As someone who was subjected to a husband who was a professional liar, I can say I truly appreciated the author's candor and willingness to appear "foolish." It's always easy to look in on something from the outside and make judgements, but from the inside the view is different. Her story paints her as REALLY ignorant and/or naive. That said, people like her so-called husband, are experts at creating environments where the victim doubts themselves and because outsiders often see through the rouse, the victim also become alienated. I appreciate her honestly with her story and I think it is not only interesting, but also, of real value to society as a whole. I certainly recommend her memoir and I am happy she felt compelled to share her story. Congratulations to the author on moving on with her life and the lives of her children. I wish you the very best.
THE BIGAMIST by Mary Turner Thomson is a fascinating first-hand account of a young, single mother who is courted by and married to what can only be labeled as a catfishing sociopath. Not only does this man have no conscience, uses classic gaslighting and isolation techniques of a narcissist, but also manages to drain her bank accounts and incurr tremendous debt in the process.Therefore, it is no big surprise that the story then ends up also being a tale of bigamy. Sort of like an ice cream sundae with nuts and a cherry on top, except decidedly less appealing and unenjoyable.Yet, Thomson somehow shows great strength of character and tenacity by not only surviving but thriving from this encounter.Most of the book's focus tells the tale of Thomson's online meeting of a man named William Allen Jordan. What then ensues is a wild-toad-ride-like courtship and marriage over a six year period filled with lots of grand drama, tall tales, and repeated disappearing acts.Once she learns there's another wife, Thomson then researches and lays out details of Jordan's life beginning in his teen years to the present.Sadly, the sociopathic patterns are all too evident from an early age, and the picture that ultimately emerges is simply astounding. Sociopaths, generally speaking, are quite grandiose. Even though Jordan gives the appearance of a humble man, he is boldly audacious with his lies and manipulations.Yet, ultimately this is a book about hope for survivors of this type of abuse, because Thomson doesn't spend her time wallowing in her pain. She faces the truth and resulting pain, grieves the loss, and finds a way to move forward with her three children--two of whom are Jordan's biological kids.Kudos to Thomson for risking the emotional exposure to go public. It has taken a great deal of courage. Many others suffering from close and personal contact with a sociopath can both learn from her experience, as well as her cautionary comments at book's end.
I too am a victim of marrying a bigamist. It's easy to judge when your not in the victims seat. I found this story fastenating. I am proud of this woman for picking up the pieces of her life and focusing on healing her family. My bigamist left a wife after she was in a terrible car accident. She was terribly injured and had to have her leg amputated. She and was left abandoned with three children. Of course, this is my story. You will love this woman's story and will be left in amazement unable to put it down.
This was an interesting book to read but rather slow at times. I had hope she would not have gone so much into details about him and the various lies he used to manipulate her and instead giving more details about how her family felt after coming to know him. Did their inner voice say, 'Run! As fast as you can. Get away from this man! Perhaps investigate more about some of the stories she was being told, etc. I am so sorry she had to go thru such a horrible experience and thrilled she is such a strong woman and her children are ok!
Bigamy is not a mainstream topic, but it is one that is worth examining. And, how brave the author is to share her story! Initially, the reader wonders how victims (and there were many) could be so naive, but as the book progresses, it’s obvious the sociopath bigamist is very good at mind control, twisting facts, and manipulating and molding people to fit his needs. I couldn’t put the book down.
OMG!! I can’t begin to tell you how phenomenal this book is. This lady endured soooo much in the 6 years of hell she lived in this Faust of a marriage. It’s horrific and terrifying to know people like him exist in this world. I highly recommend reading this lady’s account of the madness she lived and how she has triumphed to become the strong, gifted and remarkable woman she is today.
The story of this woman who during six long years was cheated and left penniless by her bigamist husband is nothing less than a horror story. Although we all know that love is blind, the fact that she kept selling all her posessions to fund the bigamist secret life leaves us pondering in life mysteries. The book is well written, but perhaps would benefit from including less story details and more reflections on what is going on. All in all it is a good description of the psychopath next door.
It's frightening to see how easily these men trap women in their web of deceit. I was duped (but fortunately refused to marry) a similar fellow. I lost a lot of money, but more importantly my self-respect at the hands of a slick-talker like Will/Bill. If you are in a marriage with a man who disappears (especially on holidays) and offers over-the-top reasons for his actions, pls read this book.
