This is Part 2 of Derrida's exploration of the ambiguity of giving. Part 1 (Given Time: Counterfeit Money, Univ. of Chicago Pr., 1992) weaves in and out of a Baudelaire prose poem on giving a beggar a counterfeit coin. Part 2 is more direct and reality-grounded, probably because its point of departure is an essay on history, religion, and responsibility by Jan Patov cka, Czech philosopher who died of a brain hemorrhage after police interrogation in March 1977. When confronted with the death of a scholar who gave his life because of his commitment to human rights, Derrida's readers will find the paradox of giving one's life-through death-somewhat precious. Derrida moves through texts from Emmanuel Levinas, Kierkegaard, the New Testament, and Nietzsche before ending with a passage from Baudelaire's art criticism, where he finds some of the same possibilities for double-reading a gift. Willis's model translation renders the text in clear English, with sufficient parenthetical French interpellations for readers to see where Derrida is playing on the gaps between the two languages. I've been an eager reader of Derrida since encountering Plato's Pharmacy in grad school. This second edition of Donner la Mort includes the essay Literature in Secret. Derrida is a notoriously difficult read, but rewarding; it may help to realize that he does not lay out a theory of philosophy, but rather performs philosophy. I found his exploration of the Abraham and Isaac story especially notable. In reading him, I always think of the carpenter's maxim: "measure twice, cut once."

Derrida's analysis of 'secret' is excellent, and a wonderful set up for his premise about the significance of death.Others have mentioned that a foundation of Heidegger would be helpful when reading this book, and I would agree. In this sense, I feel like Derrida here clarifies Heidegger's position about how Being Towards Death produces authenticity, but this could be because I read both for fun and didn't have any courses to guide me through.I really liked his analysis on the nature of subjectivity at the end. I'm not one to try to summarize an author's arguments in a review - I think the person can read the book him/herself and discover what is said, but I'm a fan of Derrida, and I believe this is his best work. I read Grammatology (yes, the whole thing, not the excerpts from Between the Blinds and in college courses), and really enjoyed it, and this may have influenced how well I enjoyed this work.

DON'T MISS THE HERMENEUTICAL GUIDE-STATEMENT ON PAGE "9". Derrida is best known as the "father of deconstructionism" for post-modern thought. But approaching this book from that narrow perspective would rob the reader of a great deal of significance in this work. This book truly is about "THE GIFT"; and that point should be honored. But the best key for understanding this manuscript is given to us by Derrida himself on page "9": "Even if that is not the case, nothing prevents us from putting a psychoanalytic reading of these words (Patocka's) to the test, at least on an experimental basis. This is Derrida's "philosophy of psychology", through the interpretive lens of Patocka. He willingly takes up this approach as an experiment because post-modern thinking has almost exclusively taken the subjective/psychological framework as their best model for articulation; usually consisting of an extreme leftist Hegelian framework. Derrida is a difficult thinker to absorb; but not impossible. He just has a style of compressing a great deal of significance in just a few pages. In this instance, I would suggest slowing-down your normal reading pace for scholarly work, in order to stay tuned to the author's evolving thought. This is "post-grad" material so don't expect less. This is one of the most strongly-balanced presentations I've seen in post-modern work; and from a date of 1995, which is a little ahead of the curve when its popularity began to rise. Derrida approaches from the depths of the "dark", the unconscious. Better wear your miner's hat with spotlight. The conversion experience takes place in the unconscious, not consciousness. This is a Christian presentation; but of the post-modern type. In fact the view actually proposes a reciprocal model consisting of: 1. orgiastic-aesthetics; 2. Platonic-rationalism; and 3. Christian-reversal. All three remain present to each other thoughout the workings of the hermeneutical circle, where the stage of "myth-morphic incorporation" continues to re-constitute the pre-linguistic self-consciousness. This myth-morphic stage is where the unconscious takes the "mystery" of conversion experiences and converts them into "secret", one that is internally posted as an objective representation (just not linguistic yet). Articulation of our responsible intentions of differentiation for the "GOOD" take place in consciousness. And ths is an articulation "before": 1. The "other"; 2. The "law"; and 3. The "self". Most of the specificity is before the "law" and consists of our deconstructions of the inauthenticity of technological society; and reconstruction using the three reciprocal "secrets" and their alliance with "responsibility". This great internal work by the self; who speaks from an internal dialogue between the unconsciousness and consciousness, posits the intention as "gift". This means a self-sacrifice that actually goes to the extreme of relinquishing all "possession" of the intention so that it can truly be self-actualized as an "incarnation" in the world. Take your time with this book and the reward will be overwhelming. I'm extremely impressed with Derrida n 1995. Easily a very appreciative "5" stars for boldly presenting such profound content.

You can give someone life--or you can put someone to death. But you cannot "give" someone their own death. Death is a "gift" because it insures our irreplaceableness in God's eyes; it is ours and ours alone. No one can die in my place no more than I can die in theirs. Our willingness to acknowledge this relationship with our own deaths (which above all requires "responsibility," a term Derrida seems to prefer to "faith") in turn unites us with God and the self, with the giver and the receiver.I'll admit I hadn't expected a deconstructionist to use terms like "absolute," "transcendant," "God," "self"--in profusion and in earnest. But perhaps Derrida has sufficiently exposed the instability, metaphoric basis and deceptive play of language to be able to employ it without qualifiers, disclaimers, and tedious textual self-referentiality. As is his custom, he represents his own work as a critique of others' works--Plato's "Phaedo," Nietzsche's "Genealogy of Morals," Kierkegaard's "Fear and Trembling," and the contemporary, politically executed Polish philosopher Jan Potocka. While he establishes his distance from Plato and Nietzsche, his re-visioning of Kierkegaard offers new angles without questioning or challenging the great Dane's existential reading of the Abraham-Isaac story. And his alignment with Potocka is so complete as to suggest more an apologia than a critique of the latter's work. Add to these texts numerous references to Heidegger and to both the Old and New Testaments as well as to stories by Poe and Hawthorne, and you'll have some idea of how richly allusive, not to mention dense, Derrida's discourse can be, even in a brief work such as this.The primary requisite for reading "The Gift of Death" is some knowledge of its precursor, "Fear and Trembling." Like Kierkegaard, Derrida defines religion as access to the responsibility of a free self, which in turn is defined as a relationship consciously and secretly experienced by the individual subject who sees him or herself in the gaze of God. Truth is separated from Socrates' truth by its interiority, by its replacement of reason, ethics, and aesthetics with the sheer horror of the abyss. Compared to Kierkegaard, however, Derrida's account is less romantic, less inspiring, more disturbing. The leap of faith involves not a sacrifice of Isaac but of oneself, a secret and senseless meeting with one's own death. Derrida interprets the absence of woman in the Abraham and Bartleby stories as proof that the "knight of faith's" quest is not the "tragic hero's". Instead, it is beyond all knowledge, a confrontation with the abyss that marks the Absolute singularity of the self. (This latter observation is reminiscent of Marlowe's inability, or unwillingness, in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness," to share the "truth" of Kurtz' final words, "The horror, the horror," with Kurtz' fiance.)In the latter part of his critique, Derrida offers a paradoxical criticism of the technological, modern age. Far from becoming quantified or de-naturalized, we have returned to the demonic and orgiastic from which religion arose. Modern man has fallen into inauthenticity, becoming not a self or person but assuming the mask of a "role." Present-day democracy, in turn, is not about the equality of individuals but of roles. Hence the importance of discovering and accepting the gift of death that determines human uniqueness. Responsibility is the criterion; freedom is the result.This is a work not to be read quickly or only once. Derrida moves slowly, taking two steps backward before moving one step forward, but his method insures the communication of his meanings. If it's any inducement to the reader, I would suggest that the fourth and final chapter, "Tout autre est tout autre," is anticlimactic and unhelpful. By then the attentive reader will already have located the gift.

Derrida impresses again with a magnificent display of his analysis on language, the concept of writing, and the deconstruction in the field of phenomenology.

Each of these serviceable studies in the Historical American Biographies series imparts a relatively detailed overview of its subject's life, works, distinctive outlook, and character. Of the two, Thoreau makes drier reading, as McCarthy is given to name-dropping and extraneous details. He does, however, include a discussion of Thoreau's enduring influence, along with brief passages that capture the flavor of his writing, and refreshingly frank descriptions of him by contemporaries. Like Thoreau, Remington is presented as a maverick with a yen to wander, who died young and at the height of his creative powers. But unlike Thoreau, he was an outgoing, robust sort, who achieved almost immediate fame as soon as he turned to art full-time. Both books are sturdily supported by endnotes, plus lists of print and Web resources, but their black-and-white illustrations of old photos and prints are poor in quality, and Remington mentions many works that are not illustrated at all. Bertrang shares unique true stories that demonstrate the versatility and advantages of owning a properly designed whole life insurance policy—as they applied in actual events and not just the theory. Unlike other excellent books on whole life insurance (like those written by Nelson Nash and by Kim D. H. Butler) that do an amazing job of educating the reader on the subject, this book pulls the reader in at a much more personal and relatable level. It still educates the reader, but via a different angle. Well written! I highly recommend and enjoyed the audiobook, which Bertrang narrated himself. The tone and tempo of his voice was perfect. Warning: if you will be driving while listening to this book, be aware that there may be times when your eyes may fill with tears. Again, awesome book! Highly recommend!

I’ve long understood the NUMBERS of life insurance; this book speaks to the HEART. Kindle version includes half a dozen significant and annoying textual errors (two or more paragraphs completely mixed up and words missing so you have no idea what the author intended to say. . . . Skip over a paragraph or two, and you’ll pick up the trajectory soon enough. Despite those frustrations, the rest of the book is well worth reading if you want to know what life insurance is all about.

GREAT...GREAT READ!! I purchased this book as it was written by a son of my dear friends, Myron and Marlene Bertrang. I coudn't put it down.It is well written and make sure you have a highlighter pen handy as there are words of wisdom to remember. What a great gift for a young couple just starting out and also young families. I am a senior citizen and found many points of interest which are beneficial for me. Such an easy read. I especially enjoyed Mark's interest stories.

So glad I purchased this book. What a great way to share the importance of life insurance, how it affects us down the road and the many choices we have. All this without it being dull or feeling like I was in, "Life Insurance 101." I am buying a copy for both of my children who are in their 20's and may not understand why you need to think ahead. What I enjoyed most about the book is how the stories touched the heart and soul of why we take care of our loved ones while we can.

You learn how to apply financial principles and products to your life through the touching and (warning) sometimes heartbreaking real life stories Mark shares. Unique and highly recommended.I especially recommend listening to the book on audible. Mark was a radio guy before he got into life insurance, and he narrates this book like the pro he is. The book has heart as well as many financial tips, examples and metaphors that will help you understand whole life insurance and it’s value.

This sequel describes what happened to sixth-grader Jesse, the narrator of the original title to this series, right where that story left off. As before, this is a text novel, seasoned with just a few illustrations. Once again, Jesse has found himself in the eponymous dilemma. Yet I must commend the author for the variation he came up with this time, which pays obvious homage to what was, at one point, a wildly popular augmented-reality game.Three other characters from the prior volume have returned, including one whose fate was left up in the air in Book One, and it was satisfying for me to find Jesse and his companions seeking to resolve that character's predicament. This volume is relatively brief, action-packed (seemingly more so than the first book), suspenseful, funny, and meant to appeal to late-year elementary-school readers.No need for excessive detail or exact logic; I could fill those in for myself whenever I felt the need arise. The aim is to just have fun with the story. While there was no gross-out element as in the original, one scenario involving a credit card no doubt proved awkward for one character -- a bizarrely inventive look at what immersion into virtual reality makes possible. The end turned out to be far more a cliffhanger on this occasion.

Bought this in advance. Arrived the day we were having our family Christmas. I sneaked it under the tree during supper. He was SO excited to get it, has read it twice in the week since.

My 12 year old loved this series. He read both books in about 2 days. I hope more in the series come out, soon. We'll be watching for them. =)

My 9 year old really likes this series. He is NOT a reader. I have to fight with him to read. Not saying I still don't have to...but he actually seems to like this series enough to not fight as much when doing his reading homework. I recommend it for anyone with a little boy who hates to read.

These books are awesome! I was looking for something to read to my third grade class for fun at the end of the year. They loved these!! The books are just a really fun and funny quick read. My kids couldn't wait to hear what would happen next.

Now I know why this is a classic. Thought I'd give some of the classics a try and picked this one. I think they made a Disney movie of it but I never saw that one. So I didn't know what to expect. Was very pleasantly surprised, great characters and an exciting story that had me hooked right from the start and kept me reading late a couple of nights as I had to know how it would turn out. I'll be checking out the author's other works as well.

This was one classic I just didn't get around to reading for the longest time -- I was familiar with its premise and had even seen bits and pieces of the mediocre Jackie Chan film based on it, but never actually read it myself. Ironically, I ended up finally picking up the book on a trip of my own, and read it on the plane. And while it comes across as a travelogue of its era at times, it's an entertaining story nonetheless, and a testament to one man's determination to traverse the globe in 80 days.Phileas Fogg is a practical, logical man with very predictable habits... so it comes across as a shock to both his newly hired servant, Passepartout, and the gentlemen's club he belong's to when he takes up a wager that will have him seeking to circumnavigate the world in no fewer than 80 days! With the long-suffering but eager to please Passepartout and a lovely Indian woman in tow, Fogg sets out to circle the world by train, steamship, elephant, sled, and any other means he can. But his journey is not without its mishaps or complications... the worst being a detective who suspects the journey is a ploy by Fogg to get away with a crime, and seeks to stop his journey at all costs...The writing in this book can come across as a little stilted, especially to modern-readers. I attribute this partly to the common writing style of the time period and partly to the fact that this book is a translation -- often writing styles get lost in the shift from one language to the next. The story still manages to move at a fairly steady pace, though occasionally it gets bogged down in odd places. The story comes to a screeching halt at one point to deliver a history of the Mormon church in Utah, for example -- interesting, but hardly pertinent to the story -- and at other points pauses to make copious notes about the geography and architecture of wherever they happen to be. This makes it come across almost as a travelogue at times.Fogg is a hard character to get to like at first -- so logical and seemingly without feeling that he's hard to relate to. His valet, Passepartout, is a much more relatable character, a hapless everyman dragged along in his master's footsteps but still willing to please. And as the story progresses Fogg reveals a warmer side to his personality, and gradually shows himself to be heroic as well as determined and not without sympathy toward others. And even Fix, the detective doggedly pursuing Fogg and his servant, is shown to be a decent character just trying to do justice as he sees it. The Indian woman who travels with them for much of the trip has little personality of her own, though -- she seems tossed in just to serve as a romantic interest. Ah well.Also, a few bits included in this book are a little harsher in hindsight. An offhand remark about the number of bison blocking the train tracks and wishing they could just shoot them all can make the reader wince when they realize that bison were nearly driven to extinction in just such a manner...While a little dated and slow to start, "Around the World in 80 Days" is still an entertaining adventure story, and while today one can traverse the world in a much shorter time, this is still a fascinating look at how it was done in centuries' past. And it's certainly a LOT better than the Jackie Chan film...

A much enjoyed classic of Jules Verne. Though, I have found Butcher translations of Verne not the best version of translations. Butcher , in my opinion, does not ‘hold true’ to basic commonly used verbiage. He uses MANY words when he could have and should have used fewer. (In other words, he is long winded). Again, this is just my opinion on That topic. On the whole, a very very good book .

This is the original version with a few corrections in grammar or spelling.I bought this to compare it to Michael Todd's movie of the same name. An informational video I had seen about the movie made some extravagant claims, so I bought this to check out those claims. Todd had wanted the cast as you see them because they fit Verne's description. The book proved that. Todd had wanted most everything that the book has (all of the story line). It does. Then on top of that, the story is truly wonderful. It is upliftting and fun at times, and harrowing and suspenseful at others. I was very pleased with this book. You will be too, especiallyu if you've seen Michael Todd's production of this in his 1950s movie. Hell. Buy this book and buy the movie too. Both are delightfully entertaining!

FYI: There are TWO free public domain editions of this wonderful Jules Verne novel currently available in the Kindle Store. One is under the most common title AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS and is translated by George Makepeace Towle (though his name does not always appear and, in error, is sometimes listed as "anonymous"); the other -- this one -- is under the less common title 'ROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DAYS and is translated by Henry Frith. Both are technically accurate (enough) renderings of Verne's French into the English language, but Towle's version is a tad smoother and easier to read than Frith's whose English syntax tends to be occasionally stilted and choppy. Therefore, I would advise any prospective reader of this public domain freebie by Frith to still download it, but to ALSO download the other free public domain version (that is by Towle but not identified as such); read the first few pages of each and decide which of the two you will wish to continue reading from start to finish. I strongly suspect you will prefer Towle (5-stars) over Frith (4-stars). But whichever one you choose, Verne's tale is terrific, and for more than a few pleasant hours you will find yourself vicariously traveling around the world with Phileas Fogg and Passepartout.

What a wonderful book on Reiki! Brooke was my Reiki teacher a couple years ago, and was just amazing...learning Reiki from her was one of the best experiences of my life and it changed me in many profound ways. So when I saw that she had written a book I was so happy. I just loved reading this and it refreshed my love for Reiki. It contains a brief and simple explanation of Reiki, enough to let you know if you would like to learn more, and it also contains some beautiful wisdom for anyone (interested in learning Reiki or not) on how to live more peacefully and happily. The book feels very soothing and peaceful and knowing Brooke, that is because it is infused with her essence...she truly "walks her talk" and is one of the kindest and most loving people I know. So if you you want to learn the basics of Reiki, enough to know if you would like to learn more and get an attunement, I strongly recommend this book. And if you DO decide to learn Reiki, there is no better teacher out there to learn from than Brooke!
