Review

“Molecules and Medicine is a fascinating introduction to the convergence of chemistry and physiology, and to the emergence of the science of molecular medicine.” (The Nucleus, January 2010) "Molecules and Medicine is extremely well organized and integrates history, chemistry, biology, and pharmacology of drug development seamlessly." (The Quarterly Review of Biology, September 2008) "…I find this to be a useful book for somemone teaching a biochemistry class.  Use of examples and information from Molecules and Medicine should make material in lectures seem more relevant to students and assist motivation for learning." (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Education, May/June 2008) "This is a treasure trove of information about molecules as medicines." (Education in Chemistry, May 2008) "Molecules and Medicine is an engaging book that takes the reader into the world of small molecule clinical therapeutics and how they are discovered and used to improve health." (CHOICE, March 2008) "…numerous colorful illustrations that help to explain the various topics covered make it easy and interesting reading." (ChemBioChem, March 2008)

Bought a hard copy several years ago and have found it very useful so also bought this for my ipad/kindle, June 2014. The text is written by Corey's team (nobel prize winner 1990?)The Kindle edition has a few typos in it that are not there in the paperback - a shame b/c John Wiley could have created the Kindle edition without the typos creeping in, given that the text already exists in an electronic format and typo free. An example "Drugs Acting on the Nervoes System"This book is broken down into therapeutic areas (TAs). If you are new to drug discovery some of TAs have a brief primer on the underlying biology, which is helpful. The level of detail is good - a history of the molecule, mechanism of action, and the key features of its chemistry. The structures are nicely done and some basic reactions and mechanisms are shown. The electronic version does not have any smiles format for the structures. The references are useful if you want to drill down further. The kindle version has links in the references but they don't really take you to the journal - maybe one day they will :-)For someone interested in medicine and how drugs are created, without any science background at all, will have a tough time working through the text which is technical. A basic understanding of pharmacology will really help because while the book is technical, it is very readable and an excellent primer on the history of medicinal molecules! I also think for anyone taking these medications for chronic conditions this should be required reading - okay okay - a stretch goal!!Hey Corey et al, have the publishers fix the typos!

This is a book for anyone with a little background in chemistry to a lot who is interested in how submicroscopic entities, molecules, are biologically active and are being used as medicine. The first chapter on chemical bonding and molecular structural formulas gives a good introduction or review for students. The rest of the book focuses on the molecules that constitute modern pharmaceuticals, their structure and activity. The book is organized to make it easy to find medicinal molecules based on there uses. The writing is concise and informative, and the illustrations are excellent. I recommend this book to students interested in medical fields and anyone interested in the molecular aspect of popular medicines. A truly excellent book!

Straight forward, "what you need to know" type textbook. Well written and very informative. All of the pictures used are useful and not there to just make things look pretty.

Is an excellent text book with valuable contribution to organic chemistry and their apply in medical issues. I recommend this book as a text guide for professionals in this area.

This is an excellent production. Well writen and illustrated. My only criticism is that the one page allotted to most of the molecules in the book is a little skimpy - at least for a chemist. Otherwise I think it is an excellent introduction for those with some chemistry background and certainly for undergraduate chemistry majors or even the better premeds.

"Molecules and Medicine" is a great little book, especially for those interested in how drugs work at the molecular level. I read the hardbound 2007 version. Each section covers a drug category, such as immunosuppressive agents or antibiotics. After the section introduction, each page in the section covers one drug. The book also has an overall intro section, basically a primer on organic chemistry and proteins. The approach is molecular, and is quite insightful and useful. It shows and discusses how the drugs actually work, at the molecular level. Illustrations clearly show how the drug reacts with the particular enzyme or other molecule it affects. You need some background to get the most out of this book. But I think it would be interesting for just about anyone to browse through. The authors intentionally wrote the book to appeal to a broad audience, and I think they largely succeeded.

This is really a very interesting book that touches on some important aspects of drugs while covering the real breakthroughs in this field. The individual summaries on each of the drugs are very helpful, though brief and thus incomplete. However, you really do need a background in organic chemistry and biology to get the most out of it-- the book is oddly accessible and out of read at the same time.

With the level of interest in pharmaceuticals never being higher, this timely contribution is a home run. This is a must for organic and medicinal chemists and for anyone who wants obtain accurate information on important drugs.
