Just what I needed - a how-to book that can stay in the shop next to my lathe. The cover is rubberized and should be easy to keep smudge-free. The writing style is typical pre-war American - every reader must be a young man starting his apprenticeship in the machine-shop trade, and therefore will benefit from helpful guidance in the areas of workplace neatness, respect for authority, comportment, and hygiene. All that aside, it provides an easy to comprehend picture of what a lathe is all about and how to bring out its capabilities. I'm an old man just starting out my golden years with a 1966 Mori Seiki engine lathe, and with no prior machine shop knowledge I should be able to do well with this book showing the way.

I'm coming at this facsimile book (originally published in the 1940's) from the standpoint of an "old school" machinist who learned mechanical drawing and lathe operation in the 60's, and it's a good fit. It covers most of the ways to use a lathe with clear prose, mechanical-style line art, and black and white photos retouched to print clearly. Those features alone put it a few steps above many of the other machine-shop books. It should be emphasized that the tooling shown in the photos and illustrations is pre-war, but the terminology is unchanged. So a tool post or a live center or a crossfeed may look more rounded off or more baroque than the same part on a modern mini-lathe, but they all work the same way. Mainly, the standards are unchanged. There are plenty of conversion charts (metric-decimal inch-fractional inch) and gear formulae for threading setups. And we still need them. I highly recommend the book.

As a metal lathe novice, I've read several books oriented toward the home machine shop market. These books tend to feature modern machines and tooling, yet time and time again, the bit relevant to my immediate problem turns out to be a couple of vague snippets that seem to be drawing on prior knowledge I do not possess. Whenever I learn something truly useful, it has been information I find in the old South Bend book. The bulk of this book is available online for free, but for $5 you can get a printed and bound paper book that surely looks as good as the book ever did.The book features old machinery and talks about solving old mechanical problems, but I have often found information from the '40s to be really useful for focusing on the core fundamentals of mechanical things. The fundamentals haven't changed, but everything is cluttered up with extra complexity now. This old book drills past all that, and has been greatly helpful to me on my journey.

With an inexpensive reprint like this available, I see no reason to read the darned thing as a .pdf on my computer. Much more enjoyable this way, and it is also easier to carry out to the lathe when I feel like it. I only wish someone offered a similar-quality, similarly-priced reprint of the Atlas Manual of Lathe Operations. Kudos to Martino Publishing.

I wish I would have known about this book when I bought my lathe 3yrs ago. I've learned a LOT on YouTube but I would have obsorbed even more if I'd read this book first. This ranks up there with the best manuals I've ever read as it doesn't read like a manual :)

I was hesitant to purchase this review book in fear it wouldn't cover the material on the actual CEN exam. However, this book was an amazing study guide. In fact a question in the review book was on the exam, almost word for word. I'd recommend this book to anyone studying for the CEN exam. It provids tons of difficult questions that truly preps you for test day. The authors did a great job and allowed me to pass my CEN!

The best way to study for an exam is practice questions with rational. The book has this down pat, however many questions throughout the book are poorly written or just plain wrong. I remember losing my mind on a math/drip calculation question that didn’t provide the correct answer!! Many questions are in a section that has nothing to do with the section at all. I think overall the book was worth the money but still has several flaws which could have been easily corrected with better editing before release.

I've been recommending this book to everyone that asks me about CEN prep for the past year so I figured it was time to write a review. I used this question book and the ENA prep course PowerPointa to study and felt I was adequately prepared. The questions in this book are difficult, but I felt they were very comparable to the difficulty level of the exam.

I pretty much used only this book to study for the exam and I passed it on the first time. I like the format and the questions were very relevant. I really recommend this book for anyone trying to pass the CEN.

Very helpful and in sections for those looking to review for their CEN exam.

I purchased this as an educator for my nurses to use to prepare for their CEN course. Only one has take the course and he passed, He said that the book did help him.

I LOVE Miller's 1st edition of her book. It was the best little grammar book I have ever taught with. I am not sure why she moved the pre-pop quizzes. They originally were at the front of every chapter, where before you dove into the chapter, you could get a sense of where you were or what you knew. Now the tests are in the back.--------I have updated my initial 3 stars to 5 after Ms. Miller responded to my comment (see my response to her below). Now that I know the 2nd edition of the BLGBE has a companion workbook all problems are solved!

As a relatively new writer I had not previously read any of Arlene Miller’s work as ‘The Grammar Diva’. I needed to have one place where, as I wrote something, I could quickly check that odd sentence or punctuation that just did not look or sound correct. On a recommendation from a friend, I bought The Best Little Grammar Book Ever! second edition. After using this book I am at once impressed at the simple, to the point structure and relieved that I no longer have to work hard and waste a lot of time to resolve my on-the-fly grammar questions. Like any writer, I want to focus on the story and not researching technical errors. I would heartily recommend The Best Little Grammar Book Ever as a super choice for anyone that is in need of a quick, intuitive grammar source.

This little grammar book is indeed a small treasure. Arlene Miller is a master of the conversational approach to clarifying the sticking points of grammar and everyday usage, making the book an enjoyable read. I'll keep this on my desk for quick everyday reference.

Since this was her 2nd edition, she refined it, makes it easier to find what you want in chapters, more help with word usage we ponder and wonder about, yet don't know what to do... , I noted the quizzes are gone ( thanks, my test anxiety was bad) and she says she's coming out with an separate final quiz / workbook... We all know how words and phrases are changing how we interact and communicate with each other, so she works to make it easier for us too, I appreciate that. If you're like me, words come out of your mouth, and you know they're not the ones you want, but you don't know what they might be, Arlene helps in a nice way, not nasty teacher to student way. Data Science for Business is an ideal book for introducing someone to Data Science. The authors have tried to break down their knowledge into simple explanations. I am skeptical of non-technical Data Science books, but this one works well.In the beginning we are shown the motivations for Data Science and what fields they apply to. Some examples include movie recommendations, credit card charges, telecom churn rate, and automated analysis of stock market news. The book avoids going into the highly technical parts of creating the system but gives you links for where to go.They do not really reveal the whole Data Science stack. For example Hadoop was mentioned as an implementation of MapReduce but they said going into Hadoop configuration would be too detailed for this type of book. I tended to agree, and even being a progammer myself, I thought they made the right choice to leave that out.Where the book shines is in the explanations. I am very familiar with expected value calculations and there was a chapter on this. It was a much better high level discussion than I have seen elsewhere, and they mentioned possible pitfalls of the expected value framework.I liked that the emphasis was on deciding what problem to solve in Data Science. The title of the book is appropriate as it is not just about analyzing data, but figuring out the business case. If you are new to Data Science or looking to get a high level overview this book is an great place to start.

I thought this would be an easy argument to make during the interview process, but in the end I had to develop a less academic-sounding argument for the interviews. It’s also the right choice if you want to understand data science from a strategic perspective and its process characteristics. Provost and Fawcett is extremely useful for anyone who is trying to get up to speed and demonstrate knowledge in business analytics or data science in relatively short manner. This text is extremely well written—the authors use non-technical language for the most part—and it’s interesting!

This isn't really a book about the business applications of data science. Instead it has some businessy sounding bits and the start and end which feel like an afterthought. The middle seems like it was taken from a data mining textbook (or perhaps previously was one). Particularly strangely, it presents some math for machine learning but in a dumbed down way using notation the author invented (the strangest was a replacement for sigma as sum notation).Rather than reading this you're probably better off reading a book about how business might be impacted by machine learning and related things (The Second Machine Age or Average is Over). Alternatively, if you want to know more about data science / data mining (now fairly deprecated term this book uses) or machine learning you'd be better off picking up Hastie's or Mitchell's book or taking Andrew Ng's course on Coursera.

When trying to learn about a new field, one of the most common difficulties is to find books (and other materials) that have the right "depth". All too often one ends up with either a friendly but largely useless book that oversimplifies or a heavy academic tome that, though authoritative and comprehensive, is condemned to sit gathering dust in one's shelves. I like this book, for me its an easy and fun read. For me it was almost like I was reading a portion of my mind and agreeing with most of what it said. Note that I was a senior taking intro to Communication though.(I took Japanese and it counted as a Comm, I switched my major and Intro to Comm was needed for that new major) So it may be the case that these things developed into me and I found it easier to read. Always try to answer those choice points after you read a section, it should help you remember what you read.

I purchased this book with the MyCommunicationLab code because I needed it for my class.Turns out amazon is selling these books with invalid/expired codes so you'll have to spend another $30 for the MyCommunicationLab code from the actually pearson website.... Just buy to book without the code and save yourself time and money......

Received an “Examination Copy”; I’m a senior in high school, freshman in college. I needed this textbook for a Speech course and I wasn’t sure if this would do, but after I looked at all of the course assignments the book matched the assignments just fine. Also, it was in perfect condition.

So much better than the paper version! Study was made easy, with the ability to search key words and browse topics. I will never buy a paper text book again. Joseph DeVito does a great job with this book. I probably never would have enjoyed my class though if it wasn't for my amazing speech professor Jeff at Centralia College.

My boy can't get enough of these magic school bus books. They are cleverly written with layers of detail, allowing you to make it a long read or a quicker read. I couldn't ask for a better way to make him look forward to kindergarten (although he will be disappointed when they don't have magical adventures!) And as a PhD scientist and former science teacher, I have not yet found an error in a dozen books. For the sticklers, they even debunk the pretend parts of the story at the end. This electricity one is great, and the senses one is superb (but long). My only quibble is that with the paperbacks, the pages soon fall right out. But they're good enough to tape em all back up!

If you have a kid who's into electricity, this is a great book. My son just turned 4 and LOVES this book. I omit some of the portions (like the detailed explanation of an electromagnet), but we'll get there as he gets older. Just as a side note, if your child is really into electricity, also get the book "Wired," which explains electricity in a different way. The two books have little overlap and complement each other well. I got Wired for my son when he'd just turned 3 and, despite the high-tech nature of it, he was enthralled for the 20 minutes it took to read it!

I got this book because my kids had questions about electricity that I didn't know the answers to. This book is captivating for my 4 year old, intriguing to my 6 year old, and a learning experience for mom! It's written like the show, they know all the characters and love the mini lessons that put together the bigger picture about what electricity is.

I love how well magic school bus books explain things! My five year old is obsessed with electricity and this book is a new favorite!

My five year old daughter and I love all these Magic School Bus books. I am a research scientist and my daughter spends a lot of time with me while I work. She loves learning new things from these books and gets a special kick out of it when I learn something new along with her. I highly recommend these books to anyone with small children.

My son started reading this series at school, he was so interested i've kept buying the next book and he loves reading them. Great book series!

Last year I introduced my grandson to The Magic School Bus series and he's enjoyed every single book. However, this is his very favorite. It has sparked his curiosity and he and his electrical engineer grandfather have had long discussions ranging from amps to Ohms. We followed up with a snap-together circuit set for Christmas and he loved that, too. The Magic School Bus books make science and exploration fun.

I really enjoyed this cookbook, both as a look into the complexity of Italian food (obviously Rome specifically) and the sense of history it also imparts. I think that in America we often get the super sanitary grocery shelves, bright lighting, and carts when we go shopping. It is nice to see the old-school variety of bodegas and grocers who have been around forever. These are well depicted in the bright pictures as well as the recipes are kept pretty simple. Definitely roused my interest about delving further into the food, it brought a lot of things to the fore that I had never thought about as food options.I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review.

Oh no, another Italian cookbook! However, this one is unique in having some uncommon recipes as well as fascinating background information. The authors, Katie Parla and Kristina Gill, are expats who live and work in Italy: Katie as a food journalist and guide and Kristina as a food editor and freelance photographer. Researching the cuisine of Rome, they found it to be similar to ours in that migrants and immigrants have lent a hand in changing the ingredients, customs, and techniques of the local cuisine. The evolution is ongoing. The book contains classical as well as traditional recipes with modern innovations. One example is Pollo alla Romana, a summer chicken stew. The contemporary twist is serving it in a bun as a sandwich.Divided by familiar themes, the chapters are filled with interesting recipes from Beef Tongue in Salsa Verda to Crackers with Rosemary. I was excited to see the recipe for Upside-Down Pizza made with einkorn flour, my latest favorite ingredient. There is even a chapter on drinks.I was pleased to see an extensive section on ingredients and cooking equipment. It was great to learn about Fennel Pollen and Guanciale without having to search the Internet. In addition, the photography was pleasing with well-staged subjects, and the interspersed history lessons were quite interesting. Who knew there was a Roman Ghetto?There are minor complaints. The authors emphasize the importance of using a scale when baking; however, weight measurements are missing in the biscotti, day of the dead cookies, sponge cake, and sweet buns recipes. In addition, why do I have to hunt the index for biscotti? The biscotti recipe is not under “biscotti” or “cookie”, but under “almond.”I made three recipes:Butter and Anchovy Crostini. This was a unique, tasty, easy starter; however, next time I will place only one anchovy on each toastPollo alla Romana/Chicken with Tomatoes and Bell Peppers. This is a Roman favorite summer stew served alone or on a bun. The dish’s colors reflect those of the city flag. We found it tasty, but not bursting with flavor. It was time consuming.Brutti ma Buoni/Hazelnut Meringues. These are great, best eaten fresh. They are a little time consuming, but the uniqueness and flavor make the effort worthwhile.This book will make a very nice addition to one’s library both for its inspiring recipes and visual appeal. The only thing that would be better than using this book as a guide for Roman eating, drinking, and getting around, would be doing it WITH Katie Parla herself. Each time I open the book, I feel as if I am transported to that magical city called Rome. The recipes are wonderfully written, easy to follow and provide a history of Rome's amazing food scene. You will not regret buying this phenomenal book but be careful because you might just find yourself booking a flight to the Eternal City.

This book is as beautifully crafted as the meals I hope to make from it! The photography is stunning, transporting you to the streets of Rome and so vivid you can almost smell that delicious food. Dont be intimidated by the Italian names or ingredients you may not recognize...the great thing about Roman cooking is how simply the fresh ingredients are put together. This impeccably designed cookbook is a kitchen showpiece...I wasn't expecting such a gorgeous hardcover. Now I just have to make sure I don't get any sauce on it while turning out its yummy recipes!

We love this cook book. After living in Roma for 3 years, we know that most American Italian restaurants just don't have the same flavors as Italy. Once you open this book and start reading the recipes and food explanations, you will understand why. Just a super fabulous book. I feel like I need to do the "Julie and Julia" exercise to cook every single one of these dishes. Yum!
