christians using the sword. Lastly Lewis considers his bias and argues that since it would be more convenient to be a pacifist, it is more likely for one to be biased towards it. In other words, not finding a logical reason to be pacifist nor authoritative support, Lewis concludes that people must be pacifist because it is easier and more convenient for them to do so.1Transposition 5/28/1944 â€“ Essentially, as I understand it, Lewis is addressing the argument that since alleged supernatural works of the Holy Spirit manifest as naturally explainable phenomenon, isnâ€™t it more reasonable to believe all such instances are simply natural, not supernatural? Lewisâ€™ argument is that the â€œhigherâ€ spiritual must be transposed into the â€œlowerâ€ natural world and must therefore use otherwise natural means to do so. He uses the metaphor of how we attempt to represent three-dimensional reality in two-dimensional drawings.Is Theology Poetry? 11/6/1944 â€“ Lewis addresses the question of if our beliefs about God (and even in the existence of God) are merely fanciful and quaint ideas we hold sentimentally but without any true reality behind them.The Inner Ring 12/14/1944 â€“ Lewis speaks about the desire to be â€œinâ€ and accepted along with the fear of being left out and rejected. He warns against the danger of doing wrong in order to fit in as well as the fleeting nature of the sense of being â€œinâ€.Membership 2/10/1945 â€“ Lewis refutes the idea of Christianity as a private, individual, personal matter alone. He takes some time to differentiate between groups whose members are different but complementary (metaphor of church as a body) and mere collections of like people or things. Lewis also touches on hierarchy and authority. Overall, Lewis basically argues against isolated individualism on one hand and homogeneous collectivism on the other.On Forgiveness 8/28/1947 â€“ Lewis talks about Godâ€™s forgiveness of our sins. He explores the difference between excusing (I understand, no big deal, etc.) and true forgiveness as well as how this relates to forgiving others.A Slip of the Tongue 1/29/1956 â€“ Lewis warns against the temptation to â€œplayâ€ at Christianity which comes from the desire to hold onto the things of the world. Refusing to let go of these things causes one to not get too spiritual to the point which would require real change in their life.

I would definitely recommend The Weight of Glory to any Christian with questions about living a life of faith. Lewis especially targets the college student population with his great understanding and use of logical arguments. He deals with practical concerns and pragmatic solutions. He serves the truth of the Bible with the hope found in God. In this book, Lewis attempts to address common issues young Christians struggle with as they try to own their faith in a post-World War culture. For example, in the chapter â€œLearning in Wartime,â€ he says, â€œIf we let ourselves, we shall always be waiting for some distraction or other to end before we can really get down to our work.â€ Procrastination: every college student has experienced it, and Lewis responds to it. He demonstrates an understanding off the issues, along with the feelings and emotions young people would have concerning them. Heâ€™s thorough in his logic and has obviously thought things through. In The Weight of Glory, he begins by emotionally tugging on the reader, then hits him with a sound argument, and leaves him with practical advice on how to continue living as an enlightened Christian. He brings himself on the same level as his readers; he doesnâ€™t leave them with the lofty opinions of a scholar, but with the guidelines of one experienced Christian to a younger. In his explanations and arguments, Lewis uses a lot of analogies. This is extremely helpful as he tries to explain himself and illustrate his point, however, he sometimes takes the analogies too far. He overuses some analogies and stretches them too far. This book has made my faith stronger and inspired me to live a more thoughtful life as a Christian. I want to read more of Lewisâ€™ works and delve more deeply into his doctrine.

I listen to Christian radio and Charles Colson had commented that it was 'Mere Christianity' that brought him to be a Christian. So I read the book. No one can say that C.S. Lewis is light reading. And this book is no exception. It does take concentration and quiet time to grasp the concepts discussed. But I am enjoying the book very much. The one thing that C.S. Lewis does best is using irrefutable logic to explain his position. After finishing an essay, you are left with a thought of 'Wow' and the desire to read it again.

Good follow up, but didn't leave me as wowed as book 1. Felt slightly rushed at the end. Will definitely read book 3 and would recommend.

Let me just start off by saying that this book is one of the must action filled books I've read in a long time. With the first book, Lucy was just discovering herself and what it truly means to be a Chantress. The first book in the story was filled with such slow sweet character development and world building. But in the second book, everything that needed to be set up was done, and the story just took up beautifully. I feel like his is the first series, where I actually enjoyed the second book better than the first! Usually the second books flop in my opinion. But the way the author set everything up was brilliant.I'm not going to go too much into the overall synopsis of this story, only because I don't want to spoil any of you. I will however talk about some of my favorite aspects of this story. First off let me just say that in this book, we have a new cast of characters. And the way that they are woven into the story is done so in a way that up until the end of the book, you don't really know who you can trust and who Lucy should stay far away from. At the same time characters that we met in the first book, ones we thought we could trust are starting to act find of fishy!I really enjoyed the whole alchemy aspect of this book. The quest for knowledge was such a big aspect of the time period and I thought it was beautifully portrayed in the book. And yes the science geek in me was truly wondering if some of the experiments that they were performing were actually possible (Side-Note: I suggest reading the author's note in the back as it tells you more about the actual history off Alchemy!).And Nat and Lucy's relationship in this book is once again tested. But they do have some sweet scenes that I truly cherished.But now let's get down the meat of this story and my favorite aspect of it! I loved Loved LOVED how Lucy is the "savior" once again in a group full of tough titled men! That is fun to read at any given time, but taking into account the historical aspects of this book it was even more awesome!The ending of this book is a tough one. Keep your tissues handy and your hearts protected! But it one that will keep me desperately waiting for book 3!!

About the Author

J.P. Hand is a native and lifelong resident of Cape May County, New Jersey. A decoy maker by trade, he has been crafting traditional South Jersey waterfowl carvings for over forty-four years. His passion for the history and culture of Cape May and South Jersey is expressed in the many articles he has written on those subjects. He is a past president and trustee emeritus of the Cape May County Historical & Genealogical Society and has edited their annual journal of history, commonly known as "The Blue Book" since 2008. He resides with his wife and best friend, Gwen Raring, and their son, Fritz, at "Goshen Farm," in the heart of Cape May County.Daniel P. Stites grew up in Margate, New Jersey. Dan attended Haverford College in Pennsylvania and earned a BA in German. He then went to Stanford Medical School, graduated in 1965 and trained in internal medicine at the University of North Carolina and the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. His career was spent as a medical school professor, researcher, clinician and teacher in the field of clinical immunology at the University of California in San Francisco. His medical career includes the publication of over one hundred journal articles and a number of books on the subject of immunology. He has written several articles about Cape May history for the Cape May County Magazine of History and Genealogy. He lives with his wife, Janice, in Sonoma, California.

I'm an experienced seamstress, quilter, alterations and mending expert, and I also do furniture reupholstery, and I love the book. First, I would like to point out that even though there are a couple of chapters that provide instruction for using industrial machines, that it itself does not make the book unsuitable for home users as another reviewer stated. That's like saying there are a few gourmet recipes in an otherwise general cooking book, so don't you use it! Since I don't sew the same kind of thing everyday, I do tend to forget how to achieve the best results in certain areas of sewing. For instance, I don't sew all types of zipper styles everyday, so having a good book to refer is very important to me and I'm sure you will find this book important to you. While I understand that this book may not be all one needs to sew for the apparel industry, it's still a very good book. I'm not one to judge a book by it's cover...I actually read it. I'd also like to add that used industrial machines are quite affordable. I purchased both a Juki straight stitch and a Yamato cover stitch machine each for $800 and these were complete...motor, table and machine, plus lots of feet and needles and replacement parts. The coverstitch machine is capable of six different stitch types, including chain stitch and blind hemming.

This book is perfect for first year Fashion Design students. The information is presented in a clear, concise manner. NOTE: this book covers the use of industrial machinery and equipment. It is not for home sewers. The companion pattern packet has over 100 pieces and the text book is designed to be used in conjunction with the patterns. When I was a design student, these patterns came in the form of handouts in class, and we wrote notes on how to sew each piece. This textbook takes a student with little or no industrial sewing experience from setting tension to sewing kimono sleeves and beyond. Now that I am teaching sewing myself it is wonderful to have such a well-planned, thoroughly laid out combo to teach from. Thank you Claire!Subjects covered include:Basic Production: seams, hems, darts, facings, packets and interliningsIndustrial machine skillsAssembling the garment: bands, cuffs, sleeves, closures, zippers, collars, pockets, bias applications, lining and backingHand StitchesThe Appendices also include some basic forms that are used in the industry which are fine for practice and are helpful (although most people use a computer) to calculate costs of creating a garment.

It should come with a packet of patterns to practice sewing. If not, then definitely order them. The strength is obviously that it is detailed instructions and comes with small sized patterns to help you sew. I do wish it came with a DVD to see the sewing demonstrated but I think that's just a preference and not mandatory to understand the book.

Love the content in this book.. this isn't my first book by this author so I'm aware of her techniques, however the quality of this book is rubbish. The material that was used feels much more flimsy than news paper, for the price of this book I expected top quality. Her other books that were 20 and under were made of MUCH better quality.. why am I highly highlighting this if I love the content? Well because I don't want to lose any of the content when the pages fall out and rip.. you have to be extremely careful with the pages.. I expected better compared to her other books that didn't cost 1/4 the price of this one

The contents are Well worth the purchase price and Is a valuble addition to the huge library of sewing books I've collected over many years of sewing. , my only complaint is with the quality of the paper its printed on, it's very thin and won't stand up to much wear, I normally get my workshop books ring bound but this won't cope with that process.Still, it's worth buying, along with the pattern pack that goes with it.

Got this as a book for a family friends toddler who is a fan of having stories read to him. Since I'm a sleep researcher I figured this would be an appropriate gift for a birthday. The little guy is given the choice of which story to pick for bedtime and I've been informed that this is one of his top picks now. Consistently. I think that right there speaks volumes.The hard version of this book was well put together, not coming apart and was cut cleanly.Very satisfied and so is the birthday boy.

this books deserves my review (not a lot of time here being a new mom). the moment my 11 month old got hold of this (he is a little booklover), he would start flipping the pages and he wants me to read it every time. the illustrations are so captivating and they well done! i will buy more il sung na books. all praises!

Warm and beautiful book for little ones. This book is a rare find with warm and wonderful illustrations that aid greatly the few repetitive words written. It is engaging and makes you want to go to the end of the book without skipping a lovely page. This is a wonderful book to read to your kids at bed time. The story centers around many different animals sleeping at night while the watchful wide-eyed owl keeps awake at night.This book shows kids that different animals sleep in different ways - some sleep standing up and some sleep while swimming. The drawings are warm and aid in helping kids themselves fall asleep as they can enter an imaginary world in their minds where all creatures are starting to sleep...except, of course the watchful owl, who will take his turn when the sun comes up.

This is a very sweet nighttime book. The images are gorgeous! The text is a great length for little ones: short and sweet. There are opposites and numbers (well 1 and "both" but I usually say "2 eyesâ€¦"), and my LO learned to say "owl" because we read this every night. I will say that at first I found the sunshine page a little jarring because my little one is supposed to be winding down and getting ready for nighttime sleep, not for daytime, but the last page saves the day: it gets back to being about sleeping and I can wrap it up by saying to my little one "Say good-night to owl and now say good-night to Mama"

This is a great little board book to add to your night time collection. The illustrations are gorgeous and eye-catching, perfect for infants and young toddlers. The wording is simple, gentle, and not too exciting (won't get your little one all geared up again just before bed) but is still interesting enough to hold a little one's attention. My toddler loves looking for the owl and pointing him out on each page.Not recommended for kids over age 2.5 though. After that it's much too simple and could get boring. It's a very short book and doesn't have much of a story, which is what kids around 3 and up are looking for it seems.

This is such a lovely bedtime book. My 4-month-old starts impatiently squirming or grunting with most board books*, but with this one she is enraptured until the end. I don't know if it's the beautiful images or the soothing cadence that the words create, but it's a wonderful experience every night.*Not the case with cloth books or any other books she can chew on. She's a voracious reader, quite literally.

I bought this book for my two year old daughter. She likes the vibrant colors and the animals in the pictures. She is very attached to it and it made a great birthday gift. I liked it, too. It was a fun little book for me to read to her. I really enjoy children's books that are enjoyable for both parent & child, to which, this book qualifies.

Overall I like this book. The story is cute, but sometimes I find the illustrations of the owl to be a little creepy. I don't see anyone else mentioning this so maybe it's just me, but I keep meaning to ask other people if they feel the same way. If they do, I might get rid of it or give it away. Otherwise it's a wonderfully illustrated book. I'm an artist so I always appreciate a beautiful piece of work, which this is.
