This is a good book to read to young children preparing for a hospital visit/stay.

Good book for a little one going to the hospital, especially for an injury (doesn't address disease).

Kevin is a little boy who enjoys playing and having fun outside. But one day he trips and falls. He lands on his head and is hurt. His mommy takes him to the hospital to get it checked out. Kevin has to stay in the hospital for a little while. He is a little scared, but soon learns all about staying in the hospital. It isn't as bad as he feared. It ends with the child happy to be going home and feeling better. The book was written to explain the hospital to a young child who might be afraid of what happens upon arrival. The author did a great job of making the visit seem safe and perhaps even a little fun. The pictures almost tell the story on their own and compliment the writing very well. The book is age appropriate, but my six year old son enjoyed the story when I read it to his younger sister.I received this book free of charge from Children's Lit in exchange for my honest review.

No elaborate illustrations. No fancy words. Just colorful drawings and large, easy-to-read text simply told from a child's point of view. This sturdy board book is perfectly sized for small hands. Kevin Goes to the Hospital was the first "On My Way" book we read. It was a big hit! When my 2.5-year-old daughter fell and scraped her knee, I don't know what made her feel better the most: the hug, the Band-Aid, or the reading of this story. The vocabulary is fairly simple, so it can also be used as an early reader book for your child who is just learning to read. I recommend ALL the books in this series.

I had purchased this book about 4 yrs ago when my then 3 year old was having an operation. It was a good (very simple) way to explain a complicated situation. Although Kevin fell and hurt his head (no operation), it still helped to explain to my 3 yo that Kevin went to the hospital and was OK. He got better and went home. Simple illustrations and text that I still can recite word for word today. It's hard to find preschool books on hospitalizations/operations so this was a good find. I highly recommend it for those 2-4. Probably too simple for kids any older than that.

This is the "value" alternative to Jane's Fighting Ships priced at about 1/3 of Jane's.As the title implies, it is a country-by-country list of navies presented in a compendium style -- ship classes have a tendency to be run-on, without much physical separation from one class to the next class -- often, photos do not appear on the same page as the class data/info, at least in the US section.Overall, it is an impressive work, which now is updated every 4-5 years. This 16th Edition may be updated 2018 or later.The Jane's series, now owned by IHS, a publicly traded for-profit company, has undergone price increases exceeding normal inflation -- the series is now published (still annually) for corporate and industry users with 2016 editions costing about $2,000 each.The original "Combat Fleets" was a French bi-annual publication, then translated to English under the editorial leadership of AD Baker (who also provided critical line drawings). My first edition is 1986/88 although there may have been a 1984 edition. Combat Fleets and Weyer's Warships (German based, although not certain if available after 2013/15 edition) remain the affordable "consumer" versions.

As a former norwegian navysailor, this book is, for me that is, a "must have".Much more userfriendly than I remembered the "Janes Fightingships of World" that we had on Our commandbridge.It is indeed one thing is a bit frustraiting to me. Some years ago, they gave out a CD.Rom Version. And it was cheaper, and less timeconsuming than the hardcover edition.I have not be abelm to find out why they do not make this option anymore.A grat suprise, an a positive so, was the price.I payed 206 USD, shipping included, and it arrived just one day to late.I think if I had bought it by Amazon UK or DE, it would had cost about 265 USD, but maybe I was lucky.If someone thinking og buying "Janes" I think you can tripple the price, at least.The last thing that is so cool With this kind of books, is that it does not only og trough the large fleets of the world.Even Samoa an Switzerland are representated here. Recently bought this for Christmas and have been delighted with it. As one other reviewer has said, it has 90% of the information that Jane's has. And for much, much less. It's a highly professional listing of the combat ships, their specifications, weapon systems, and is accompanied by clear black and white photographs.Can't recommend this book too highly.

If you have $1000 to spend on a naval encyclopedia, pass up Combat Fleets and pick up Jane's Fighting Ships. Since 9 out of 10 of us don't have that kind of discretion, Combat Fleets is perfectly adequate. It is wonderfully comprehensive. However, that can be a vice as well as a virtue. The harbor tug gets the same photo space as the frigate. While this may occasionally be useful, the major warships would be better served with larger format photos. The clarity of the black and white photos are also not particularly good. With your average smart phone being capable of taking a high resolution picture, it's vexing to put up with dark and poorly contrasted images. Still, the line drawings are generally good and well annotated. The editing suffers occasionally, such as when information is lost at a page break. This is somewhat forgivable given the tremendous volume of information provided. It is less forgivable that both versions of the LCS receive almost mirrored editorial comment. They are very different designs and should have been treated as such. With the beautiful full color shots of Jane's, the naval magazines, as well as widespread information and photographs available online, this book is not as appealing as it once was.

A very comprehensive, well organized reference book for all the world's navies. This is a treaure trove of information about the combat fleets of the world with a wide selection of photos and diagrams of individual vessels. This is a very worthwhile investment for anyone seriously interested in current naval affairs.

The best and most reasonably priced modern naval reference book ever. You won't regret buying this book.

Too many errors to recommend spending this much money. Disparity on the amount of technical information presented from one ship/country to the next. The pictures are good and the best you could ask for the price. With that I give this a solid 3/5 stars but would recommend spending more for Janes or simply looking around open sources to find specifics on whatever ship you want.

Husband requested this book for his birthday, he pores over it for days so it must be good.

Be aware that this is a literal pocket book - it's small enough to tuck into your pocket and take on the trail. The problem is the print is just too small to see easily and I needed a magnifying glass for some parts.Nonetheless, this is a handy little guide for the big ticket, must see stops and trails to hike. It includes lengths and rough estimates of time needed for each hike and what to expect in regard to terrain, elevation and difficulty.Most importantly, this guide covers the reality of the conditions in the Chihuahua desert and mountains. We're natives to the area and every single year there are batches of random tourists who fail to research and believe what they are told about water, animals, heat, vehicle ability and attention to your location and direction. We've rescued ten people over the years whose cars were poorly maintained, or not able to pass the dirt/rock/mud roads or just ran out of gas because they didn't believe what they were told. You can sit stranded for 24 hours or days without seeing another car or human. When it's 106 degrees and you are 30 miles of high desert from a community, you can die.We take ten gallons of extra gas, five gallons of water per heartbeat, a flare, food, portable shade, snake bite kit, and a first aid kit and two cans of fix a flat every single time we go home to Terlingua and Presidio. That's just our emergency supplies in our truck for the road. We've been stranded overnight between two highway washouts in a flash floods in June twice over the years. Go to Big Bend and revel in the magnificence of Mother Nature, be awed and be humbled. Show respect for the land.

This provided a nice guide to some of the trails. I purchased this in preparation for an upcoming trip and appreciate the "top 10 hikes" and other information about the area. It seems to focus on the high points rather than providing a deep comprehensive list of every trail in the parks. Once nice thing is that the book covers both the state and national parks which opened up some new ideas for me since I had been focusing on the National Park only.Although the size is nice and compact (not much bigger than your cell phone), the 5 point font (or whatever it is) is a bit hard to read if you're getting older like I am.

I used this guide to help plan a birding trip to Big Bend NP. While the focus of the book is not the NP specifically, it was a useful guide. It's written in a witty voice that makes it entertaining as well as informative.The book's divided into three sections. The first is general information for the park, things to bring with you, etc. The second section is the top 10 hikes in Big Bend NP and Big Bend Ranch State Park. The third section is itineraries for trips of various numbers of days.The book does not focus on the NP, so the hikes include several from the state park which is nearby" (a relative term in this gigantic area). The same goes for the itineraries -- they include the NP, the state park, the ghost town of Terlingua, historical sites, etc.A good guide and for the price worth getting even if you're only visiting the NP.

Certainly not the most complete book on the subject, but it fits in your back pocket and the writing is entertaining. Big Bend is truly one of the most amazing parks I've been to, this guide will help you squeeze the most out of it. Anything not included here can be easily supplemented at a Ranger Station in the park.

Only section of interest was short chapter on top hikes in region, however I could have gotten same info for free on the internet.Most of book was unrelated to the specific topic of Big Bend, such as how to pack for a hike or what are the wrong shoes for hiking.

I visited Big Bend on a bus tour, and was so impressed I am planning a week-long visit this spring. This guide covers all the important aspects of a Big Bend visit. Recommended hikes range from easy to hard. Kimball gives 2, 5 and 10 day long itineraries. The chapter on clothing is very accurate and thorough, so pay attention. I have a 4wd so I liked the descriptions of roads. Descriptions of points of interest are quite comprehensive given the small size of this book. Nearby points of interest are included, especially Big Bend State Park. Everything you want to know is there somewhere. If you only want one guide book this is the one. If you have never visited Big Bend, you'll want to after reading this book. Don't pass up this book because of its small size and price.

John Boyne is a variable author - some of his books are brilliant, some not so good. This one is in the first category. He uses a gay encounter to drive the narrative but this is NOT a gay book.Two volunteers training at Aldershot prior to being shipped to the front circa 1916 have a brief gay liaison which means more to one of them than to the other. At the front they experience very different destinies and the survivor returns home with letters written to the other by his sister which he arranges to return to the lady.The book skips between the past (the war) and the present, 1919 and the story unfolds. What is cowardice ? Do the peace- time rules and standards apply in war ? Who are we to judge what a person does in the madness of war ? All of the arguments are presented very subtly and it is a very good, if harrowing, read.I had always seen Pat Barker as the great WW1 writer; this is better than anything she has written.

This is my second Boyne novel and will definitely not be my last. Nothing is wasted in his writing; every word is essential. Although this can be construed as a heartbreaking story, it is constructed with such nuance that it never cloys.Another reviewer opined that the wrap-up was gratuitous. I cannot disagree more with that view. Seeing the characters in that last setting formed a perfect conclusion to the story at hand.John Boyne's voice competes with the best when it comes to expressing the sheer horror of war through the naive victims who bought into the same-old, same-old that seems to repeat itself ad nauseam.

Tragic story, beautifuly told. Have read a couple of Boyne's books now and find them incredibly readable, compelling.Captures more than anyone else the complex emotional uniqueness of a gay man's life, without dwelling on the physical aspect of relationships, which a lot of gay literature tends to do.It is difficult for us to imagine how it must have been in the era of this novel when gay life was further complicated by illegality, social and family rejection.But this story challenges on many other levels; survival and success in spite of social hippocracies and the twisted morality of war.

Other reviews have eloquently stated aspects that I would only be repeating about this book. I will just say it is the first book in a long long while that made me feel totally there. And by there I must try to explain -- in each characters being and in the author's mind at the same time. For probably the last 30 pages I hung on by my fingernails hoping against hope as I watched the words unfold before me like a theatrical experience that the ending would satisfy and it so did. I could not wait to tell a book loving friend about it, about my experiencing it. Yes, there is a gruesome war, there is homosexuality, there is mud and guts but how can I explain the writing, the heart, the quiet completeness of the lead character was all. I cannot, you must read it.

Have you ever read a book that so upset you, so pissed you off, that you kept thinking-well when I finish this; I am going to write to this author and give him a piece of my mind, and then you realize that the piece of your mind that you want to give him is that he has written a book-that has in it's transformative power, touched you at the most raw places in your mind and heart? Such was my experience with "The Absolutist" by John Boyne, an Irish writer most well known for his bestselling children's book "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." This is a book that is difficult to fit into a specific niche. Although there is a sexual relationship between two men, it can in no way be neatly packed away into the genre "Gay Literature." "A War Story", yes perhaps, but not one that hits you in the face like, let's say "All Quiet on the Western Front." No this writer is far too good for the direct hit approach; he instead relies on the slow sly systems used to write a good novel, the building of character and plot through action and description and suggestions. There is a scene in the book which I read through the veil of my tears where one knows that there can be no good outcome, but Mr. Boyne skillfully keeps you out there on the skinny branches, hoping against hope that something will happen that will change the probable consequences, but when the inevitable comes to fruition, you have the feeling of being sucker punched in the gut. At the end of the day, it can best be described as "A Morality Tale", but oh what a tale is told along the way. This is not a book that I will find easy to have in person discussions about, it took charge of a part of my heart that I am pretty sure will make it all but impossible to discuss without, quite frankly, losing it. I am an avid reader, averaging 40-50 books a year, and one of the reasons that I am compelled to keep reading as much as I do is that every once in a while something comes along that is so extraordinary, so thought provoking that it makes me realize that I have to reorganize my list of the best books that I have ever read. "The Absolutist" by John Boyne is such a book.

could not expect more from a book

A very helpful synopsis of the life of a nonprofit. Those looking to start one should buy this as a viable blueprint. The stages make a lot of sense and the details that support it are really good. There is some nice discussion about options when a nonprofit is in trouble and has to review and maybe renew its focus. Merging is a good option.Some good information is provided on staffing as well. At the beginning the budgets are very shoesting so its hard to expect many if any to draw a salary. But if people believe in a cause, a good nonprofit will survive.A very good book to start with.

As an executive director of a 7-year old nonprofit undergoing growth and the challenges inherent therein, this book has been an outstanding resource. It carefully, succinctly, and reassuringly reviews both the challenges and opportunities of the various life stages of a nonprofit. This book is a "must read" for all executive staff and Board members of small to medium size nonprofit organizations.

An excellent, accessible book that I frequently recommend to clients. Love the summary tables/charts. I liked it so much that I got the eBook version even though I have the paperback.
