What can I say? Steve Jackson Games offer well-organized books, but they dropped the ball here. Sure it's organized, but compared to vehicle rules in previous editions, this one is very light in variety. The book indeed helps you flesh out a spaceship, but lacks flavor and functionality compared to 3rd edition. The book is very thin, offering little that wasn't already mentioned in the Campaigns Core Rule Book. If I were you, I would buy the 3rd edition vehicles book and simply apply what is offered in that book to the 4th edition vehicle rules.
Not a bad book for the price point, I am happy with it. Just a little overly simplified, maybe too much. Should have been titled GURPS 4th ed. Spaceships Lite.GURPS is about detail, and I feel this gave up to much of that for ease of use.I'd like to see a more in-depth 4th ed Spaceships book come out later with the bolt-on-modularness that this book has, just with more of the minutia that makes GURPS what it is.
GURPS Spaceships distills complex technologies down to very simple, basic, gameable components. After gaining a grasp of the ship construction system, one can pretty quickly emulate just about any spaceship from the Apollo mission capsule to the Discovery One to Babylon 5 or a Star Destroyer. Heck, you could even build the Corvette landing craft at the opening of the film Heavy Metal. The book also boasts an abstract combat system which allows characters to use their skills to contribute to the mission at hand even if they aren't gunners. Follow-up PDF books in the Spaceships line available from Steve Jackson Games add specific detail that can be helpful, but is not at all strictly necessary. Some of these include Spaceships 3: Warships and Space Pirates, Spaceships 5: Exploration and Colony Spacecraft, and Spaceships 7: Divergenet and Paranormal Tech. GURPS Spaceships makes an excellent companion to GURPS Space, which is to space-oriented games what GURPS Fantasy is to that genre.
