Wow! Superbly written and a must read. So many women were truly, brave pioneers, in a time when they were persecuted for living outside the realms of "the social norm". History doesn't give these women the recognition they deserve.Nora, was a woman with a story that needed telling. While a work of fiction, this book sheds light on the fact that in the early 1900's and even still, the work of many intelligent women is credited to a man. The characters in this work are multifaceted and their lives complicated. I loved reading of their journey through this world, way back when and now. I am thankful for every woman who lived, or lives, her life, her way! Thank you Lynn Ames for another great, read!

Lynn Ames never disappoints. Love historical romances. A present day story looking back at history. Why did we never learn about all the amazing women that throughout time have made such a difference to our present? Thanks for bringing this story to life. I look forward to more storylines based on historical facts.

I love that this was three stories woven together in an expert way that was brought to a profound conclusion. Much more than an average lesbian romance. The history is real and palpable, even if the characters are fiction. I feel this book is a movie in the making. Who is feeling it with me?

Once again Ames hits it out of the park. All of her books are excellent but the ones mixed with history are most wonderful. I am so glad that her historical fiction is correct except for the major characters.

This was a really well written book. If a sequel comes will definitely purchase it. One of my all time favorites.

This is one that I will read again

Anyone who uses the word "disapprobation" in a book has my vote. And I laughed out loud when I read, "...as subtle as a bear at a landfill".These things considered, this book is quite serious and it's a book that has not just a great plot, not merely fully fleshed-out, realistic characters and a two solid love stories in one, but it asks the reader to understand that there are things we weren't taught in school. We weren't taught in school about Oak Ridge, TN and what went on there in the 1940's and we weren't taught about the Calutron Girls. I personally didn't know about these things until just a few years ago. The pity is that we aren't taught about the fact that women have been holding this country together since the USA became a country. This is the message Lynn Ames drives home in this book.Nora Lindstrom has just turned 100 years old, and she is dying. Her great niece, Dr. Diana Lindstrom gets a call from Nora's attorney that her great aunt Nora needs her now, years after Diana was told that had Nora died. Diana can't believe her beloved great aunt is still alive!Brooke Sheldon is Nora's nurse and long-time friend. She is completely devoted to Nora.Diana arrives at Nora's cottage and she and Brooke meet and discover their attraction to each other under the worst of circumstances. There is another gift, though, and that gift is that Diana gets to spend time with her Aunt Nora, and she learns that Nora once had a love of her own, one that was taboo at the time.No description I can give is good enough do justice to this story. Ames has a way about her writing that draws you in (I finished this book at about 1:30 this morning) and doesn't let you go until the last sentence. The end of this book will leave you in a puddle of tears. If you are an Ames fan, this book will be a great addition to your bookshelf. If you're unfamiliar with her work, this book is a good place to start enjoying all her works!Another plus we have come to expect from Lynn Ames is that this is an absolutely flawlessly edited book. Ames has spoiled me for so many other authors, because she cares that her readers are intelligent and expect perfection, and she cares that her books are a reflection of this.

“Chain Reactions” finds elderly scientist Nora Lindstrom forced, in the face her own mortality, into contacting her long-estranged family. Her great-niece, Diana, convinced her aunt has been dead for twenty years, nevertheless responds to the plea from Nora’s lawyer and visits her beloved aunt, Diana’s inspiration for becoming a scientist and so much more. Shocked into the reality that her parents have lied to her for 35 years, Diana must quickly adapt to both the reappearance and frailty of her aunt as they begin to explore their new relationship. The 100-year-old Nora needs live-in care Diana can’t provide but her scheming doctor introduces them to Brooke, a burnt-out paediatric nurse who has taken refuge nearby to heal her pain from losing too many cancer patients. Between them, Brooke and Diana care for the wilful old lady, supporting her fading strength and indomitable spirit, and in so doing both become fascinated by the history Nora has been part of, and the unspoken sacrifice of an inspirational woman.Lynn Ames’ multi-layered romance presents us with a modern-day pathos, an ancient mystery, a slice of untaught history, and a poignant parallel between the generations. Nora is a classic representation of her era; stoic, realist and patriot, who stepped up when called by her country, proud to have served her part, yet plagued by the responsibility for her actions and ultimately sacrificing her own personal happiness as a consequence. Modern-day Diana has taken a similar route, putting medical research above a private life, and Brooke, the more empathic of the three, has made a comparable sacrifice, giving her energy to the care of others. As the two younger women discover Nora’s personality and uncover her history, they inevitably form a bond, and despite the strain of the situation, lay the foundation for a tense friendship. As the strain of Nora’s final days grows, Diana and Brooke are drawn together, and Nora’s final wishes will push them both into a new reality. These are three powerful women, exquisitely drawn, each with strength and sadness, each having chosen a path that has put their career first at the cost of personal happiness. Ames cleverly reveals them through the medium of their interaction and their exploration of each other, showing us their hidden pain as they are laid bare on the page. Nora, atoning for her self-imposed guilt, a huge figure in the fight against leukaemia, Diana, battling to find a cure for epilepsy and Brooke, caring for frequently terminal leukaemia patients, each has given their individual strength to the battle they have chosen.Love suffuses the pages of this romance, love for family however distant, love that hasn’t faded despite the years, and love that grows even through the tension of caring for a dying relative. Nora’s love of her great-niece is a powerful force that neither Diana nor Brooke can ultimately withstand.Emotional, poignant and touching, “Chain Reactions” will pull your heart strings every which way, leaving you bereft by Nora’s loss, awed by her history, yet buoyed by the overwhelming sense of hope that Diana and Brooke might not repeat her mistakes. Lynn Ames has the ability to pull a historical thread and bring it alive through her characters, women we cannot help but fall in love with. I guarantee you won’t put it down, and I cannot wait for the prequel.
